Aesthetics First (actually second) faceup ever

Feb 24, 2016

    1. Hello, even though I've been in this hobby for many years I only recently got around to doing my first faceup... but it being on an abs hujoo I couldn't ask for critique here. But it did wake my creativity up a fair bit, and now I'm in a wild faceupping spree... so for second faceup I redid my Alice's faceup (Bobobie Mei). I actually just kind of painted over the original company faceup, but it was so worn and faded only the eyebrows and some of the lashes were (barely) left. I think I did a pretty good job, although in my opinion the lashes are a bit messy and the lips could use more detail. Opinions?

An old "before" image for comparison

    2. I think it looks nice. I like the look you were going for!:)

I think I would maybe re-enforce the "eyeliner" to create a smoother look and/or have it closer to the eyelashes, maybe that would help.

The lips I think are really pretty. I can't really tell by the picture how detail they are, but if you want to put more detail in them how about those slightly darker thin vertical lines?

    3. Pretty good! The individual hairs of the eyelashes and eyebrows could be neater and better defined but overall it is a good faceup :)

    4. Thank you! Yes, I had some problems with the eyeliner since for some reason I couldn't get a black pencil to perfectly adhere to the resin and watercolors would just drip off... but today I did another faceup and I discovered it was just because the pencil wasn't soft enough and the msc still hadn't completely dried, oh well :3nodding: Anyway, actually the line being so distant from the lashes was intentional because I was trying to follow my drawings of the character as a guideline (a drawing for comparison) [IMG]
And as for the lips, yes, I really wanted to do that but unfortunately I had no pencils of the right color orz
Thanks! Yeah, I know, but for some reason I can't seem to be able to fully sharpen my pencils so their tips are always a bit thick abd blunt, I think I'll ask someone else to do it for me :sweat

    5. I love your drawing :D Most everything I would have pointed out has been said but I had some tips and recommendations and things that may or may not be useful.

Firstly, pencils: don't suffer with blunt ones! I have a drawer full of crappy sharpeners and it's been so much trial and error, but this is absolutely the best pencil sharpener ever for what it costs and I highly recommend it if you want to use watercolor pencils for faceups: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003G560JQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01

It sharpens in two stages and creates a super long, extremely sharp point, I love the thing. (The pencil it shows in the picture is not an accurate representation, it is way longer and sharper than that.) Comes with spare blades, too!

MSC: I've seen recommendations to wait 15 minutes between MSC coats, I try to wait 30 just to be safe, I don't know if that's overkill or not. It sucks when you're feeling impatient and want to art all over something, but the result is better in the end.

It's also totally possible to use watercolors to do eyebrows without having it run off, it works best if you're either using tube watercolors or just a small amount of water and dipping the paint straight off the cake, my technique's not perfected yet and watercolor is so much more forgiving than acrylic. And of course if you're using pencils and it looks grainy, you can mitigate some of the graininess by smoothing it with water and a thin brush. I kinda like to move paint around and work over mistakes to see if I can turn it into something interesting though, I know others might prefer a more streamlined process. :sweat

      Keep it up!

    6. Did you use silver for the bottom eyelashes? It looks really interesting/shiny.

    7. I like it :) the eyelids are a little messy though, have you tried using a brown shade for it? She does have some brown, or dark red over her eyes in your drawing.

I'd also tell you to maybe link the undereye line to the corner, or blush it with brown or another medium shade so the difference is less evident, seen from the front it looks drawn on and quite unnatural.

    8. Thank you! (sorry for the super late reply, life and school and stuff and... yeah) Thank you for the advice, unfortunately getting anything from out of the eu would be a bit expensive, but I'll look into finding that kind of pencil sharpener! Yes, I figured I should wait more inbetween layers, since i'm very impatient, lol. Thank you for all the helpful advice!

No, I did them in black then made highlights with a white pencil :)

Ah, yeah! I did use a bit of brown, but maybe I should've used it more. Thanl you for the advice!

    9. I was going to suggest sort of tightlining the eyes ... making the bits between the eyelashes a bit darker, I only know the term when doing it in human makeup, but after seeing the reference image, I just think it is wonderful. I think you definitely achieved the look. I love the image with the wig. Everything looks great

    10. You did a great job, I like your face up, also your picture!

    11. It looks so much like your drawing! Are you wetting the pencil? Perhaps it will be cleaner if you do it dry. It may not be dark right away, but you can do it in layers to make it darker. You may be able to get finer lines this way?
