    2. Wheee! Morgaine and Vanye are first page, first up! Yippppeeee!

This is Morgaine...with her opened eyes opened a bit farther in, and her companion, Vanye, who began life as a Rou SP. Morgaine is pretty much finished, but for the final sanding and refining the eyeholes when I get my hands on an eye beveler, and Vanye definitely needs a more sanding, but his earnest self is beginning to come through nicely! I'm sooo pleased (she says modestly)! I headed into this with absolutely no expectations, ready to lose both faces, and really couldn't be happier.

MadamMauMau...I really love that wig! As for your question regarding the part problem...I can think of a couple of interesting options. You might actually try pulling tiny clumps of the hairs through the cap using a large needle, and if you pulled the end to the opposite side underneath and glued it, it seems to me that that would allow it to lie flat but in the right direction. i.e. you'd end up with criss-crossed bits of hair underneath. Or, using the cut method you mentioned...maybe make the hair a little thicker? Or actually stitch the two halves back together? If you made the wig cap just a little long on either side, maybe that would work. You could certainly trim that seam back to next to nothing. Mind you, I've tried none of these! :D

    3. Those are interesting ideas, Vindalootoo, and I will give them some thought. The wig caps are effectively thin plastic (dried PVA on a support) so the threading ideas might not work. Hair should be arriving today so I will feedback.

And those are looking good. Just needs a little smoothing.

    4. yay for a new thread! everyone has been posting such wonderful photos and the creativity of everyone with mods and wigs and faceups is amazing! it's been a while, but here's some spam of my lishe, dante.

    5. *Waves at Fen*

She is so pretty. What is that intriguing chaise she is reclining on? Is it 1:5 scale? I have felt the need for some in scale furniture for my Clines. A throne. That is my unattainable grail, but nice chaise would be useful.

    6. *waves back* thanks mau! she is on a 1/4-ish scale couch. having one or two pieces of in-scale furniture is nice for photoshoots!

    7. That is soo nice, and looks familiar, so I have definitely passed those on my internet shopping travels, but couldn't have needed anything on that scale at the time. Now, I just have to remember where...

    8. It's very long time I didn't play with my C-Line Ineffa. Recently, I re-faceup her sleeping faceplate for Halloween meetup this month. Luckily, she turned out so good for me.

    9. Front page spam!!! I don't think I've ever made it in time on any thread lol. Fenris, that chaise is amazing! Wickfoxy, what a great photo of your girl!

    10. !!! I hadn't even thought of using SparrowsShop horns on my ChicLines! I've been focusing on my smaller FairyLands and had practically forgotten they even HAD magnets there! My C-Lines need faces most of all, though.

Your Chloe is mesmerizing, xhanthi! I like the little Nightmare wolf creature she seems to have taken for a pet. ;)

    11. xhanthi, oh, excelent girl! I see the real witch of dark forest))

    12. Wow, a new thread and I haven't been here in ages. A perfect moment for a little spam, so here's my Chloe:

    13. Great Chloes, AnnieStar and xhanthi! Chloe is always beautiful sculpt, no matter what line she's from. However, I haven't seen many good pictures of her, except from you guys.

      @
AnnieStar: I think you almost have the whole C-line dolls ^^

    14. Some stunners on the first page. What a good start to the thread.

AnnieStar, where is that gorgeous dress from?

And we were talking about Franklin Mint clothes in the previous thread and some kind soul (sorry, my memory for names is appalling) said that they had some from Gone with the Wind. I am flirting furiously with the mourning dress from there but, ye gods, so much money. Anyone got a picture of any Franklin Scarlett dresses on, so I can see the fit?

    15. MadamMauMau
Please, dear)) This Scarlett's dress fits for my Clemence ideally (the line of bust, waist and the length of dress)

    16. Wow, thanks for that quick response, Estvin. That looks to be a perfect fit. What size boobehs does your doll have?

    17. Wickfoxy, thank you! Chloe is by far my favourite sculpt and I have her in many sizes: CL, MNF, F60 & F65, only missing LTF. Hah, yes I have most of the C-line dolls, only 3 missing: Soo, El & Ital. I just can't help it, these doll are so gorgeous that I just simply can't settle for only one of the them. :D

MadamMauMau, the dress is from Chloe's full package "Bride of darkness", just without the veil, the head ornament/crown & jewelry.

