Sewing Fantasy Threads: Patterns and Progress on Medieval/Renaissance Fantasy Designs

Dec 18, 2011

    1. So, you actually had TWELVE Dancing Princesses? That's a lot of fancy girls. Do you have any photos from that day?

I'm not much of a photographer, but these show the Princesses as a group. All the gowns are silk except the cotton velveteen on the standing SD girl in red cotton velveteen and the standig SD girl in the blue printed cotton.

    3. What a beautiful group! A real "Princess Party". I love how they are all different ages. That must have been one huge job to make so many, and in so little time. They are such pretty colours and fabrics. Are those medieval inspired gowns silk?

    4. Yep. These outfits made quite a dent in my stash of silk offcuts (mostly leftovers from full-size costumes from my own and friends' sewing-rooms).

The medieval ones were relatively fast. They're mosty 4-panels in the body plus the sleeves, so go together quickly. Ones based on Renaissance and 16th Century styles took longer. The wine and chocolate coloured one on the redheaded Chibi Unoa girl is a gown and overgown, so I took the longest.

      Teddy

    5. What I think is really cool, is how you have all different ages of princesses. I've never thought of it that way before. Most fairytale books have the twelve sisters more or less the same age - which would have technically been impossible if you really stop and think about it.

I think it could be very effective to try shoot a fairy tale photo story using appropriately dressed BJDs. A TON of work, but ever so impressive.

    6. That always bothered me when I was a child - Unless they were several multiple births or had several mothers, they were always too close in age for it to make sense..... I prefer the age-spread approach.

Beyond my patience, let alone photographic skill, but it would be a wonderful project.

      Teddy

    7. what a beautiful princess and gorgeous outfits. you will fine fellow.:)

    8. Thanks elekroshka,

      Teddy

    9. wow fabulous dress and costumes renaissance. I love it.

    11. Niiiiiice - I love the little skull on the front, such a nice little touch.

      Teddy

    12. The beadwork on your harem outfit is wonderful.

    13. Wow, everyone is so talented! My sewing skills are pretty minimal, but I want to make fantasy clothes for my dolls too. I have a pattern for a cloak and an idea for a striped silk skirt. I'm pretty good at making things out of polymer clay, so I can make my own tiny buttons, and maybe some kinds of armor and weapons as well. Looks like I've got quite the project for the summer!

    14. I'm currently working on a dress for my doll, so far she has a bodice so it's going slowly. I'll take a WIP picture soon enough so I can get advice on improving it.

    15. A bodice is a good start... It's often the most complicated part so it''s good to get it sorted first.

      Teddy

    16. I actually used MB Lilac's way to make a bodice on her Christine costume (I think it's Christine, Phantom of the Opera) using plastic wrap and tape to get a body form and using a marker pen to make the lines. It worked like a treat and was the easiest bodice I've ever had the pleasure of working on. The woman is a genius!

    17. All the outfits in this thread are incredible!
MB Liliac, your pieces are flawless. Definitely subscribing to this thread!

    18. Finished a Renaissance dress for a local convention I'l attend
      [IMG]

    19. Oh lovely! That color looks great on her.

    20. Sweet!

And that wig is great too.

      Teddy

    21. i can't wait to get all my skirts done and posted in here!
I love this thread soo much, and soon i can participate.

But here is a outfit i made for my Djaq a while back, unfortunately it was stolen along with some of my dolls.. but i figured i should post the pictures anyway...

    22. There is a lot of inspiration here!! Wonderful designs~

    23. I am working on a very large outfit right now. I am getting the new Iplehouse EID girl doria and plan to make her Queen Elizabeth 1. So far i have her ruff made with the aid of my big boy I have here while i wait for her. I am making her a hand rooted human hair wig later this week when the caps get here. But i figured id share some passed projects along with the ruff I made. I love the Renaissance era so much.

    24. Wow Crystalinewings! You're very talented! Stunning work

    25. Beautiful work, all!

Oh Crystallinewings, what material is your boy's cape made from? The drape is fantastic! The bow you sculpted just glows, and the ruff...OK, I love every single thing you posted. XD

Also I'm so curious, what's in the terrarium behind the lady in blue?!

    26. awesome works!! sorry I didn't bring my work here, cuz I even didn't start it yet, I want to sew some shirts for my boy, and I have to admit im a lazy girl. however, after I saw so much s=adorable work, I really made my determination, hope some day Ill share my work here with you~~!!!! ^ ^

    27. Wow. your outfits are amazing!!!!!

    28. Wow!! Crystalinewings Gorgeous Outfits. you are really talented. i love the bow :D

    29. Thank you everyone ^_^ I will post more when I have progress on my gown for Elizabeth.

T4124: That is the home my leopard geckos are in ^_^. They are being moved to a larger tank soon. they are growing fast and running out of room in there. The cloak is made from a cotton/rayon velvet mix. Its thinner but heavy so it falls nice. He is also 73cm so his size helps too.

