50–65cm Dolls First Attempt || 1/3rd Head - "Bijou"

Jun 11, 2015

    1. Hello all! I really wanted to try my hand at sculpting because I do have some very basic knowledge/skeel and also because I honestly hope to be able to be good enough to make heads for myself with all them features I find hard to come by in sculpts.

So for my first attempt, I'm vaaaaguely trying to sculpt a head that shares some features with one of my favourite athletes, Brian Joubert.

This is what I was going for (messily, ofc). As you will begin to see, I mess up terribly soon enough. I had to import some LaDoll since I cannot find any of the suggested materials here locally. But it seems I really have much to learn because I was under the impression I was buying the grey coloured LaDoll, which wasn't the case.

From the get-go, I sort of already mess up the size. I already find my MoDoll Martin Freeman head quite large so I had to start trimming it down some how.

Eventually, he started taking shape, and I can at least say I liked his nose. I was progressively loosing the resemblance, so at this point, I just resigned to the fact that accuracy was something I still needed a lot of work on and that this attempt wasn't really going to do, but I'd still continue working on it.

Which brings us to what I have so far:

I'm not 100% happy with it, but I don't hate it which is great! I've been working on the eyes which I can't seem to get to look nice just yet, but this is also sort of a delaying tactic because I'm afraid to do the ears.

If you wonderful peeps have any tips or concrit, please, let me have it, no matter how harsh. I'm still feeling my way around this. /o/

    2. I think he looks great so far, and I adore the nose shape you've made! You're very well on your way, and this is amazing for your first try!

    3. It's not so bad for a first try, I know I did much worse. His upper lip and eyes needs more definition, you should also add eyelids.

    4. that's a great first attempt! mine went worse I promise. What I've seen from the profile view is that the forehead area needs a stronger structure. Look at the comparison with the other head and see how it stretches flat straight up instead of moving into a curve. It's hard to get eyes to look nice without a correct base structure to work with! Work with general shapes first and move onto the details (like eyeshape and eyelids) later on

    5. Thank you all!

I'm working on fixing the eyes right now. What I had on the right side socket just broke after I tried fitting a glass eye in to see what it'd look like. (Does that mean I did something wrong with the clay or just that it was too thin? Hahaha)

I'm trying to fix the lips as well. Dang it's like, such a tiny thing to work on, I'm looking at this area wondering how people do it with such finesse. xD

Theforehead, I think I will be able to do better when I've found a way to affix the headback on so I can see the entirety of it's shape when I work on it.

I'll update with new pics soon. Thanks again for all the comments. :D

    6. Idk about other people but for sculpting the lips and nose of my projects (which reminds me I gotta post about the second one) I've used an actual sewing needle for almost all of it uwu;;

    7. Thought I'd drop a little update here.

O've added more forehead and tried to follow everyone's advice on the eyes and lips... IDK, I THINK it's working a bit, but I also think I'm drifting further away from my reference. Oh well. LOL Still a lot of sanding to do.

      ETA:

Did some sanding. Tried to fix that jank ass lip some more.

    8. The nose looks really good! In profile he looks quite advanced already. Have you tried eyes on him yet? Are you going for a realistic or a stylized look?

    9. Thank you! >3<

I tried eyes on him before I added the ears and cleaned up the sanding:

I honestly can't tell how realistic I'm going, so I'm a little lacking in direction, but in my head, as long as lit looks good, I'll be happy. LOL

    10. he looks very good with the new eyelids you gave him!

    11. I keep making little edits and the doing a lot of sanding and then making more little edits thus rendering my previous sanding moot. LOL

But I decided to try some eyes on him. I don't wanna push too hard to get the putty right because last time I did, the eyelids broke, but I think he looks pretty ok right now. :D

I think the biggest thing I have to fix right now is the ears, but if any of you see anything else that you think really needs improving, I'd love to hear what you think. :3

    12. Maybe it's the angle, but it feels like left jaw is deeper than right jaw or the angle is diffrent. Also good luck on the ears. He's really come far <3

    13. You're totally right, they aren't even. /squints I'll have to keep a better eye out for symmetry.

And thank you so much for all your feedback! >3< I really appreciate it! <3

    14. I've started priming and oh gosh, I haven't felt more proud of him than I do now.

Far from perfect, but I can't believe I'm almost done with him. A few more fixes to go.

      ETA:

Here he is with 14mm eyes with small irises and a 9″ wig. He can fit my 8-9″wigs but some of them feel a little streched out and look thinner on him than on other heads. He also looks bobble headed on my 68cm Mirodoll body, but then again, so does the head who normally uses that body. (Albeit to a lesser degree.) xD

I also ought make the crook of his neck deeper.