    18. thanks xhanthi! everyone has such beautiful dolls! i hit a jackpot this weekend with action figure items and so now my c-lines have sooo many new props to play with. :) best of all was the find of some lace up combat boots - now dante has the shoes i never thought i'd find for her!

    19. Here's more spam, I finally managed to take few proper pictures of my Lishe:

    20. MadamMauMau I not sure that I understood your question right)) If you had asked me about size of bust - my doll has a large size (sorry for my bad English)

    21. Ah, yes. Using the term "boobehs" probably didn't help there. XD Anyway, thanks you to your very useful input, I ordered the dress which, if it fits, will be absolutely perfect for my Ino. She is large bust too. I will post a picture in the "What fits" thread when it arrives.

    22. Vanye got a new sweater tonight! First I've made for him. What would we do without cool socks!

      • x 1
    23. Eek, that sweater is ADORABLE! :D Oh dear, now I'm so tempted to see if I can find Christmas themed socks and make all my crew embarrassing Christmas sweaters. It would be awesome. :D

    24. Loving all the spam :D

My Ruru got his flowergirl kimono yesterday and I finally felt inspired to take out my BJDs for a quick picture again

    25. That is a great kimono. The fabric looks very well chosen for scale and drape, two things that I am obsessively fussy about.

And, yes, embarrassing, Christmas-themed sweaters! What a good idea. Is there a tut for turning socks into sweaters?

    26. Yay for cool socks! He looks very festive and very warm, Vindalootoo. I've been eyeing off some kawaii socks in Daiso, but nothing has jumped out at me yet. ^_^

Warm patterned sweaters are in now, apparently, thanks to Sarah Lund from the (Danish) The Killing. I'm sure Avery would accept one for Christmas with a smile were it to amuse me to make him one.

    27. Patterned sweaters are always in as far as I'm concerned! :D

MadamMauMau: don't know of any. I was just told you could do it. This is a link to my "freebies" page with a very basic scale pattern and how I made this. The only tricksy part is attaching the sleeves. Because you use the tube rather than open sides, you can't leave the side open, attach the sleeve, then sew the sleeve and side seam at the same time. You could probably do it on a machine, but I just did it by hand while sitting on me rump in front of the TV! :D

Oh...to make the capped sleeve, I just made the top of the sleeve out of the patterned sock and the bottom of a plain black. Just divide the sleeve pattern at the appropriate spot and add a couple of mm for the seam. (Because I'm hand-stitching, the seams are only about 3-4mm.)

I'll try to put a tute together for the next one to actually show how I attached the sleeves.

The tube is too large for the female CLine, so you have open sides and can do it on the machine. Have one cut for Morgaine. I'll try to remember to take pics.

The freebies page with the pattern: http://www.janefancher.com/HarmoniesOfTheNet/fun-free-stuff/patterns/

    29. Thanks, dhawktx. And that first one is an embarrassing Christmas jumper. Perfect! Now, who to humiliate with it...

    30. Wonderful photos and crafty ideas everyone! It's nice to see the CL discussion threads active like this. (:

Question for those who make hard-cap wigs; has anyone tried fabric glue and does it work on synthetic hair?
I'm thinking gluing hair has to be a lot easier than making wefts so I want to give that a try but I am not sure
what type of glue to use. It definitely has to be heat and water proof yet non-toxic but I'm not sure such thing exist in the glue-world. DX

    31. Ooh, thanks for the tutorial links, dhawktx! I know what all MY dolls will be getting for Christmas! :D Now I just have to find socks in the right scale... I do hope I can find some with snowflakes like yours Vindalootoo, they look fantastic!

