Favorite type of BJD videos?

Aug 11, 2015

    1. So, as someone still delving back into the BJD hobby, it amazes me on how many other platforms people are now sharing their dolls (honestly I feel like such an old lady haha). In particular, I'm loving watching all of the videos on youtube of owners sharing their dolls, telling about their backstories or doing reviews or talking about their thoughts on hot button issues in the hobby. It seems I'm always looking for more to watch (and trying not to feel too tempted to make some myself), so I thought I'd post a discussion here about what types of videos other people might like to watch. Maybe there's something I'm missing or I should be searching for? Or if YOU make videos I'd love to hear your experience making them!

    2. I do love watching box opening videos of any kind: it may be a doll, clothing haul, wigs haul etc. Like yourself, I also love hearing other people's stories and seeing their beautiful dolls. Hearing their experiences and accounts on any particlar matter or events is really a cherry on top. Not to mention, TUTORIALS! Not only are they very helpful, but also very fun to watch. Really, I wanted to start making videos of my own but life has been busy lately. Maybe soon.

    3. Tutorials and reviews are nice. I am in general, not a fan of video openings. I have never looked for or come across the ones telling about back stories or discussing "hot button" issues as you put it. I tend to keep to myself so other than the "r" word, I am not aware of any issues that may be out there. I hear there is dolly drama, but never have come across it thankfully. :)

    4. I really enjoy box opening videos. I just love getting to see/hear the excitement as someone sees their new doll for the first time. I also like getting to look at the dolls in detail, and in box openings they usually do that as they'll show the body close up, maybe dress it a little, see how it poses and so on. I find them really enjoyable, as long as they're not too long. I especially like to look for ones of dolls I am going to get, or would like to get, as it's nice to see what they look like.

Plus, I quite like videos where the person answers questions people have sent in, or where they give some tips and advice based on a specific topic. And I always enjoy silly ones, like a recent BJD pick-up lines one I saw that was rather funny.

This is an interesting conversation topic, I'm curious to see what other people say :).

    5. My favorite BJD videos are the stop motion ones where the dolls themselves are the stars! I can only imagine how much time & effort goes into those things. They're very cool. I also like reviews if they are well done and aren't too long.

    6. I like update videos that show craft/mod projects, talk about character development or just people rambling about general doll plans. I listen to these videos (more than watch) while I'm drawing or doing chores around the house. Box openings are especially fun, I definitely watch those, cause it's cool to see how companies package their dolls, what the company face ups look like, how did it fare through customs, etc.

    7. I love to see unboxings and faceup tutorials. You can learn a lot just by watching and practicing the techniques in your head.

    8. I love watching BJD videos on YouTube too!
Box/package openings, diorama tours, and collection (clothes, props, dolls) videos are my favorite to watch but I like watching all sorts of BJD videos.
The only BJD video I have up on my channel is Nadeko's box opening but I want to start making BJD videos like the BJD Addicts prompts eventually.

    9. I love faceup videos.

    10. i like unboxing videos, faceup videos and updates (that aren't to talky). My fave videos though are the ones showing off peoples whole collection
      :)

    11. I love box openings! Its almost as exciting as getting the doll yourself! As long as they're not too long!

    12. Tutorials! I love tutorials that show faceups, or how to make wigs, or shoes , or just anything for BJDs really! It is so much fun to learn to make things for your dolls!

    13. I really love to hear about backstories. When you hear people tell their dolls' stories, you really hear how much they thought through their characters. It is so inspiring to see people who create whole worlds for their dolls, the stories really make the dolls come alive. You suddenly understand why a doll dresses in a certain way, or what that scar came from, or why the doll seems to look so sad. When you hear a lot about a certain doll you start to care for them and they transcend out of their plastic shells to become something more. I really love how magical the process of storytelling is and what it does to a certain doll. I think it's super inspiring and am now working on stories of my own.

