First 1/3 head

Dec 22, 2016

    1. Hi all,

I wanted to show my first attempt at a 1/3 size head. She's made of LaDoll clay and I've been slowly working on her since last February. I don't own any BJD myself (although I'd love to) and have never really tried to sculpt one before, so this is all new to me.

Here are some older photos where you can see her features evolve.

A few months ago, I got myself a rotary tool and some bits, which have helped me a lot with detail work I was unable to do before. Unfortunately, I seem to be having a bit alignment issue, so the tool has not been as precise as I would like. I'm also beginning to get frustrated with how soft LaDoll is—any time I try to refine the eye openings, for example, everything just seems to crumble and it's hard to control. I realized I needed a different material that will hold its shape better, so I have ordered some Apoxie Sculpt to add on top of the LaDoll. It will be my first time using that material, so we'll see how it goes.

Here's where I am at the moment. I will try to continue to post updates. Things should change quite a bit when I get the Apoxie.

Thanks for checking out my progress. I'm open to feedback :)

    2. I'm working on my first bjd using Paperclay. When I'm done I will post my results. I use a combination of schools basic glue with the paperclay to strengthen it along with a little water. Why dont you try mixing the air dry clay with other basic non toxic glues and go from there.

    3. She's looking great so far ^__^ Keep it up!

Are you using the rotary tool in her eye openings? It might be that the tool is just too strong for the thin clay... In the thinner areas you might be better off gently scraping with an X-Acto, or getting some handheld mini files, or even just a tiny bit of sandpaper attached to a toothpick :) But Apoxie Sculpt should work too, I would just make sure to attach it securely or the La Doll might just break where the Apoxie starts.

Good luck with your sculpting! I hope you find something that works! Looking forward to seeing your progress ^^
