Hello, all! This is part of a larger project to get my doll completely styled, but it's going to take me a while to get around to the blushing, magnets, etc. (waiting for good weather to work outside and avoid faceup fumes and resin dust >.>) so I'm just going to focus on her wardrobe right now! This is my currently unnamed Souldoll Jiu on the Souldoll Moa animal body. She'll be a sheep faun! Unfortunately, the magnets in her horns aren't working so right now it's just her little hooves that give it away... she also does not have a name yet so I'm completely open to any suggestions. I think a soft mori kei aesthetic will fit her sheep theme the best. I have a bunch of inspo pics saved on my computer but I wasn't sure if I could share them because I don't have sources to credit them to... so might as well get to the meat of the sewing! This is the first fabric I'm working with: It's a very lightweight knit scrap of a garment. It has a pre-made ruffle on it that I though would look good on the edge of a skirt or dress. I decided to make a full dress out of it. I started with a basic tapered shape and sewed up the sides to form this... sack... I don't want any of her clothes to look too structured but this is too shapeless! A ribbon around the waist fixed it though. Now I had to decided whether or not to add sleeves, I tested one just layed on top and liked the look of it, but once it was actually sewn in I wasn't too sure.... I think maybe the seam is too far over and it's going to make her shoulders look big but it'll be a lot of work unstitching... I also kind of like the look of it without the sleeve? So I'm on the fence whether or not I re-do it That's the start of it! I plan on also making her at least the following items: - shawl - top (sweater or button down, maybe both!) - a couple skirts to layer - another dress - cardigan Thanks for reading! (p.s. it looks like there's a bunch of broken images in this post but they're all just duplicates of the ones that do show up)
She's a beautiful doll! I love fauns! The pre made ruffle on the fabric looks great on her dress and I can't wait to see the completed outfit!
@CheshireCat Thank you! I really need to get her horns sanded and magnetized so it's more obvious what she is >.> I probably finish in a couple days, I'm hand-sewing everything so it take much longer
I noticed other people have posted inspo photos in their project threads just with faces cropped out so here are some examples of the aesthetic I'm trying to achieve:
I really like the shape after you added waist belt. Personally I prefer version without sleeves, it would probably be easier to put on and style cardigan this way? The aesthetic photos are also wonderfully cozy and fitting for a faun. Exactly what I'll be looking for one of my dolls so thanks for the inspo! She'll be very lovely faun
@silmaryel I've definitely decided no sleeves! I agree it'll be easier to put a cardigan on over top of it. I'd love to see what you do with your doll
So now that I've decided on no sleeves, I need to decide I I want to add a finished edge. Here, one side is finished while the other has the raw edge. While I fret over the details, I decided to move on to the cardigan! I''m using... socks! Very classy. One of them I already tried to turn into a sweater dress so I'm working with less fabric than I'd have otherwise, which means no mistakes! But I'm already rather displeased with the way the fabric drapes on her. I don't mind the lack of waistline, but the neckline is not sitting how I expected it to. I'm just not experienced with predicting how fabrics work in the miniature I could have it sit closed or open. I like the silhouette of the closed look better but the open look is better from the front. I'm pretty stuck tbh. I think the open look could be nice if maybe I stitched it down but will it look too bulky when I add sleeves? Do I need sleeves or is she just perpetually sleeveless?? I guess I'll have to try them to find out! Ultimately I'd like to knit her a cardigan and sweater, so maybe i can live with imperfection in the meantime.
I like her look already, so no help there... what you can do re the sleeves is give her armwarmers (like legwarmers...but for arms xD), so they're not attached to the shoulders and give an even more Boho vibe?
Sock fabric is amazing for creating socks, leggings, shirts and other tight fitting clothes for a doll as it is so extremely elastic. Creating outerwear with it is a little bit more challenging, but it can be done. You really inspired me to create a cardigan for my doll now as well ^___^. Please keep us updated!
Keep at it! I feel like tacking down the collar of the sock-cardigan would look nice. Are you planning on adding sleeves to it?
Hello everyone thank you for the kind words and encouragement! Her dress is officially done (I didn't want to call it done until I had the fastener sewn on the back) AND after many years with this doll I have finally named her: Agatha! Before I get back to work sewing, here are some glamour shots of the dress:
So. I have taken two steps forward one step back with the cardigan. I cut out a strip of the cableing to trim the bottom and make the edge look more finished. I used another strip to add a little cinch in the waist at the back... or at least tried to, it's too low and is actually closer to her butt than her waist I also added a button in the front to pull the waist in a little... and it is also too low. Like. It's bad. But I can't undo it because I can't hide the button hole! I also have had mixed results with sewing the collar down to be open. I think sewing down the entirety of one edge was a bad idea, so I'm going to have to undo that and hope that the raw edge isn't too frayed from the repeated stress of sewing and unstitching. At least I'm pleased with the way the sleeves look! I'm a little frustrated so I'm turning my attention to the next clothing item, I think a top and a layered skirt set! I've ordered some sheer silk fabrics in neutral colors that haven't shipped yet but for now here are my fabrics I have to work with: @Sharkyra Ah that makes me so happy to hear you're inspired to make your own! You should totally post pics somewhere when you finish it.
The dress turned out beautiful and looks really lovely on your Agatha! (And hey, I'm glad to learn that I'm apparently not the only one not naming their dolls or at least not naming them instantly... ) I do understand your frustration with the cardigan though. It's annoying to spend so much time working on something and yet in the end it still doesn't feel quite right or at least not the way you anticipated it. The best advice I can give you is to always, always double (heck, even triple, quadruple, quintuple) check the item on your doll before sewing it. Even if you're following a pattern that was made for this particular doll body, always try it on your doll again and again, to make sure everything sits in place. Mark the positions on where you intend closures, darts, etc, to be when the garment is on your doll. It makes life so much easier and it will spare you a lot of frustrations in the long run. Other than that I also like the sleeves, it looks like a proper cardigan with them. I also like the one-button-closure and yes, I agree with you it would have looked better if you had placed it somewhat higher. The stash for your skirt set already looks promising. Alright, will do. At least I already figured out which doll is going to be th e one to get the cardigan and I've also found the material. So I'm good to go. Maybe I should open up a journal here as well to keep me more motivated? ^__^
@Sharkyra Yeah checking the fit is EXACTLY where I went wrong. I was lazy and getting her hands through the sleeves is a HUGE pain in the butt so I wasn't checking as much as I knew I should be. Won't be making that same mistake again... I'm thinking the way to "fix" the placement of the button closure would be to add a second one higher up but I'd also have to choose a different button style because I don't have another flower so I'm reluctant to move forward with that idea plus I also like the one button look. I'm unfortunately out of sock fabric so I can't just replace the front panel. I would definitely say that having a journal is good motivation. After getting replies I started feeling guilty for not posting my progress for over a week! Making a goal to keep a regular posting schedule is more or less the same as making a goal to get a certain amount of work done on the project.
