Aesthetics First And Second BJD Faceups

May 29, 2015

    1. Hey guys! I recently finished my second BJD faceup (before these two I've only ever painted Pullip and MH dolls in the past) and I'm overly proud of my work, but I wondered if there were any specific improvements I could make in the future.

This is the first, with this one I went too light with her eyelashes, and wasn't particularly neat with her eyeliner and some of the powder (though that has been mostly edited out)

And the recently completed second faceup ^^

If you have any advice to help me improve or spot any mistakes that I've missed, I would love to hear about them!
      Thanks :)

((also, apologies if the images are way too large))

    2. I really can't...find anything wrong with either of these except maybe the eyebrows are a little thin but even that's just a matter of taste. If I paid for you to do a face up & ended up with either of these I'd be extremely thrilled so I don't think you have too much to worry about.

    3. Ahh, thank you so much! You're definitely right though, looking at her on my shelf I realize that the second girl's eyebrow are about as thick as the brows I do for my Monster High dolls, it's lucky that they work ok for her character :XD:

    4. oh,so cute^^

    5. Wow, beautiful work! I especially love the way the freckles and lips turned out on the second faceup - I attempted freckles once and it did not go well, to say the least XD I really can't find anything to critique about these, your linework is fantastic and the symmetry of the makeup and brows is wonderful.

    6. Thank you so much guys, I really appreciate it :love

    7. Wow for first and second tries these are amazing! I really like them! I even like the thin eyebrows! ^.^ And I hope you don't mind if I ask but did you use acrylic paints or watercolor pencils?

    8. Wow, these do not look like beginner faceups! Superb job!!!! :love

    9. Lovely. I love how your eyebrows are long enough. Most faceups tend to have eyebrows that are too short (in my opinion). :daisy

    10. Ahh thank you! I actually use pretty much everything I can use
eyeliner is a combo of acrylic paint in the tight-line and watercolour pencil for the wing, lips are pastel and watercolour pencils, freckles are watercolour paint, and everything else is watercolour pencils and pastels ^^

    11. The only thing I can say is that they look like fashion doll makeup, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. :)

    12. I think they both look lovely. You did an amazing job on the freckles, they look very natural!

    13. Wow! Both of these are really pretty! I especially love the black lips on your first one (looks so cool with the purple eyes too). It must have been tricky to paint the teeth so nicely, they look great! This is just a personal preference but I'd love to see some more gloss on the black eyeliner of both faceups.

    14. These are really beautiful! Congratulations!
The only thing that stuck out to me is was the lower eyelashes on the freckled doll head. They just look very even and drawn in. Maybe they could look a little softer and more random? At first glance it just looks like someone drew a zigzag under her eye.

I do not say this to be mean! Just that it stuck out to me.

I've never done any faceups, so honestly I'm probably not in the best position to give feedback. But there it is.

Still, they are very well done!

    15. Hi! These faceups are really amazing! You did amazing on the eyes, and I'm in love with the freckles!
The only thing I would say, and this might just be a matter of taste, but the bottom lashes look a little to light, compared to the very black "eyeliner" on the top lashes. The bottom lashes on the freckled face, as someone else said, look a little drawn on, and not as natural as the first faceup.

Overall though, these faceups are stunning!

    16. These two faceups are both amazing and beautiful in their own ways. The only thing I have to say is about the bottom eyelashes. You did a beautiful job, but I feel with the more realistic face, maybe they should have more realistic bottom lashes instead of a type of pattern? If you like them like that, go for it because it really is beautiful, but it is something you can try out. I wish I could do faceups like this!

    17. you did great these are both waaaay better than my second face up attempt! Umm yeah you have tons of talent!

    18. If I didn't know any better I'd say you've done this a hundred times! The freckles on your second girl look very realistic :aheartbea

    19. if i were to improve anything, i'd work on the eyebrows, so as to make the little, separate hars visible. Other than this - they're pure perfection <3 I also love th freckles (about which I'm crazy xD) but what drew my attention are also the black lips - you made them look so natural, like actualy human lips touched by lipstick - great job :)

    20. You are my faceup inspiration. I love the first one.

    21. i love the freckles and lips in the 2nd faceup. i definitely think i agree with the user who said that any thing wrong is mostly a matter of taste. like I prefer more natural and subdued colors so the 2nd faceup really works for me over the black lips in the first. But I love the eyeliner in that first one!

    22. Honestly if this is how you do for the first time.. you have no worries what so ever. Believe me you wouldn't want to see my first attempt at a face up. I had to whipe it as soon as it was finished. I couldn't look at it... That's how bad it was. :mwahaha

So I'm sure you'll only get better and you're already veeeery good! :3nodding::D

    23. I just wanted to say that dark lipstick on dolls tends to be hard to work out correctly, but you pulled it off perfectly in those first photos!!! I'm so so so in love with your faceups, I hope you keep doing them in the future!!!

    24. I'd say that the eyebrows on both don't have enough of depth in them. I'm no expert so I can't really say how to improve it - all I can see is that something is wrong with the dimensions :sweat

The eye make-up on both, however, is very beautiful, and my gosh you did amazing job with the freckles :thumbup

    25. These are amazing for first and second faceups! You will be amazing if you practice lots!

    26. Not a thing wrong! These look almost professional!

    27. I really love how clean your lines are!

    28. First off, I want to say that I think these are really wonderful and you did a great job.

That said, the gloss on the top lid of the freckled face seems like it's a little too much. The freckles and light eyebrows you added to the face give it a very soft look, and I wonder how it would look if you only applied gloss to the waterline and skipped the top lid.

    29. Well...you're great! those are gorgeous!
If you look for advice I can only suggest thicker eyebrows if you like them and a bit more contouring on the face :)
      The freckles: awesome!

    30. These are really good. If you can define the hair better on the eyebrow and eyelash then it would be perfect but honestly i think they are pretty good now.

    31. just wanted to say that both these face ups turned out amazing! Also wanted to congratulate you on the black lipstick on the first one. Although i have not done so with a face up before i know from painting that getting black to create a smooth gradient can be very difficult and doing so on such a small scale with such precision is ineradicable

    32. I really like these face ups, especially the freckles and lips of the second one. I agree with some of the others, in that, for me, the brows are a little thin, but that may be a matter of taste. I, too, would wish for some individual hairs drawn on. These are really nice.

    33. I've got no advice to give, but I love the freckles. Did you use a toothbrush to spray them on?

    34. I think both of you face ups turned out great for just staring out.I love the lips. Keep up the good work!

    35. gorgeous! love the lips!

    36. Stunning technical skills you've got there :D

Maybe add some visible hairs/brush strokes into the eyebrows? Matter of stylistic preference on that I think though, it's certainly not a fault of your technique.

    37. First and second?! Those are amazing ! I love those freckles.

Can you imagine what your 10th, 100th, 500th would look like if this was only your first and second? Haha. Keep up the wonderful work ! I hope my first few faceups turn out as beautiful as yours !

    38. These are really beautiful!

    39. I love them both. I am a little more partial to the freckles, but I think that's a matter of taste, as said above. I just LOVE this one though. It's so sweet. I would maybe make the eyebrows thicker, but that's just my preference. I think overall the faceup is gorgeous. I am in love with it :D

    40. I don't really have any critique lol. I'm new to faceups myself so I was just browsing, BUT I wanted to stop and just say how much I LOVE these. You're a natural!!!

    41. Wow you do amazing faceups!!
