FAQ: White residue forming while removing a faceup?

Jun 24, 2005

    1. I cant say for certain without pictures but if you mean you've washed and rinsed her in some kind of dish cleaner after cleaning off her faceup, it can occasionally leave a sort of dry white residue. It comes off though if you keep rinsing the head clean and gently wipe with a cloth.
If it's the resin itself which has turned white... sometimes faceups can make resin appear quite a lot darker. If she's only partially cleaned, try cleaning her all up and see if the whole head is that colour.

    2. It sounds right to me...but try and keep scrubbing, since the cotton bud isn't going to take much off on it's own ¦D;

    3. I do believe the white bits may be sealant (MSC or whatnot) that has reacted to the rubbing alchohol.....maybe try rubbing over a bit more to take it all off.

    4. I use a soft tooth brush for removing face-ups and it works just fine. No scratches.

    5. alcohol will leave a white residue on the resin, when its dry you can even scrape it off with your nail. ..it think its a reaction with the MSC..washing the head in soapy water will take it off too.

    6. I can use a baby toothbrush? I have that at home. It has started to go better, but i think this will be a long process :) Will try with dishcloth now. Thanks for your help!!

    7. Omg so I finally worked up the courage to take off the Dollzone faceup on my Mo doll and after getting it off when the water was dried off, some calcuim looking white powder started showing up on the face around the top of the head, nose, and ears! It seems to come off with alcohol but then it just shows back up when it dries! We've taken off faceups before with NO problems and I'm a little worried about my boy! :...( Does anyone know how to get rid of this or what it even is?! Help!!! *_*

    8. Its usually msc buildup from my experience. I just scrub at it with a Mr.Clean magic eraser soaked with alcohol and then rinse with water.

    9. REALLY?! Thank you so much! I'll try that now!

    10. I just thought I'd tell you that that worked thank you so much! I was getting really worried! :)

    11. Ah, iibleachedii beat me to the answer. It is just a slight build up of sealant and it comes off rather easily. The times I've taken the face up off my doll, I've seen the same white residue.

    12. Ooh! glad I saw this! I'm having trouble getting the same stuff out of my doll's ears! Luckily, It is barely noticeable when you reseal it (I was too impatient to keep cleaning it over and over again) and you only notice it if you are really looking for it, but it's nice to know there is a way to get it off completely!

    13. Is there any substitute to this Mr Clean Magic Eraser?

    14. It can actually also be alcohol residue. Just take water and dishsoap to clean it off the head. You can also use your nail and gently scrape it off.

    15. I had some on my DZ girl that was really stuck on... I scrubbed it a million times with water and alcohol, and some other stuff and even gently scraped it off with my finger nail..... eventually I gave up and redid her faceup anyways. When I took off THAT faceup, I must have not coated her right, so I had some staining from the darker colors of her faceup. I used that windsor and newton brush cleaner stuff, and it got rid of the dark colors AND the white residue.

    16. There is a special sticky thread in the Painting forum all about Magic Eraser; you might get some help there in finding a substitute in your country.

    17. I agree on the possiblility of alchohol residue. If you used nailpolish remover to take it off, it probably had acetone in it. Which is baaaaaaaad.

    18. i've had this same buildup, and nothing seems to be taking it out of the tiny cracks in the ears. alcohol, magic eraser, soap and water, nothin. if i find a solution, ill post it here ;)

    19. Have you tried a soft toothbrush and Windsor & Newton brush cleaner and restorer? I had a problem getting it out of the ears before trying a toothbrush. The alcohol may not work because it requires more scrubbing and its hard to get a good scrubbing action going in the earholes!

I've had it on second hand dolls where people have obviously given up trying to clean the ears (as I have done before toothbrush & W&N) and have just resprayed, so the build up is worse then. In an especially bad case I used the blunt side of a blade of (very very small) scissors to scrape it away, but you have to be careful not to scratch the resin. I only did this when the coat was very thick and crusty (gross!).

