Faceups First attempt at faceup D:

Jul 4, 2022

Well....... I tried! 2 years after getting my first nude doll (Maddie, on left)!
Lots of smudges, and mistakes. But I waited a long time for this. I understand so much more now. Specially how hard this is to do. What mistakes not to do next time!
And specially I can appreciate other people's work a lot more now...

Maddie's faceup was planned for a long long time since she is an old character. Lumi is a work in progress. so I had no idea what to do haha. I had a lot of problems trying to get the soft pastel to stick to the resin. The rembrandt ones barely showed, the sennelier ones were a little better but I only have a couple of colors.
For Maddie's lips I used gouache since I was going for that painted doll look.
I almost gave up trying to glue on eyelashes (and the gloss was too sticky) but after the first tries it got a little easier.

I will probably try to redo these as soon as the new sealants I bought arrive ^^' I used MTN acrylic this time. To tell you the truth I was so scared I would be too disappointed with myself to stay in the hobby, because of how hard this was and my mistakes. But when I put their heads back on and all, I was just really glad that they have faces! I want to try again soon, using a lot more sealant layers. I don't know, I still have a lot of feelings and I only have alcohol 70% here at the moment, heheh. (I used my parents' backyard to spray, I want to try using my apartment's small balcony next)

A kiss from her, thank you for looking:

Hey, just wanted to give you a super high five for a job well done!

Face-ups are tricky and it takes repetitive practice to learn the language of your materials and develop the muscle memory in using them. To date, I've so far done 6 (or 7? I can't remember XD ) face-ups total. And three of them was redoing the same head!

It gets easier the more you do it. Even if it's redoing the same head over and over.

And what I see here is some beautiful and playful potential. Those painted lips are perfectly symmetrical and the tittle painted heart is heckin' adorable. Eyelashes are the trickiest and will take the most practice power from both your hands and brain. But you already look like you have the basics, so keep at it!

Your girls are pretty and you're doing excellently! And I look forward to seeing your do-over when you're ready :)

      Cheers!

    3. there's definitely a learning curve, but you took that first step!!!!!!! you can only get better from here!
also I want to compliment the blushing you did, like that's pretty cute and quite natural-looking! and it looks like you've got a good idea of where to blush/Common Faceup Practices too.

Doing multiple layers definitely helps build up that colour, especially if you're using pastels instead of an airbrush. so i hope that when the new sealant arrives you'll be able to layer as much as you want!

congrats again on taking that first plunge!!!

      @captain.
Thank you both so much for the support and encouragement! I'll definitely try again when I can and maybe try to plan Lumi's faceup a bit more on paper/digital before redoing her faceup!
I'm really glad for your comments, so believe me when I say they really meant a lot to me :3nodding: It's really great to have such an awesome community here <3

    5. I love the little heart on her cheek, and I think what you've done with her lips and her brows is cute, too. Eyelashes are a real difficult one but you'll improve with work, and for a first time faceup, I think it's great.

My first faceup I was so timid and scared to make a mistake that you could barely tell I'd done a thing with it... and Vince's second faceup went too hard in the other direction and made me cringe to look at, but I've only really done a handful of them and can see a lot of improvement in my work now when I look at my current batch, it's all about moving past the first steps and finding yourself as an artist. You already have stuff to be proud of and the parts you had trouble with still teach you for next time.