    32. Thanks! Making the sleeves completely out of the same stuff was just...too much. (googlie eyes)

And thanks for the links. The first is the closest to what I did, altho because of how I wanted the pattern, the collar had to be done separately. I did one for Pook like this, tho! Out of Vanye's leftovers. Altho the neck was the little checkerboard pattern. I do think because of the manly chest, if you don't shape the sleeve hole a bit, you'll get a less than satisfying pucker

Thank you! I loved the way it came out. Morgaine is going to get one, too. (Probably Wiishu as well. I think I can squeeze two out of the other sock.) I got these on EBay at the end of the season last year. Not seeing anything comparable yet, but that's where I'd check.

    33. Enzyme, I use PVA for the wig cap and then fabric glue for the hair. It dries very quickly which means you can finish one row and then go straight on to the next. I can cover a 1:5 wig in about an hour. It can be stringy, so I have developed a deft hand twist and whisk movement, or I believe you can put Vaseline on the nozzle and that prevents strings. I would imagine it works just as well for synthetic hair as for real.

I would be interested to hear your experiences on wig making, as I am running aground a bit here. My main problem is the parting. I used the slit parting method initially and it caused the top of the wig to bulk out and distort the wig cap. I also found it almost impossible to stick the sides of the parting back together again, because of how small everything is. Then I tried just sticking the hair on up to the parting line, and that, of course, leaves glue splodges and bald spots. I also have an issue with mohair. My suri alpaca hair worked great. It hangs well and looks natural. My angora mohair, however, just sits there. It doesn't curl but crinkles, in spite of being damped down and conditioned.

So, I am pausing in my experiments until I think of what to try next.

Here are some awful, quick pics of the wigs, just so you an see what is happening. Any hints and tips would be gratefully received. His is suri Alpaca with the cut parting method. Hers is angora mohair with the stick it down and hope for the best method. The rubber band you can see at her hairline isn't part of the wig. XD

    34. I've only made a few wigs myself but all of them so far have been with wefts (and a few more
awful one with faux-fur and yarn). The very first ones I used premade wefts but I find them too
bulky and thick for my taste when it comes to the smaller dolls/heads, so I started making
my own wefts. It's pretty easy but time consuming and can get frustrating if you are like me
      and don't like wasting hair (in other words making wefts with short hair!). ^ ^;;

The best way to make a part-line that I have found so far is to sew two wefts on the opposite
side of each other right next to one another, so that the hair is in between both were the hair is attached
to the wefts. Then sew them together right under where the hair is attached to the weft, not the cap.
I don't know if that makes sense? I am not sure how you would do that when gluing hair though,
maybe by making a weft, one that is glued together instead of sewn? DX
My part-lines before I didn't do that last step were bulky but my latest one is flat,
it would be even flatter if my wefts were thinner but I'm not very good at making them (yet).

To me it seems that you get more control of how much hair you add to a wig by gluing it
so that's why I want to try it even if I still have to make wefts. Now that I know that fabric
glue works I will give it a try. Thank you very much for your input MadamMauMau! (:

      - Enzyme

    35. Yeah, bulk is the whole thing with wigs on this scale. That looks like a pretty flat parting. I want the lowest crown I can with the styles I am doing. The whole reason for having a go at hard cap wigs was because all of the premade ones looked bulky. However, even one more thin layer of hair seems to be enough to make the wig look like a helmet. I am therefore a bit wary of adding anything else to the crown, such as sewing or whatever is being used to attach the hair to the wefting band. I could do it with my Ino's hair, I guess, as she can afford to be a bit wild, but my Rou needs something minimal.

I would be very interested to see how you go with these and your experiences of it. It is not as difficult as I thought it would be, but I need some more ideas for how to improve.

