I have seen some old threads on this, but full of dead links and not really informative. Has anyone made feather wigs for their dolls and does anyone have any good tutorials or photos on the subject? There was a BJD group I was in where someone posted a lovely faun sculpt that had a blue wig made of craft feathers and I am very interested in seeing more wigs in this style!
I made two feather wigs several years ago. I'll go look for my photos from the project. What I remember is that I made a felt wig cap for the first, & something thinner...maybe cling wrap(?) for the second then glued all the feathers in place which made a close fitting hard cap wig that was tricky to get on & off. It was for the old CPDelf Juris which have a big round head & that head shape may have been part of the problem. But it's a cool concept & I'd love to see what you do.
Here is a photo of the wig I made for the Delfs. And links to more photos (Let me know if these work) https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/f56/LionHeartHats/Juri_2_(4).JPG https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/f56/LionHeartHats/Juri_(15).JPG https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/f56/LionHeartHats/Juri_(14).JPG https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/f56/LionHeartHats/Juri_(13).JPG I thought there were construction photos but I'll have to keep digging for them. The issue I had was probably that I made the fitted wig cap fit over too much of the head which meant it had to be slid on with precision and finesse. ;} It stayed on well once it was on. But less wig cap might have worked better as long as you figured out how to keep it on the head. I think I tried thin leather for one head cap, but it needed to be an even thinner base material to reduce bulk.
This is the other wig from that project. https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/f56/LionHeartHats/Feathered_wig.JPG https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/f56/LionHeartHats/Feathered_wig_(2).JPG I like sewing more than I enjoy getting wigs to fit well or gluing feathers so I never explored the possibilities further although I love the look & can imagine some really cool styles. I don't remember whether I was using E6000 or white glue for attaching the feathers. Hopefully you can find more info to help. ;}
These are so awesome! The construction information does help me. It gives me a starting point to go from. I was wondering if the wig cap should be more or less sturdy. Since I didn't want it to be too loose and cause the feathers to crack away from the adhesive or too stiff and risk damaging the feathers int he process of trying to take the wig on and off. I do have access to some thin and flexible faux suede that I use for sueding my doll's joints. Perhaps this could be a good starting base for a prototype wig? I could always harden it with glue products if I needed it to be sturdier. It is a starting point, at least. Thank you for the information and for the photos!
I wish I could remember more of what did & didn't work...hmm...the one wig is in the wig box. I'll look at it & see if that jogs any useful information in my brain.
here's a process album for a 1/6th feather wig i made. it's a "hard cap" in that it holds it's shape when you take it off the head. feather wig making I also ended up making a dress for her out of the same feathers for a sort of odette from swan lake feel here's the wig paired with more casual clothes
Yep. A layer of cling wrap over the head protected the faceup as well as keeping any seeping glue from getting to the headcap. @bahboh , did you cover the cling wrap with masking tape for the head cap? That sounds like a good lightweight flexible base to glue the feathers to. How has the tape layer aged? Hope it is holding together well for you.
Lol I used masking tape cut into strips to arrange into a hemisphere shape, but had the adhesive facing outwards, so I could use less glue to stick the feathers on. So there's no plastic wrap in the wig itself. It was only used when making the wig to protect the head. It's been about a year and a half and I don't notice any changes in materials from when I made it
I see. On mine the cling wrap became a part of the headcap as I used glue on each feather to be sure of a permanent finish but heck if I remember which glue I was using...
I still used glue (Aileen's tacky glue) just not so much where everything felt wet. Def not a waterproof wig though
I have done one for my Popovy. It's a hard cap. Had a lot of fun making it. I based it off of an a line style. Wish I could post picts on here but I can't right now. It's on my Instagram though.