    20. i think its just a but of MSC or Testors that hasn' completely come off, its happend to me more then once. just wash the head again and makesure to scrub everywhere with whatever you normally use and it should come off

    21. Whatever it is, alcohol or MSC/Testors residue, it'll come off with some more scrubbing. I just redid the faceup on my DZ head today and had the exadct same thing happen. It DID come off with some magic eraser and elbow grease :)
(funny trivia? In Denmark, "elbow grease" is known as "knuckle grease" ;) )

    22. For some reason Mr Thinner leaves behind a white residue on my doll heads ^^;;

After wiping the faceup I wash it with dishwashing soap and a soft toothbrush, then use the Magic Sponge on it. While wet the head looks completely clean.

The trouble is that once it's dried a sort of white powdery coating will have formed on the head. I can remove it with the magic sponge, but it takes a lot of effort (I've been cleaning this one head four or five times a day the last couple of days now -- the white stuff is almost gone but so is my patience ^^;; ). It looks like MSC sprayed in rainy weather (though it probably isn't).

Anyone else have this trouble or any advice on how to remove/avoid it?

    23. jinlin I had the white residue before. I was doing my doll's faceup when half a bottle of Mr Thinner spilled on my doll's face. I just washed it with water and the white stuff disappeared. I read it somewhere in DOA that it is not the resin melting, but the MSC melting, so you don't have to worry too much :)

    24. iLust4Plastic Thanks for the reply.

That's just the mystery. I washed the heads afterwards with soap to get rid of it. It looks ok when wet, but once it dries there's this white stuff... My only solution so far is to keep cleaning it with a (wet) magic sponge, four or five times a day, for four or five days... Not really an efficient solution =.=

    25. iLusst4Plastic, surprisingly, I'm actually not worried about the residue as much as annoyed with it. I know it's not the resin melting, since it flakes off quite easily and comes off with the magic sponge.

Thanks for the link! It's a very long thread... *settles down to read. ^_^

    26. Hey guys!

Okay, I have a green-skinned Bobobie Sprite. She's awesome. A handful of days ago I took off her factory face-up under the supervision of other doll-owners at a doll meet using brush cleaner. Winsor-something..? I didn't like the look of my first face-up, so today I tried to wipe it again -- this time using a different brush cleaner brand, and it was a horror to remove. It barely took anything off, even with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser!

So I switched to using 70% isopropyl rubbing alchohol on her, and it worked like a charm -- but now her resin has strange white crusts on it that seem to be able to be picked off if I use a very sharp instrument very carefully.

What are these crusts, and how can I remove them? @__@ They're very unsightly and preventing me from sealing her so I can start face-up number 2. (She's sitting in a warm water bath with soap as we speak. @_@)

EDIT: I saw a thread similar to this one, but I tried all of the suggestions on it and they haven't had success. T___T People say it's a build-up of MSC, or alchohol residue... maybe I just need to be even more diligent in my cleaning..?

      Assistance would be greatly appreciated!

      --Jingles

    27. Those white things are remains of the sealant that react that way with the alcohol, but it's not the resin melting or something like that, so don't worry ;).

You have to clean up the head with alcohol again until everything comes off and then wash it with a citric liquid to wash dishes and then let it dry very well.
After that your doll will be ready for a new face up! :)

    28. Go to the art store and see if you can find windsor newton brush cleaner. it pulls off all of that stuff. If you really want a slick way of doing it. buy a BIG bottle (13$ about) and a ziploc bowl with a twist top.. then fill the bowl up drop the head in it and leave it for a few minutes.. I leave my kids up to an hour if need bee. but I dont' know how that resin will react. then take a tooth brush and push it in the bowl and scrub it while its under the liquid. pull it out.. I use plain old diswashing liquid to clean off the newton kind of oily feel and then dry.

    29. I third the statement about the white blotches being leftover sealant! :)

Don't worry! I just gave my boy a new faceup and when I cleaned off his old faceup, I got the white blotches, too. :sweat I just had to spend a little extra time in cleaning him.