    14. As I'm like you, i love watching almost anything bjd related, and am always searching for new stuff to watch, i have a few youtube channels to recommend :). First Pink peppermint, she has an amazing AS haul, and lots of vids about her dolls. sdrcow is a hilarious guy who posts lots of different videos, like he has a tutorial on how to string jointed hands and box openings and stuff. Asenvabjd posts really interesting videos talking specifically about the hobby, some blog chats and do's and dont's that sort of thing. Also, you have to check out Nicolles Dreams, she is one of the best face artists I've seen. I've been following her for ages, and her work is just stunning. She also does box openings and basics video's too :D.

    15. I'm like almost everyone hahaha. I love unboxing videos, especially if they're about dolls I ordered even though they make me even more impatient LOL. I like faceup videos too. I have no experience with painting dolls so those types of videos give me motivation to try it out. (MSC still scares the living nightmare out of me though)

    16. I like watching clothing haul videos. Seeing all those amazing things bought from sellers, Taobao, etc. give me ideas of what I might buy for my first doll. Especially if they try the outfit on the doll in the video. Also, box opening videos and face-up tutorials. Though the thought of doing a faceup makes me nervous. I'm not an artsy person at all.

    17. Actually I'm not a fan of unboxing videos. I like body reviews and see how poseable a doll is, how the body works, hear opinions what other people think about a body..etc.
The design and face i prefer to watch pictures from them ^^
I watch definatly more pics then videos. Really really rare moments, that I watch some and these are mostly reviews..

    18. I like watching faceup videos/tutorials...gazing longingly while I'm thinking, "Wahhh, I'll never be able to do that!" There are a few box openings that are entertaining but most of the time they tend to be too long to keep my interest. BJD Collection videos are probably my favorite, especially when the owners talk about the personalities of their dolls and discuss how their backstories intertwine with each other's. Oh! And when I was just a fledgling in the hobby, for some reason I was initially intimidated at the thought of restringing dolls, but watching tutorials online calmed those fears. Now it's not a big deal, haha.

Though my favorite BJD vid has to be the one where this cat was seeing a BJD for the first time and it was like, "....poke...poke...poke....are you alive?" O____O I still get a kick out of it. XD

    19. I've quite recently (as in a month or two ago) started really getting into doll videos. I love the clothing haul videos too!:D I got into this hobby because I wanted to dress up dollies and I just adore looking at cute doll clothes. I love seeing what pretty things people have bought (or made) for their dolls.

But I just like basically any type of doll-related videos. It's so fun watching people introducing their collections and talking about their plans. Even more than whole doll box openings, I really like seeing box openings after getting new faceups. It's great seeing their faces light up as the doll they've been waiting for comes back.

    20. I love watching box opening videos! I watched a bunch before deciding to buy a doll. I really like seeing the happiness people get when they open their doll ^^

    21. Videos of doing face-ups are nice, and stop-motion animation is always impressive! I've tried to watch box opening videos but they just don't hold my interest.

    22. I like watching box opening videos, because they allow me to kind of see the doll in person and I can get a concept of the dolls scale, and even how the doll moves. I love review videos, because I can see how the doll moves and I can really understand its possibility and limitations. I enjoy watching other doll owners discuss their dolls characters and back stories, because it's really fun to see how someone else is using their doll. I also enjoy the BJD Addicts prompt videos, because it's cool to hear someone else's opinion about a certain topic.

    23. i love the story videos. you know.. the ones that show a line of events or things like that. recently i made one for my Saint when he come to my home.

    24. My favorite are probably box opening videos! It's a great way to see how big the dolls are next to someone, if that person decides to show themselves in the video. And it is a bit satisfying to watch while I'm waiting for my dolls to come in. I do like watching videos of people opening from the company I ordered from, but I will watch pretty much any box opening video. I love seeing people fall in love with their dolls! I definitely plan to make one when mine come in!

Second favorite, are probably bjd family videos. I love seeing other people's dolls and how well (or not well) they fit together. And by not well, I just mean that some people buy dolls that they don't have in the same background story or something like that. Nothing wrong with that!

    25. I really enjoy watching box openings, especially when I'm waiting for a doll since it amps up my own excitement. I also enjoy watching restringing videos and faceup tutorials since I find them educational and strangely relaxing. It's also fun watching addict prompts and just general update videos like current collections with backstories and seeing dioramas. I really like seeing everyone's creativity in the hobby.

