How to Make Wig Stands 1. Hightail it to your local crafts store. 2. Go to the section where they have lots of little wooden dowel things; most often, one can assume that this is the section where you can get wooden 'wheels' and things for making toy go-carts. 3. Look around for round balls about the size of your doll's head. Make sure they're flat on the bottom with pre-drilled holes (unless you're willing to drill yourself. >> ) Styrofoam works well, too! Just make sure that those styrofoam balls aren't completely impaled -- they'll slide down the stick and they won't be a wigstand anymore XD;;;; 4. Look for some sturdy dowels that suit the wig that you're thinking of making the stands for (I got extra long dowels so that I could plop my really long wig on one and not have it crimping at the bottom or something equally horrific) 5. Look for some wooden 'wheels'; consider balance. For instance, if you have long dowels/styrofoam balls and a fairly heavy rounded wooden topper, then it's best to get the largest wooden 'wheels' that you can, or else your wig stand...won't stand. But keep in mind that the holes in the 'wheels' have to be equal to or a bit smaller than the circumference of your dowel, or else it just won't work; the dowels have to fit in the 'wheel''s center fairly snugly in order for it to stand. 6. Buy these. (I don't advise stealing them O_o) 7. Go home (Or do it in your car XD;; ) 8. Fit the wooden/styrofoam ball thing on one end of the dowel, and the 'wheel' at the base. 9. You may have troubles with the wooden ball thing. Remedy this with a scissor; insert the pointy end of the scissor into the hole, and turn it until enough wood is shaved off on the inside that you can get the dowel into it. 10. Stand your wig stand and plop your wig onto it--you're done!!!! Keep in mind that even these wig stands aren't that great at balancing; just keep it standing somewhere that no slamming doors or running will wiggle the surface that they're standing on, or else you'll have to keep picking them up, and then what's the point of a wig stand? O-o Also, make sure that all of these parts don't have a finish on them that may possibly rub off on your wigs. Granted, I've never seen a store that sells these kinds of parts with finish on them, but there's a first time for everything.
Serenia, Thanks for the great idea. By the way - you're great at giving instructions (especially the advice not to steal it - ha ha)!
^^ I'm glad it helped you! I was a bit worried that it'd get all muddled around the middle, because the only parts that I knew names for were the dowels..... and consequently, 'wheels' and 'round ball things' were the next obvious choice. O_o
Ah! Sorry. Should've looked more when I ran the Search. They're a tad different than yours only in that the base is individual for each stand...that's all.
I have a fun idea... those wooden spheres sorta look like some knobs on kitchen cabinets & things... put them there, & let your family freak out. XDD
OMG Thank you so much for this, I don't know why I never thought of this before. I must now go run to the store and buy!
Ah both ways are very nice ^^ i think i might have to go try this.. as somehow ive acquired more wigs xD; edit, i made a wig stand. I love it, thanks so much for the tutorial. I ended up usuing a styrofoam ball instead of a wodden ball.
Also great to stick in a piece of wood as a wig stand are egg whisks, especially the ones with the metal handles, looks spiffy.
If wieght is a big problem (to top heavy) you could replace the wooden ball with a stryofoam one probably right? like for the solar system science fair projects?
I like styrfoam balls with this system because I can pin into them and hold the wig in place if I want to style it. BUT I cover the styrfoam with fabric gathered and tied at the bottom/post because I don't want styrfoam bits in the wig. I then clamp the whole thing to a table at style away. This is not good for anything with hot water though....
Minor addition: Using wood glue or E-6000 to hold everything together will keep things from coming apart.