Windsor Newton might be a good idea; just make sure you test how it reacts to your resin first!

      Good luck! :)

    30. Thanks so much for your assistance, you three. I did as Stratolilly suggested, and just rinsed her off. I'm waiting for her to air-dry as we speak, so I'll keep you posted.

EDIT: It worked. Thank you! :D

    31. I think it's a reaction. I used a mister clean eraser before the MSC was dry enough (yes, I'm that stupid XP) and that happened. I've yet to remove it because I'm lazy and it's almost finals week. I have a really bad case of doll apathy. @___@

    32. Please, help! I am horrified... :...( It is a howl of despair... :o!
I tried to make my first face up... First was a layer of MSC flat. But there was too much of MSC and I decided to remove it... Nail color remover without aceton dd not wirk... I used nail color remover with aceton... And now there are a lot of white stains on the head! :...( I can not remove them... It is only possible by nail scrubbing but there are scratches after that and I can not scrub into the ear and nose... What should I to do? May be there is any strong cleaner? Shiwoo's head looks terrible... :...(:...(:...(

    33. Usually, when removing a faceup, there are "white stains" when all of the MSC or other spray isn't completely off. Keep trying to remove the layer of spray and the white color will be gone.

    34. Don't worry about it, it happens to everyone when removing a faceup. ;) Usually the removal solution that you're using will stick to any remaining sealant to cause white 'splotches.' Just take a clean Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and soak it in some water instead of remover and use that to scrub off the extra solution that is still stuck to the face. I use Isopropyl Alcohol, and every time I remove a faceup I get those white splotches, but they're very easy to clear off. :)

In the future, I would also suggest using non-acetone nail polish remover. Acetone can do MUCH worse to your doll than a few white splotches.

    35. I tried. Almost whole day... Only scrubbing works... but nose and ears...

    36. Here in Russia we do not have Mr. Clean Magic Eraser... :( And how to get off stains from ears and nose?

    37. Ehh, this topic's been covered a million times, I believe. You can use rubbing alcohol/99% alcohol and a soft-bristled toothbrush with a bit of scrubbing, that should solve your problem.

    38. Ah! Well, the eraser basically works like a very soft sandpaper, so I'm sure with some EXTREMELY light (like as light as you could possibly get) sanding you could achieve the same effect.

For the ears/nose, usually I'd just jab the sponge in there and then anything left I would scrape at very carefully with a toothpick/Qtip/other pointy but not TOO point object. If worse comes to worse, I have gone for the exacto knife before- but that was an extremely last-case precaution, and I would not reccommend it if you do not trust yourself holding that near your doll. The whiteness in the very deep crevices of the ears typically are not seen with a wig/faceup on, in any case.

    39. i use a cotton pad and mr color thinner. mr color thinner can be purchased from leekeworld.us (along with very purty wigs) why more people dont have this as a staple before doing face ups, is completely beyond me. same thing happend to me. i just plopped more thinner on some cotton and kept wiping, then rinsing her in water. worked fine.

    40. Thanks, I will try...

    41. Mr. color thinner? Not Mr. thinner?

    42. Hey to all the great face-up artists....

I am having a problem that i'm not sure what to do about. I spray the MSC, and when it dries, it dries like a white paint, instead of MSC. It leaves a white haze over all the work i've done. I'm getting frustrated. I've got face-up commissions piling up, and everytime i get a piece completed, and put the final coat of MSC on it leave this white haze over the piece. Then i have to strip it, and then redo it AGAIN. One of the heads, i'm on the 4 time redoing it.

      I've tried everything.

First, i thought maybe it was the humidity, but i've had it happen in the winter too....then i thought maybe i had not shaken the can enough before hand, and it still did it after i througoughly mixed the stuff. Then i thought maybe i had not taken off all the Non-acetone. I stripped the head, washed it extremly thoroughly, and it still does it.

