40โ€“49cm Dolls Fashion Doll sized lady (zbrush plans/clay finish!)

Nov 4, 2014

    1. Hi everyone! Long time no see!
Had to take a big old break from doll sculpting to get married :)
Now that things have settled down again, I started to play around with clay and work on that old project of mine.

So in my old thread I was working digitally, with the initial plan to print out this lil lady:

But I have started playing around with clay a bit, and using the zbrush print out as a guide I've started creating a new doll.
It's really soothing to come home after working digitally all day to work with some real world materials.
These pics are after about a week of progress. I'm trying to go pretty quickly because I know how I can get caught up by other things. :o I'd really love to finish her this time!

Anywho, Here are the super rough pics:

    2. she's pretty cute! i like her face :D what kind of clay are you using?

    3. Thanks du-hast!
I'm using some air dry amaco brand clay in grey. I've been keeping it in bags to stay a little wet while I work. I did a sanding test on a test piece, and it seems to do well when bone dry. Gets a little brittle though, so I'll be using apoxie to do some of the more delicate work, and then primer to give it more strength. Has a good feel overall though, and it's super nice for carving into when partially dried.

    4. This is very promissing, I love her face already
Not sure how the clay you're using goes, but I've been using Aepoxy for my doll heads and it's great if you don't want to worry with breakage. Keep going! I look forwards to see her polished up

    5. She's beautiful! I bet she'll be awesome when she's done! I look forward to seeing how she turns out. :love

    6. Thanks so much guys!! It's been a slow process having to wait till after work each day, but it sure has been relaxing to get away from my computer :)
I'm probably going to do a lot of the joint work and tiny tiny hands with apoxie, just for strength.

Some work re-doing the legs. Scrapped em a few times, but I'm finally pretty happy with this iteration

Close up of some head refinements. Added ears and hollowed out the inside a bit. Needs more work, but it's starting to get somewhere

More torso refinement. Still need to work on the inside a bit more.

    7. Wow, I'm digging her features. The texture looks hard as rock @_@ Is it troublesome to carve it?

    8. Love your work! Can't wait to see more!

    9. in love with her face! and those ears! her body! I love all of her! I cannot wait to see more. I love seeing what different kinds of materials different people use and you have definitely mastered that clay! i might have to pick some up... wait no no more projects... ;)

    10. Hi guys! Thanks so much!
Disaster has just struck! While she was drying and being sanded she began to crack badly... and I can confirm that while this clay is amazing to sculpt with...unfortunately it dries very brittle. For that reason I'm going to not recommend this clay.

Her upper and lower torso both cracked and split apart in thin spots..and her leg as well, which I'm totally bummed about :(
But it's not a wasted experience as I really felt I learned a lot about this scale, and what I would like in a doll. I'm going to regroup/re-plan and start again soon!

    11. :C Oh what a shame sweetheart. I hope you can manage to save something at least.
My first doll head was started in a crappy material as well, so I had to re-work him almost from scratch using the old head as base.
The attitude that you learned with it is the best way to deal with this situations. Keep up that spirit!

    12. Oh no! I'm really sorry to hear about that. Good luck on your remake of her.