    36. Ah. I begin to understand your reservations about both wigs...because I think they look fabulous! Loving his, frankly. And hers...sheesh...there's a really famous, medieval-esque 19th C painting that she looks just like! That kind of curly hair just does that. I honestly have no suggestions...other than keep posting pics cuz I'm loving the spam! :D

    37. Ha! LOL. I think I have ridiculously high standards! There is sooo much wrong with these and it is those bits I want to sort out. I think, if I spent some time futzing them (which I didn't for those shapshots. Straight on head and straight in front of camera), they could probably be OK, but I want them PERFECT! Look at his parting! From the side, it sticks up on top. From the top, still glue spots and the parting gapes as I couldn't be bothered to sew it as I had abandoned it by that point. And the front edge... Just don't look at that cut bit of wig cap sticking out. But I am getting better at making them, so I know I could do it, just not 100% sure how atm.

I was going for Elizabeth Siddal with the hair, PreRaphaelite muse. I wonder if that is who you were thinking of. She is in a huge number of paintings.

    38. Why, you buy enough socks so EVERYONE has one and can wear it for the Traditional Christmas Family Photo!!!!

Then watch your back for a few weeks at least!

Some of it may simply be the nature of the fibers - some mohair is Pre-Raphaelite wavy and some is just...frizzy. One thing you HAVE to do to keep the wavy look is to handle the locks very carefully - keep them together as much as you can and when you use them, use a heavy needle to help split the lock before separating the pieces. That way the hairs that have grown together to form the lock stay together. The other thing is, when you condition it, scrunch the heck out of it! Then shake it out, then scrunch - don't comb. Repeat until the locks form up again.

If all else fails, try a gel thinned with water and braid it into multiple braids all around the head. Undo the braids after it dries and give it a shake but otherwise leave it be.

    39. I will certainly try the glued method as it sounds a lot simpler than making wefts (at least sounds less messy!).
Surprisingly enough the extra stitching didn't add much bulk to the part line but then synthetic hair has to be
heat-treated in order to style short hair so maybe that's the reason it looks flat (because of the heat) and not because I sewed
the wefts together at the end? If I make a new wig for my Rou using glue I will definitely post my experience with it, I hope it goes well. (:

      - Enzyme

    40. I totally love reading all that discussion regarding wig making - I'm too chicken to attempt it myself (I can reroot dolls with Nylon or Saran just fine but wig making with Alpaca would be too tricky)!

    41. I hear you re: perfectionist. I am myself when I'm working on something. Tend to microfocus. I'm just saying these probably look a lot better than you think, because you are microfocussing. OTOH, if you're like me, once you notice it, you'll see it every time you look, so I look forward to your future attempts for these two.

Not the painting I was thinking of, but I'm pretty sure it was PreRaphaelite. But it was more the massive wavy, just a bit wild look...a lot like your wig. :D Darn it. I'm going to have to go hunting for it. (Altho looking at her, I bet you're right. Whatever pic is niggling my hindbrain, I bet it was her. What an amazing head of hair. And so many PR paintings have that mass of curly red....

OTOH, all my kids tend to have the wild and crazy look, whether it's fur or mohair. :D Sleek and elegant aren't really on the agenda for any of them. So what do I know?

    42. Enzyme, I would love to see your attempts. I knew there would be a lot of trial and error in this as others warned me, so I prepared myself for things not being 100% straight away.

dhawktx, thanks for those. I have tried most of that, unfortunately. I have been making on pelt wigs for a few years and have found those a lot easier to curl and tame than these. I really don't want to return to buying fur on the pelt. It defeats one of the main advantages of hard cap wigs, which is the continuing existance of a happy goat.

Vindalootoo, I think it must be her you are thinking of, as it is the right era. As I say, there are lots of paintings with her as the model. eg

      http://preraphaelitesisterhood.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/bocca.jpg

      http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cc/Regina-cordium-1860.jpg

      http://ophelizzie.blog.lemonde.fr/files/2010/03/aurelia.1268153945.jpg

etc etc. I would have done Mabs faceup to look like her but, frankly, I was just pleased to get the pastel on in the right places. I might have another go, seeing as I have now done a few 1:5 faceups.