      What do i do?? :(

    43. There are a couple reasons this could be happening:

      1) the MSC is old. I've found that my older cans of MSC don't work as well (wipe off), or get cloudy. - If this is not the reason, keep reading. ^^

      2) the MSC has been left in the sun. I left a can in the sun once and it left a white residue on the face-up. ;_; I threw it out immediately.

      3) if it's only happening on the later coats, you could be using too many coats. Are you using more than you used to? I find that if I use more than 3 or 4 coats, the face-up gets really white and pasty. I try to use as little as possible during the face-up process, and double-coat it at the end.

If it's none of these reasons, sorry I couldn't help!

    44. hmmmm, i might be using too much overall...i am so paranoid at the idea of ruining my face-up steps that i coat in between steps...maybe that's it.

    45. I have found that if i take a Q-tip and dip it in the non-acetone, and then rub it over the white a few times, it takes off most of the white....like on theeyebrows...so i won't have to do them over again....etc.

    46. How long are you letting the heads dry (after washing them)? I have this happen sometimes if the head still has moisture trapped inside of it :/

    47. You could also be spraying too close in your rush. Or you could be spraying too much with each coat; a variation of the too-many-coats problem.

    48. it's wierd because i've never had this problem before....only recently. I lived in Florida, and never had a problem down there...but it seems that up here, i'm having problems with the MSC, that is why i thought it might have to do with the weather outside.

    49. It's likely not the weather -- if you use a lot of coats, you'll get the white residue. Anything more than four coats will start looking white/pasty. ^^

    50. Agree that you are using too much here, that and it is just part of the msc, it tends to be whiter no matter how much you use. I coat my faceups max 3 to 4 times and use as little as possible but they still look white.

Also weather does have a bad effect, when its too humid or raining outside my msc tends to bubble and not set right for some reason.

But I hate the MSC anyway, I use the volks stuff, it doesnt have that white residue problem.

    51. Spray lighter. And make sure the head is 18 inches away from the can. I had the same problem with ZM spray and my lilac resin doll was so easily clouded up, it was icky. Do a very light spray, and don't do it again til the face is done...after about 3 coats, she started to go cloudy, is what I found, so I made sure I did two good ones, for the base and then after I completed the faceup.

    52. I had this problem. You're just spraying it a little too close :) I found that if you very carefully wipe a wet washcloth over the doll's face, let it dry, then repeat a few times the haze disappears. Then you'll probably have to spray again but you'll hopefully be able to save the faceup this way :)

But yes, may want to watch out for spraying on too many layers as well :) (although I put tons of layers on my girl with no clouding)

    53. I was using some nail polish remover to clean the faceup from one of my heads, and it's left a white powdery residue where i've used it. It dissapears when put in water but reappears as soon as the head dries. I've tried washing it with water many times and it won't go away. What can I do? Any help is greatly appreicated.

    54. This is just the nail polish remover binding to the sealant that you haven't scrubbed off. There's still a residue on the head. Nothing to worry about! Get a toothbrush and some Winsor & Newton brush cleaner and restorer and dip the toothbrush in the brush cleaner and scrub away on that head. A Mr.Clean Magic Eraser with the brush cleaner works like a charm too. A little bit of patience will get that nasty chalk-ish leftover right off! :D

    55. this happened so badly on my friends head, I actually had to let the white residue from the sealant dry, then chip it off piece by piece with my nail, even with brush cleaner it didnt' want to come off!

    56. Did you try the search function before posting this? This is asked All. The. Time. As the others have said, it's just sealant that hasn't completely come off yet.

    57. Did the nail polish remover have acetone? Because I believe if you use any acetone on resin you're supposed to make a baking soda/water paste and put it on to remove any 'acid' left behind. (Not sure if everyone does this, it's just what I've been told)

      ~Chaos :daisy

    58. All it is is left over sealer!!! Just get some Windsor and Neutrons brush cleaner!!! Works like MAGIC!!!
