Finished New Photos, Full Body and New Outfit 12/7/08 "Tatine" my first BJD

Feb 10, 2008

    1. Thanks to all of you for the inspiration (especially Enaibi, lilicat, and twigling)....I finally started sculpting my own doll. It's been a long process, and I still have a long way to go, but I'm really enjoying it. It's fun to see a doll emerging. I sculpted her head with Fimo polymer clay and am sculpting her body with Premier air dry clay. I really like the premier..this is my first time using it and it's pretty easy to work with, tho' requires lots of sanding!!

I'll be posting my progress as I finish other body parts. Thanks for taking a peek!

Here's a look at all the body parts

    3. Wow, I'm honoured to have inspired something like this, she's gorgeous, looks like a more mature version of something that Kaye might have sculpted. Is the first pic from the same point of progress as the other three?

    4. Hi Twigling..thanks for the compliment!! The first pic is from before the last 3 pics..when I was first starting the body. I hope to finish the detail work in lower torso in the next day or two. I think I'm hooked on this doll making thing!! Oh..and thanks for sharing your knowledge with everyone.

I love her and I'm subscribing to watch!

    37. She's very pretty! Is she SD size or ?

    38. Shes lovely! She has the sort of body ive always wanted for my dolls, it looks perfect ^_^ Im assuming youre only making one? or what? And what size is she? And when will i get to see her finished because shes lovely!

    39. Thanks for the nice words!
Tatine (I've finally named her) will be Unoa/Narae size with more of an adult faerie body...slimmer, longer legs, etc. If I'm happy with how she turns out I will try my hand at making molds and casting. If that part is successful, I will make a limited edition of her.

    40. wow she's such a looker!
      What a serene, shy beauty!

    41. Sheesh! I've been working and working on my girl but it doesn't seem like I'm making much progress! lol! This is my first time working with an airdry clay and all I seem to be doing is adding and sanding. I'm hoping it will all start coming together shortly and I hope to add new pics of her this weekend. My fitst attempt at hands was a bust, but now I know what I did wrong.

    42. hey Dianna,

yeah - I've been using paperclay for the last few years because of allergies, and had gotten used to the longer timeframe you need for it ..... its amazing how much faster the polymer goes. Are you drying your paperclay in the oven ? I found that helped alot, especially with the premier which seems to stay damp inside forever.

but isn't she so beautiful all white and pristine in the airdry clay?

looking forward to more pics --- what did you do to make the hands go better? (sometimes i hate hands almost as much as i hate ears....)

    43. Hi Pat,

No..I'm not drying the clay. It's actually kinda good that it takes awhile to dry..that way it forces me to move on to another piece. I've been called a "perpetual smoother" so with polymer I can smooth a piece to death (lol!)..but the airdry clay forces me to move on...it just requires a TON of sanding. Especially since I'm not an accomplished sculptor and don't know what I'm doing half the time!
As for the hands..I made the first pair too wide and the thumbs were positioned too far down...so I'm redoing the hands for better proportioning.

Hey....Do you think Forest will give this bjd thing a try? I'm a huge fan of her work and would love to see what kind of bjd she'd create!

    44. Dianna,

are you wiping the surface with wet cloth, or fingers or wet paintbrush before you leave it to dry? that can smooth it a lot for you..... also gently rolling the rounded surfaces on smooth glass will take out a lot of fingerprints...

"accomplished" is nice - but you have a wonderful eye for form and ability to translate it to clay. thats more important. accomplished you can become.

I'm really hoping Forest will start too --- I know she is interested and believe that is why she joined this forum. - i would SO love to have one of her harpies as a bjd.....

    45. I've finally finished a couple more parts for Tatine. Right now she's a Frankendolly! tee hee My friend Julie let me borrow a couple minis from her for models..so Tatine has Limhwa hands, Castle Anne lower legs and Unoa feet. Guess she is truly a hybrid! I finally made a head cap that fits okay..now if I can just finish the other body parts.

Now that she is strung I can see some things that I need to work on..so she'll be a work in progress for awhile longer.