    26. I like box opening videos, tutorials and collection videos! :)

    27. I'm not too picky. I really like any videos that are about my hobbies (BJD, books, writing, games.... ect) As long as the video is entertaining, than I will enjoy watching it! I love seeing videos about dolls I am interested in or about dolls that are similar in scale to the dolls I hope to own, so I can get a more clear idea of what the doll will look like in person.

    28. I like good comparison or body review videos. I think the good ones are pretty short and to the point.

    29. I love watching faceup time lapses! And Doll openings, whenever I'm waiting on a new dollie and can't wait.

    30. I like to watch box openings of dolls not commonly seen, tutorials can be very helpful e.g. showing you how to make wigs and I enjoy people showing their complete collection of dolls. I'm don't like videos where someone just rambles on and on, I turn off those very quickly as they are too tedious for me.

    31. I love love love! Box oppenings, the reaction the people have when they open and finally hold their new doll after weeks and weeks of waiting is priceless :D

    32. I've always loved watching box opening videos, even before BJDs! It's nice to be able to share in the excitement of someone getting something new and sharing their thoughts on it, plus I think it helps curb my impulses whenever I feel like spending money, lol. As a newbie it's really informative hearing thoughts from someone with more experience, so I've been bouncing around Youtube listening to reviews and such too these past few weeks.

    33. I like watching videos, but i like watching not just for the dolls but to see a slice of someone elses life. This hobby is enjoyed by people all over the world and it is quite nice seeing others houses, living style and if they film outside their surrounding area.

I do like the box opening vids because it is nice seeing someone get a doll, then later maybe post some pics of it all dressed up.

    34. I love tutorials, even when they're for crafts and projects I wouldn't want to do myself. I just enjoy their incredible creativity! :abow:

I also enjoy body reviews. I've learned a lot.

    35. My favorite videos are the prompts where hobby members discuss questions and topics. I also like tutorial videos for faceups and blushing.

    36. I like watching people do faceups (tutorials). I also really like it when they do body/size/sculpt comparisons (shopping purposes).

Also when they talk about their dolls. Sometimes it's really nice to see people so passionate about their hobbies and characters. :)

    37. I really like watching unboxing, prompts and collection videos. I think prompts give you a really good incite into who you're watching

    38. I love box opening videos. Seeing new doll arriving is really exciting!:love

    39. Being still relatively new to the hobby (nearly 18months) I still really love vox opening videos as these are a great way of finding out about packaging /product reviews etc. I also like watching customisation videos :)

    40. When I have doll plans, I always look for reviews. Posing reviews are the greatest. I also keep my eye out for wig making tutorials, as I am trying to improve my wig making skills.

    41. I like box openings, like... sometimes when I know it's just going to be a long time before I can make a doll purchase, I like to watch someone else's moment of dolly euphoria, get a little secondhand glee. And it's nice when I've already sort of decided what my next will be (though it seems those plans reset every time I have to spend the money on something practical and start saving all over again), because I can just search out videos of a particular doll or company, and see an opening/review to sort of mentally prepare.

I also enjoy going through the BJD addicts prompt videos from time to time, and I really like when people do a little tour of their doll's stuff, like... showing all the little bitty shoes and clothes and talking about where they found some perfect thing to complete their doll's look or habitat.

    42. I like to watch doll openings, especially if I'm researching that one doll I want to buy next. Research ,research is always a good answer. :)

    43. My fav are the stories - stop-motion mainly. I love the DIY project journal kind as well. Box openings can be instructional - when I'm looking to buy a doll from a company I'm not familiar with, or even a new sculpt, I will go looking for a box opening to see what the doll looks like (I do this even if I've already ordered one - as in, limited editions LOL - cause I wanna see LOL)

    44. I love box opening videos and dress up/OOTD videos! ^_^ I really like seeing the dolls people get and seeing the different ways people stylize their dolls a lot. :3

    45. I absolutely love watching box opening videos
Especially when I'm waiting on a doll myself ^_^

    46. Personally, I love watching box opening videos, especially when it's their first BJD. I always enjoyed seeing the excitement in their faces as they open the box and finally get to see their doll in person. I also really like watching the BJD Addict Prompts and hearing their own opinions and/or experiences about certain topics and/or situations.

