I, I hope this isn't off-topic for this forum, but while I was mangling my way through sculpting my first head, it sort of came to me that some parts came easier to sculpt than others. In my instance, the nose came out perfectly on the very first try (YAY). When I'm drawing pictures and stuff, usually I spend the most time on the mouth/lips because they're my favorite part to draw. However, when I tried sculpting the mouth, it became the hardest thing to sculpt, took the most time, and still didn't come out right in the end! So from your experiences, what are some of your favorite/difficult parts to sculpt? ^^
I agree...mouth is so difficult to sculpt! but i must admit that sculpting all head's part it's difficult for me...not only the mouth!
the mouth is indeed very hard, but it's also my favourite ^^ also, the eye shape is very hard +_+ because it looks fine at first, but then I put the eyes in and he looks all weird..so now I'm trying to put the eyes in and then sculpt around them..perhaps that will work better.. the nose is pretty easy, and fun to do ^^ and ears
I LOVE to sculpt heads. It's my favorite. Hands and feet are my least favorite to sculpt. To sculpt the mouth I build up around the chin and under the nose, where the mouth will be. Sort of as if the character was wearing a scarf over their mouth? Then I take an exacto and cut a line into that area where I want the mouth to be. I take a curved tool and insert it into the slit and slowly force it apart and create lips by pressing with the curved tool and a sharpened pencil eraser. When I get an open mouth shape I like, I gently press on the head's chin till the moth closes. :3
I love sculpting the eyes. Ive recently managed to make them look very Bishoujo and childlike (that open-eyed, smiling look...hard to describe) and when Ive sculpted the little mouth I cant help but smile back while Im working!
i looove sculpting feet, and thighs... that's actually my favorite lol. Heads come next. the ears were difficutl for me...and just roughing the head out at first. eyelids are the worst tho...mine kept breaking off (if i made them too thick the eyes looked wierd in the head). Overall the head is fun and comes easily enough. The worst thing to sculpt for me...is the joints. I've done and baked and sanded and scraped at and worked on dude's joints for oh so long...and hey, he still doesn't bloody work! *goes to cry in a corner*
I think probably the worst thing is carving out the eye wells so the eyes will fit in all snuggly and perfectly. Besides that I find lips hard too.
The eyes were by-far the hardest part of the head! It always seemed that they didn't have quite the right look - and the eyes are so important in defining the face... The eyelids are hard too. I couldn't even figure out how to do them for the longest time.
I just love sculpting the torso. I have started making my own bjd about a week ago, and I have two torso's lying around now. One for an msdboy, one for a tinygirl. The msd one is two part, the tinygirl one is onepart. I have immense troubls with the head..I need to get some tiny eyes for the girl, I think I'll finish her off first. ^^
I pretty much love aaaaall the sculpting, though the head is definitely my favourite part; I always do that first, because once I have a head, I make the body with a personality to match it if you know what I mean (like making petite hands for somebody whose face is refined, or large feet for someone loud :P). My least favourite would have to be doing ball-joints. I much prefer mortise and tenon joints (like hinge joints), but I love experimenting with different joint-systems in my dolls - most of them end up with combinations of different types, actually - so I'm perfecting the ball-joint idea at the moment. I'm not sure why I dislike doing them so much...I just...do >.>
I love sculpting hands. It's a part which is expressive, for me. It's not difficult, I think. I don't love scuplting joints. It's a pure technical part, it's really interesting for me !
I love sculpting in general, but my favorite parts would have to be the torsos. I seem to be able to create those fairly easy, unlike female faces- which is weird because I'ma chick. O.o;; Anywho, past that, legs and arms give me worlds of trouble. Hands and feet aren't too hard, I just don't have a love of making them... XD But whats a doll without those, eh?
As far as their faces go, just to be in opposition to everyone here, I have a heck of a time with the noses. I find it very difficult to get the nostrils symetrical. And my mother does not help by saying 'The nostrils don't match' every time I show her a doll... For body parts, fingers and nipples. Fingers are so fond of breaking when I try to sand them smooth and nipples have the dual challenge of trying to get them symetrical and trying to get them into a properly nippley shape. And again, so unlike all the previous responses, the eyes are my favorite part of the face to do. I still need my bevels to get the backs of them well, but I really enjoy shaping them and making them come alive. I also like the stomach muscles and the backs for body parts and, again so unlike previous responses, I really love playing with the joints. My brain is really geared towards figuring stuff like that out. The features are all aesthetic but the joints require so much enginereing too.
For faces - I HATE doing the little details in humanoid ears…and getting the eyes symmetrical. >_> arg! I love doing lips and the cheeks. As for whole bodies – I adore making torsos but really loath making knee joints. XD; I strangely like doing feet and hands, they are time consuming but not hard for me.
I can't stand lips, and yet I love them. They feel, to me, like the most important thing in a sculpt- so I love them as I tweak them to make the character completely different. But I hate them for being so annoying to get JUST RIGHT. I only JUST got them to a point where I'm happy. And yet they look so easy. Ialso find the very basic head shape to be annoying, actually. xD Maybe it's partially because I'm using nothing but an excel blade and my fingers to shape him. Hahah... I should post pics soon.
Ii totally agree with the mouth thing. I sculpted my first BJD head this week - my first anything head, actually - and the nose came out fine the first time, and the ears were fun and easy, I really liked doing them. :3 But the mouth took me five tries, and it still doesn't look that good. x.x But I just cooked it and gave up. I mean, it's sculpey. I can always try again for really cheap. XD