Roterwolkenvogel, it is honestly not as difficult as it seems. But it is very daunting to make a first start. Took me months to pluck up the courage as I thought it would take hours for each wig. It doesn't. If anyone else wants to try this, we could take the conversation over to one of the wig making threads and have a group go, or set up a new wig challenge thread. Those who have already tried it can give pointers and I would think it would help to have the moral support. Any interested, say "Aye!".

    43. I would love to joint a wig challenge thread but I procrastinate and don't have the right hair to make my Rou a new wig (yet).
It would be fun to see the wigs others make however. It's always inspirational to see step by step WIP too, I hope there
      are people in it. (:

      - Enzyme

    44. Well, let's see. I suggested it as it seems I am not the only one who was daunted by the prospect of it and could have done with a bit of hand holding. I would propose that people are given time to collect materials, as no one is going to have them kicking about at home, so can we count you in?

    45. I don't do challenges or swaps or other such things - I find them to be too stressful. But a WIP thread dedicated to making hardcap wigs for the CLines would be interesting and valuable.

    46. I'm with you on that one! I have gotten a bit addicted to the PR challenges and don't really want to add another "must do" but a dedicated help and encouragement thread w/b great.

Meantime...because we all need a giggle: I'm tormenting Morgaine. Her sweater and pants are next up on the todo list. This means I need to have her available for fittings. I used the pants she'd swiped from Vanye to make her pants pattern, and the shirt from Vanye's musketeer outfit is almost as futsy to put on and take off as her red dress is...so I took one of my fuzzy socks and cut it up for an instant outfit. I think it's kinda cute in a weird, fuzzy, purple-people-eater kinda way. M is...completely disgusted!

Oh...the hood is because I also have her tibetan wool wig downstairs for resizing...and because the heel was still attached! :D

    47. Vindalotoo that is one amazing fluffy outfit right here xD

Meanwhile I got my coat from Nezumitoo in and was finally able to give Khaled, my L-Line Breakaway, the outfit that I imagined for him (it's pretty gorgeous all over)

    48. I would love to say yes but I've been searching for monofiber hair for the past year and a half or so
and still haven't found any reliable place that carries any. I doubt I'll find some any time soon.
The WIP idea sounds good as well though, since people could just add progress steps at their own pace
and there would be no need for anyone to rush anything. Moreover, there would be place to ask and comment
about how to make the wigs without bombarding the CL discussion thread with questions about them.
Regardless of which one you decide to go with, I hope others can join in. (:

That is one STUNNING outfit. Wow. It that trim or actual embellished fabric? Either way...I want some! :D
And the breakaway is quite stunning on that body. Like it much better than on the LTF body.

    51. Vindalootoo the coat was made out of real sari fabric so it's actually embellished fabric :3 I als vastly prefer the L-Line heads on the C-Line body instead of on a LTF one.

    52. Can you not use normal monofibre for that? Those are all over the place, usually hairdressing supplies shops (eg http://www.domehairproducts.com/home.php?cat=249. Enough in a £18.40 packet to make six CLine wigs!)). Or is it some very particular type of monofibre you are after?

A friend of mine just showed me a hard cap wig she made from Tencel. Works very well and is soooo cheap. Not suggesting you use that, as it is pretty brittle, but just thought I should throw it out there if someone is looking for a cheap fibre to make a first wig from.

OK, well, I will start a new thread for wigs for tiny heads, then. I will need to get some more materials myself as I have run out of granny tights. I will post when I have some stuff to demonstrate with.

    53. I had started working on making some wigs for my CL as well last month, but I've come to a bit of a stand-still because I think I might've been a bit too ambitious (bangs + layered). I saw one tutorial awhile back where the person used dried baby wipes as it soaks up the glue and it doesn't tear. I thought I'd try that, but felt completely embarressed standing in the baby section of my local supermarket, so I fled to the tissue section and found some non-alcoholic hand wipes. 30pk for $3.50 or so. One of those hand wipes can do a chicline head (I think if I became more efficent in how I layer it, I might get down to 1 towel for 2 CL heads). I left the towels out on the table to dry out before I used them, then I cut them into rectangles and then glued/layered them on top of each other around the head and painted the tacky glue all over. It did a wonderful job! I "painted" the glue on with a crappy $2 paint brush because I didn't want to get my hands covered in sticky. Piling on the glue seemed to help harden the cap as well.