    47. Honestly i just like watching any type of bjd video people post up. My 2 very fav. types of vids are box opening and tag videos.

    48. I like to watch doll unboxing videos because it gets me excited for my next doll. I also like watching doll clothing haul videos, because.. I don't know. I find it interesting haha.

    49. It depends, and varies on the person making the video! Some people have such darling reactions, I love their box openings. Some people make really great tutorials. And some people have such awesome character/world building videos...

As a whole, I guess I like box openings the most (and making them as well, who doesn't love to get now stuff amirite) , but I don't specifically look them out unless I'm expecting a package from a speficif new company and would like to know what to expect.

I tend to follow people who make things and do videos related to that - be it sewing, faceups, wigs, stories, world building... and also try to follow people who have an inspiring or similar aesthetic to me.

    50. I like videos that are compact. I don't tend to enjoy watching box openings and never seek them out unless I can't find owner photos of a doll I want. They are usually too long and overly drawn out.

I tend to like tutorials for things to do with your dolls or to make things for dolls that are detailed but short. One thing that is a major pet peeve is unedited or under edited videos that show the entire process of one detail. It is very simple to say cut this and sew along the line, and edit out the process of the excruciating process of you cutting and sewing, while brushing your pet away. I find that half the time these videos do things like this, they aren't even showing anything helpful, You'll see the draping of the fabric while most of the sewing happens off camera.

My general rule of thumb is if any tutorial that should be simple takes more than 5 minutes I won't click on it. I realize that plenty of people enjoy this and I mean no offense to them. Just personally, I don't like long drawn out videos.

    51. I love the wine and dollies vids, tutorials, faceup speedpaints, and really any sort of discussion- characters or aspects of the hobby or whatever. Box openings can be fun as well (as long as they don't drag TOO much), I love seeing people so happy and it makes me happy too when it's a grail/ doll I'm about to buy :)

    52. I love box openings and collection videos. I love seeing someone's excitement when they open the box. And I usually like watching them when I'm thinking of getting another doll. With collection videos, I love seeing different sized and styled dolls together.

    53. I'm currently into watching wig making videos. This is mainly because I plan on making a wig sooner or later for my new BJD. I am very new to BJD and have recently subscribed to many people suggested to me. I was surprised by the range and content of those videos. Of those I guess I liked the general videos not really about anything specific the most.

    54. Box openings are fun to watch. I watched so many of them when I was waiting for my first doll to come in.

    55. I love story videos... could be very elaborate with sideshows of dolly pictures, stop-motion, reading out written chapters or it might just be the doll owner rambling about the trials and tribulations of characters and stories, but I really enjoy watching those things :D
Clothing and dress-up videos are nice as well, the doll modeling new outfits it received and the character coming more alive through this is always cool to see.
"Wine & Dollies" is fun to watch too, but I guess I just really like blabbing and rambling about dolls :whee:

    56. I love them all! Box openings are my favorite though.

    57. Unboxng videos! They really help when you're wanting to buy your own doll/or have one on the way, and you feel excitement for the person as they are opening their box.

      • x 1
    58. Unboxing videos for me as well. Especially if they are receiving their first doll. I love watching doll videos in general, but those are my favorite.

    59. I love watching box openings, i get excited with the owner lol and I also get to see what the doll looks like being handled out of the box and i get an idea of what they look like when purchased. Also crafts/tutorials since i get so many ideas on what to do, whether its a faceup, wig making video, or just creating something for them in general. Those videos helped me get into bjds in the first place :)

    60. I love tutorials on anything BJD related and box openings. I lived watching box openings while waiting for my doll to come in. I also liked watching the old BJD prompts videos and really just a basic chit chat about the dolls. I mean honestly, anything that has to do with BJDs, I want to watch it :) Reviews, opinions on topics in the hobby, I love it all
