I've been told to use a stretchy fabric for wig caps that I intend to make into wigs, but I'm just curious what everyone prefers using? I've heard jersey fabric and tights?
Any knit fabric that’s thin enough will do. The premade caps I see on AliExpress look like they’re made from tights anyways
I find that if you don’t keep them in a head the knit type cap can shrink, so I use 90grade cheesecloth, two layers. I might just be doing the stretch type wrong though.
I use tights for all of mine, the opaque kind. I haven't had any issues with shrinkage, but then I do keep mine on dolls typically.
I used to exclusively use tights but an irl friend in the hobby told me of a weird thing recently that I tried and have been using it since. Baby wipes that have been cleaned and dried completely. They're a very nice cotton fabric and mold well to doll heads! Just need to use thin elastic, string, or rubber bands to keep it on initially. Plus super cheap and you don't have to worry about them drying out because you can clean anything out of them even if they dry out. They don't shrink like tights. And they can also be dried in a clothes drier.
I use dried makeup wipes and silicone. Basically, I wrap the head in saran wrap, a thin layer of silicone, put the dried makeup wipe on it (wonder if it would work with paper towels as well?), second layer of silicone, wait for it to dry, remove it, turn it so that the second layer of silicone you applied becomes the inside layer of the wig and apply the wefts. The fabric thing didn't work out for me. I kind of struggle to glue on the wefts though, while I am finally satisfied with the wig cap, my gluing work is so messy. XD
i had some luck with a used drier sheet. layered it up twice to reinforce it a bit. (needed a white base for the cap where holes for horns wouldnt stretchwhile i was working on it)
I've used tights, but I've also followed an old Poppen Atelier method where you layer plastic wrap, clear tape, and hot glue. It ultimately creates a wig cap that sticks pretty well to the doll's head, and it's super fast to make, too.
I've been using very un-stretchy linen and cotton leftover bits from sewing Although, since I sew the wefts on, the normally sewn wig caps shrunk very quickly while working the hair on. I learned my lesson and now I just put some plastic over the doll's head, pull the fabric down with elastic and apply a layer of school glue on top for it to mould to the shape of the head while drying - the stitches from attaching the wefts don't seem to make it go down a size with this method so the dolls I've made the wigs for can also actually wear them. I guess this would have not been a problem with stretchy fabric but for anyone using something more solid it is perhaps good to learn from my mistake.
I just buy caps from AE. I’m too lazy. Works fine. And I have no extra head to work with for wigs. So win win.
