Aesthetics First BJD Faceup!

Aug 12, 2018

    1. I finally hunkered down and took advantage of the nice weather on my weekend off and gave Minsu, my Little Rebel Sarang head (that I bought last November ^^') A faceup! I've honestly been so nervous about this since I have exactly one other experience with painting dolls and kind of thought it might've been a fluke (I did one fashion doll repaint a few months ago).

He's not done yet. He's currently sitting here drying from the last coat of MSC and then I'm debating if I want to gloss his lips or not. He's also going to get a stud lip piercing that I will eventually drive across town to purchase, but I wasn't feeling it today.

I took this one shortly after I got him... around Christmas 2017.

The next three is what he looks like right now as he's still drying from the last coat of MSC. I was super nervous about everything but I kept shaking when I busted out the acrylics.

Anyway, constructive crit is appreciated and encouraged! Also I will eventually update this thread with further progress/the final product as it goes, albeit it probably won't be a ton of photos since he's pretty much done already.

::Edit:: oh my god... I'm such an idiot. I meant to put this in critique. I was just too excited and forgot it was an option. :doh

::Edit2:: Thanks mods for the move!

    2. He's looking amazing so far!! <3 I'm amazed that this is your first faceup; do you have art experience elsewhere?

    3. @Mysstarry Thank you!~♡ I took about 6 months of animation in college, other than that I've been drawing as a hobby since I was pretty young. That, and the previously mentioned one fashion doll repaint that I've still got sitting half finished on a shelf in my apartment. :sweat

    4. You give me hope that I could perhaps one day attempt to paint my own face-ups and perhaps not have to hang my head in shame! It looks really good!

    5. WOW!! I love the lips:love Hard to believe this is your first!

    6. @CoverGoth Aww! That's so sweet of you! Definitely don't give up! Watch lots of youtube videos if you can. :D

@ana808ana Thank you! I was internally screaming the whole time so I'm so happy it came out as good as it did. :sweat

    7. WoW! That's an impressive first try. Looks amazing.

    8. Looking so good! you should be super proud!! :D

    9. @chrstphrl & @Xannai007 Thank you both <3 There's a few things I'd like to work on in the future but overall I am pretty proud. :3nodding:

    10. Wow I hope my first faceup looks half as good as this! The eyebrows are spot on! I would definately gloss his lips, I find it adds more life to a faceup... other than that I'm looking forward to seeing him with eyes and hair :)

    11. Wow, he looks amazing as for your first face up!

    12. @moomelon Thank you! I ended up glossing his lips with one coat of gloss to give them just a slight shine. And you're in luck because I have more photos to share! :3nodding:

@fairywhale Thank you! I'm pretty happy with how he turned out! :)

Aaaanywho, like I said I have more photos! Like I mentioned, I gave his lips a single coat of gloss and decided to give him short eyelashes, and his lip piercing, of course which is a little nail art Swarovski crystal I picked up from the craft store affixed with regular old white school glue. The wig and eyes will not be his final look, they're just what I have on hand and at least the wig is the right color (his eyes will be dark brown). I *tried* to style the wig as well as I could like how he's going to wear his hair, but honestly it's just a shoddy old fur wig that I made like 5 or so years ago, so we make due with what we've got for now. :sweat

And thank you to everyone for your kind comments! ♡♡♡ It's really reignited my love for the hobby and makes me want to do more faceups. I *do* have another blank head sitting in a box in my closet afterall...

    13. Ooh he looks great, congrats!

    14. He's so gorgeous. Such a beautiful sculpt, every time I see one, I can feel my wallet shaking lol. Very balanced and symmetrical, it's obvious you have experience with drawing. I really love the moles you gave him, I think they add a lot of life.

    15. @watercolorpastels thank you ~♡ LR Sarang is a gorgeous sculpt and when I saw the sculptor mention they knew someone who was selling their tan Sarang I knew I couldn't pass up the opportunity. And thank you for noticing the moles! I think they're my favorite part of the whole faceup tbh.

    16. Wow I love this it's a great faceup looks so jealousy even. I wish I could do that, I look forward to seeing any future work

    17. wow, its so beautiful, hard to believe its yr first faceup

    18. @Waylandor Thank you! I have another blank head sitting in their box in my closet that might end up being a practice head, and I also want to body blush my other dolls. I've been bitten by the painting bug, so I definitely plan on doing more faceups and some body blushing in the future... just need more MSC.

@awapple Thank you! It's technically my second faceup because I've done one vinyl fashion doll repaint before it, but I've been watching youtube videos for doll repaints and faceups for years to gather a theoretical understanding of how to do it. I was super excited and nervous to finally put all my "studies" into practice though!

    19. Wow that looks amazing for your first face up! Well done, I'm very curious about your future work!

    20. Wow, this is really impressive for your first faceup (or second, considering that fashion doll a while ago)! Most first faceups are... not great, but this is pretty dang good! I would say, however, that the eyebrow hairs may be sticking straight up a little too much. They may look a little more realistic with the first few hairs sticking up, and then slightly tapering towards the ends. Maybe add few stray hairs near the end if you want to give it a more messy or bushy look. But overall, fantastic job!

    21. @Aileen.love Thank you. I'm excited to do more... just need to get more MSC in.

@thatnerdsophia Ahh thank you for the critique! I'll definitely keep that in mind for the future. ♡

    22. Omg, indeed a cutie with a cute piercing. I love the progress shots from the beginning, I love the blush added to make the face more dimensional, it’s pretty good for a first try. ^_^

    23. Hard to believe it's your first face up you're work is positively Devine! Not to mention that lip stud you were talking about doing turned out great!

I honestly think you have a a ton of talent and that you should keep doing face ups!

    24. @Dandelion_Wish Thank you! ♡♡♡

@ElfofFlames Oh wow! Thank you so much, that's super kind of you! I definitely intend on doing more. I had so much fun with this one! Gonna buy some more MSC as soon as I get paid so I can start on my spare Zaoll Ramie head, and do some body blushing and tattoos on a couple others. ♡♡♡

    25. Please make sure you post them as I would love to see more of your work!

    26. that is so nice for your first time! i like his eyebrows!

    27. First the sculpt is very unique I love the indents on the eyes. Makes it striking. And you did a great job shading those areas. Really makes it pop

    28. i love how soft this is ^^ and the minimal lashes too, i think it's a lovely touch!

    29. as for first face up is so amazing, i could show what i tryed but not now, i am shame as yours is so good and mines is just....

    30. @Sylvester thank you! I already have a few new ideas I'd like to try for future eyebrows.

@LynnB Thanks! All the Little Rebel dolls have such lovely sculpting so doing a faceup on one is actually quite fun!

@sandpipers Thank you! I was going between if I wanted to do the lashes or not, but I really like them too. It adds a little something extra to the whole thing.

@Anita2006 Please don't be discouraged, that's the last thing I'd ever want my art to do. I watched exhaustive tutorials of doll repaints and have been doing art as a hobby for most of my life. With practice I have confidence you can hone your skills and you'll be proud of your work!
