Fantasy bodies and human bodies

Sep 15, 2024

?
You may select up to 2 choices.
    1. Question and poll: do you have a human body for your fantasy body (centaur, mermaid, other) BJD?

If so, what do you do with the "extra" body? Do you have another head for it? Do you keep it packed away for picture time?

I have Dollmore Mystic Doll Glass Sea Mermaid White Tara, and I have a Judith body (Tara's matching human body). Can't decide what to do with the body - stick another head on it, or just sort of stow it until I want to swap.

Would love to hear what you do.

    2. I think it mainly depends of the character that will use that particular doll model.

If they have the ability to become both human/'fantastic being', I will purchase the human lower parts if it is available. I am also looking this option for the Gem of Doll Pisces mermaids I am interested in getting. :3nodding:

I wish I could own extra bodies but I currently have floating heads that need a body lol

    3. Another body could be a whole 'nother doll, so I don't have Human-form Bodies.

    4. I voted for secret 3rd option, because my fantasy character will be a doll is still fairly humanoid, so another body isn't really necessary for them. His tiefling hooves and tail are part of his design and it'd be weird to have him without them, although i do tend to go for artist's choice between giving him digitigrade and human legs when getting artwork done of him. I just tend to think of him having hooves in my mind more.

    5. I went for secret 3rd option, cause most of my dolls that have fantasy parts have optional human parts (like swappable legs in one case) so it’s not a full spare body, but there are spare bits involved.

    6. All of my fantasy parts dolls came with human parts so I went with the secret option.

    7. So what I'm hearing is - I should stick to Fairyland Fairyline bodies, lol.

    8. I only have few fantasy dolls, but none of them can change into a human form, so no need for extra bodies.
Come to think of it, with one exception, non of their heads are made to fit a human body, the angle of the neck is all wrong for that.

I like it when a fantasy doll is allowed to have it's fully sculpted fantasy form. Posture and proportions are just as important as the face, to me.
With the exception of elfs and vampires that are basicly just humans with pointier bits, I don't love it when a creature that is supposed to be it's own thing is just a human with a few add-ons.
For human/animal mix creatures such as centaurs and satyrs it's case by case for me. The parts do still need to be sculptes so that they make sense together and the body still needs to work. If a doll maker has the skills it takes to make some of the parts interchangeable, all the more power to them, but too often it's just their regular human torso stuck on an animal lower body with very limited enginering, clunky posing and wierd balance and proportions. If there are animal parts, they need to be able to move in a way that makes sense for the creature in question and they need to be able to carry the weight of the doll in poses that looks natural.

    9. My secret third option is that my fantasy doll has human options. Or, rather, I would like to have fantasy option for my doll that is clearly engineered to have them, but they don't exist!

Why yes, I own a FeePle65. How could you tell...?

    10. My doll grouping exists in an imaginary fantasy-verse, where anything and everything is welcome regardless of size and species. (Think something akin to a Tim Burton’s Alice world.) So no, I simply don’t feel the need to make one of my fantasy creatures occasionally human (I already have plenty of human and quasi-human sculpts to fulfill those roles.) Once I’ve fully developed their characters, my dolls become solidified enough in my mind that I never want to alter them beyond normal wig and wardrobe changes. But keep in mind that after nearly two decades in this hobby, my collection is rather large. I can certainly see the benefit to having a fantasy doll swap out to human on occasion to give a more limited collection added diversity without increasing the numbers. Or if being a shape-shifter is part of their character, then it also makes perfect sense. In my multi-varied collection, I chose to express my few shape-shifting characters simply by keeping them human except for their animal ears…but this is just me, you do you!:)

    11. I did buy an alternate human head that was supposed to be the human version of my weasel boy (with the intention of just switching out the heads occasionally)...but then he ended up deciding he wanted his own body and a completely separate character so....that didn't work out how I intended xD

    12. I voted the third option, because whenever I get a fantasy doll, I always get it with the human body. :XD:
I guess I am light fantasy only. I do have a weakness for cute fox ears though. :aheartbea

    13. 3rd option I guess for a handful of characters/dolls. Ok so first I own a few FairyLand fairy-line dolls with changeable mermaid tails and human legs. So can be human or merfolk, but that is not a whole extra body.

Then I have a small few characters shelled where the character has two forms and so has two full dolls vs a floating body/head. My best two examples of this are my O.C. character Kyle, and my favorite Marvel character J2 (no points lost if you have to google J2)

Starting with Kyle, he is an Iplehouse vampire Chris YID in gray skin, but also a normal skin SID vampire Chris. As a character Kyle is a vampire with a more powered up form, and that form has gray skin. When I got him I planned to only shell his Alpha form, later got is normal form as felt I needed both versions.

With shelling the character of J2 I planned for two dolls as the character has normal not powered form and a superhero form. So J2/Zane's normal self is a DZ Grey, and his hero form is a Granado Doll Nico Titan because the son of the Juggernaut needed to have a massive hero form. (I'm still working out J2's hero costume, but Zane's normal form is a 100% complete.)

    14. 1st option. She came with human feet, but it's rather complicated to change (have to restring the lower body) so maybe she will stay in her fantasy feet forever.

    15. None of my fantasy body doll s have an extra human body. They are fantasy characters, so that's the body they should have. I have plenty with human bodies, so I like the variation of the few dolls with fantasy bodies. Yes, they are more challenging to dress, but that's part of the fun of having a doll with bird wings, or a full on dragon human hybrid body, with wings, tail, and feet.