I've been using Saran (barbie) hair I bought from Dollmore a few years ago and it works pretty well. I skipped some of the hair layers so it looks rather thin (silly me) and now that I'm close to the top, I'm at a bit of a loss at what to do. I think it would look really awesome if I took the time to do it correctly :) The hair itself is fairly inexpensive, but the shipping is killer, so I should find a cheaper alternative to practise with first maybe...

    54. Anistasiya I buy my Saran hair from mylittlecustoms who has fairly inexpensive shipping (and even free shipping once you reach a certain amount) and the hair is of awesome quality (+ a wide range of colors) - I'd also love to see the wig you did with Saran :3

    55. OK. Well, this is all pushing me to start this thread. The wig caps I have down pat. I use a double layer of tights and it works perfectly. No need to change it (and, as I say, I am a COMPLETE perfectionist malcontent). I do know otehrs use the wipe method for larger caps, and I think I will try that for when I move onto SDs. I would be a bit concerned about their bulk on this scale.

I can also do the body of the hair fine. No problems there. But, like you, the top. Oh, the top. I can do two different types of parting, but neither satisfies my outrageously high standards. So, yes, if we can all suffer together and share experiences, that would be great. I will go off and search for yet more tutorials (I think I might have read every one published on the internet) as it is possible to make perfect partings on this sized doll, as the fashion doll wig makers do it all the time. I just need to know how.

ETA: Right, I have added an ammended version of the tutorial I did for teh London group, emphaising small heads. I will add photos in the next couple of weeks as I need to get some more materials in. But have a look around and we can transfer the wig discussions to over there. Saves clogging up this thread.

    56. MadamMauMau:

That's terrific! Thanks for such a comprehensive start!

dhawktx: where's that video on felting at wig you sent me?

    57. Dhawktx & MadamMauMau, thanks for the links! I'm actually searching for ShapeShifter's "silky" monofiber.
      I've seen some USA based websites that carry it but none seem to care about replying to emails... ^ ^;;
I have regular synthetic hair (a lot of it actually, not in the right color for Rou, of course!) that I could use
for a test wig but I really wanted to try a different type of hair for the sake of research, mostly to judge differences
in bulk and styling (with heat). If I have time and find a place that carries fabric-glue locally I'll might venture into
making a hard-cap wig with the hair I already have even if it's not the right hair color. I remember now did make two hard-cap wigs
once for my Triad Toys Eva using hot-glue and acrylic yarn so Tencel doesn't seem all that weird to me (not a very pretty wig though). (:

    58. Vanye has begun to get a face! Yippee! My first faceup. It's not finished...I'd just started the linework after a day of learning to airbrush, and was beginning to get careless, so decided to leave the finishing work for another day. I apologize for the eye-goop showing. I'm too tired to fix it. And idiot that I am, I didn't have his wig along, so got his brows just a little red, but I"ll be adjusting that. He began life as a sleeping Rou.

    59. Enzyme, I had a look at monofibre when I was researching synthetics for the wigs and there seem to be pros and cons for each of the brands. Is there a particular reason why you want to go with Shapeshifter? Also, will the hair be too coarse, as it is human-scaled?

I like that wig, particularly as it is on 1:6, the thought of which makes my head hurt.

Vindalootoo, great for a first attempt faceup, particularly with an airbrush (I am too chicken to try airbrushes). If you ever redo, you might want to leave more skin bare, so that it doesn't change the colour of the head relative to the body. But I like your subtle palette.

    60. I plan to do the entire body. This IS his color pallette. Has been for 20 years. :D[IMG]
Also...the face is a bit rosier than it's showing in photographs. One reason I quit working on it was to find out how it was photographing, and the camera is picking up the yellow more than it does in RL. It's still yellower, no question, but I'll need to bring up pastel the skin tones.
