Aesthetics Feeling foxy: painting up a Luts Zuzu Delf Fenny

Jan 19, 2023

    1. As my first step into the world of BJDs, I opted to start with an anthro, and settled on Luts' Zuzu Delf Fenny model. Based on her name, I wanted to make her a fennec fox. Possibly with some flavoring from WoW's vulpera, because even if I'm not actively playing right now, I do love the little guys.

Step 1, after sealing with two coats of Munitorium and letting her sit overnight, was trying some basic watercolor marking out to lay out her lids and little muzzle markings. I wasn't sure how well these would show after airbrushing. I also ended up removing the line on her lower lip, as I felt like it made her cuter and less like she had Dull Surprise face.

Next up, the following day: a little more pencil work and the big thing, which was airbrushing. It turned out to be 95% trying to troubleshoot the brush as it stopped spraying paint to 5% actual painting, but once I got the feel again (it's been awhile since I used an airbrush) I was pleased with how it applied color onto the zuzu white resin base.

I can't help but feel like currently, with the brown on the yellow, that she looks kind of like Pikachu.

    3. Thank you! I'm pleased with how she's turning out.

Today was properly working with watercolor pencils, and a little extra paint, day. After looking at some more photos of fennecs, I knew I definitely wanted to adjust her muzzle marks, and the areas around her eyes needed further lightening and definition. She's turning out very Disney and I'm okay with that.

Also tried adding a little bit of fur definition to her, which is probably most noticeable on her back and tail.

I feel like she's coming across as a lady with personality now. Still needs a name, though.

    4. Today's work: not as much big obvious stuff. I spent part of the day doing paint repair, as she got more scuffed than I expected trying to do a clothes test fit (and finding out her arm elastic is VERY finicky to yank out) and then doing more minor things-touch ups, claws, paw pads, and fur detailing. I think she'll be ready for sealant tomorrow.

    5. I actually finished her a few days ago...and forgot to post my final pics. The Disney dress up packs + a doll that wears them well are very distracting. She's all sealed up now, with some touch ups done and a third coat applied to her body after some chipping:

Will her joints continue to chip/rub? Probably, because I cheat sealed/airbrushed and didn't want to brave de- and re-assembly. I figure they'd wear even if I had, anyway.

I really love the extra level of expressiveness that her ears give her. She's my first BJD and I'm finding the way she poses and how much personality she has delightful.

Buy more Disney packs...give in to the Mouse....