    30. Wow Crystallinewings....you work is simply awsome

    31. Oh wow! Some very attractive stuff posted in the last few pages.

      Teddy

    32. Very nice Crystalinewings ! I love the Elizabethan period, and am hoping to make something from that period at some point too. Maybe "Pocahontas" in her Elizabethan finery would look good on JID Asa or Soa.

    33. Haha, I'm glad I wasn't the only overly-thoughtful child that pondered the probabability of this story (and others)! ;) They look lovely in that array of dupioni silk!

    34. Sounds like a lovely project.

Thanks - At some point I should get around to finishing them (I ran out of time for addingfastenings so they were all sewn into their gowns) and making the last gown (the girl in red velvet is in a Houpellande borrrowed from one of my boys).

      Teddy

    35. Omg what absolutely gorgeous dresses! I want to crawl back in my dark medieval cave and never sew anything again! =D Stunning work <3

    36. Alternatively, you couldsew something of the sort for your own dolls and share it with us here.

      Teddy

    37. Haha Teddy, there's a point right there. And I can never be as good if I don't sew, so there :D Amazing beautiful dresses still. Maybe someday I'll post something here as well.

    38. This is something i think I can post here. made the boy outfit like six months ago and the girl outfit like two weeks ago hope you like them ^^

    39. Very pretty! I particularly like her open ruff. And, well, blue is my favorite color. :)

    40. Gulwen, those are just gorgeous, thank you for sharing! I love the laces you chose, and the in-scale pattern on the taffeta.

    41. Very nice! I love the blue taffeta with the black floral design. I've been trying to find something just like that for a special project I have in mind, but have not had any luck. If you don't mind me asking, I'm wondering if you bought that fabric recently, and if so, where?

    42. I gound the fabric a while ago in a silk store in stockholm. Last tile i whas there they still had it.

    43. Thanks, but that's a bit out of the way for me. I think I'm just going to have to make do with one of several other fabrics I bought for that project.

I'm currently working on three little Italian Renaissance-inspired dresses for my BIDs. I've been taking a series of photos for "special days", and there's one coming up next week that I'd really like some period-appropriate costumes for. Hopefully I'll get them all done in time.

    44. Have you been to the silk mill and museum?:
      http://www.stockholmmuseum.com/museums/manufacturing/almgrens-sidenvaveri-museum35.htm

      I remember visiting it on a trip to Stockholm when I was staying with friends in Uppsala about 13 years ago - and walking through an exhibition of reproduction silk velvets and brocades, woven on the old looms to ancient patterns, where they let you handle the lengths of silk - it was fabric-junkie heaven.... but my spoilsport friends refused to create a diversion while I slipped a few of the lengths of silk into my bag....{grump!!}

Good luck getting them finished in time then

      Teddy

    45. meant to post this over a month ago.
AKA and her man Cuar at a local meet.
her outfit is finally finished. I need to get it out and take better photos.

    46. Oooooh! {applause} Impressive.

      Teddy

    47. Great outfits!

    48. They look wonderful, and yes, they definitely deserve an outdoor photo-shoot.

    49. @PamSD: those are INCREDIBLE! Wow!

    50. Crystalinwings

Your ruff is awesome. You Martha and Pam are queens of the period costumes

    51. Wow PamSD!!! Those outfits are fantastic!!!!! I agree with MB Lilac, those outfits are well deserving of more photos!! If you do end up taking more photos, could you post them or a link to them here? I would love to see them!! :D

    52. I have been working hard on getting some parts done for my Queen Elizabeth 1 when she gets here. I am making David an outfit as well to match the period.

Here is the ruff, hoop skirt, wig i made from human hair so i can style it easier and underskirt front pannel for Elizabeth's gown, And progress on Davids outfit. I plan to add sleves and a half cloak to Davids outfit still and a station circlet around his shoulders and some beads and maybe a broach or 2 to make him look more wealthy.

      [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

    53. Teddy: no i havent been there but i must go ^^

      Pam SD: that looks grate!

    54. It's looking good - lovely details. I am in love with David's shit and blackworked shirt.

      Teddy

    55. Looking good! I love the underskirt and all the blackwork.

I'm currently working on three tiny Italian Renaissance-inspired outfits for my BIDs. I think the hardest part is choosing the fabric combinations....

    56. Omg those are so pretty! I love the color choices. I so love the renaissance era. I look forward to seeing them done.

    57. Crystalinewings: That looks so good!! Forgive my foolish question, where did you get the human hair? Is it yours?I absolutelylove the details on the skirt and the man's shirt!
MB Lilac: Wow, I would never have though to use those colors together, but they look sooooo good! My favorite dress is the orange and brown one on the right. I can't wait to see the finished dresses.

    58. MB Lilac: Those look beautiful! I already love the middle one, I can't wait to see them finished.

    59. I bought wefts off etsy. Anywhere i look there pretty expensive but sometimes i see a deal on etsy for some. I paid about 60$ for the hair.

    60. Crystalinewings: That man's outfit is outstanding!
