I also used acetone to take a face-up off and it ended up smearing white across the face-up and making the top a bit soft for awhile. Thankfully a face-up was able to cover all of this and I was able to forget about it but it was really upsetting at first!
I am about to attempt my first face up, reading this makes me feel a lot less scared, I think I put so much pressure on myself to make it perfect like in the videos I watch. Don't worry I am sure I will come back and tell you all a story of epic failure! ^^ But it's fun, getting to learn. I thought I had bought everything I will need but I have no clue what extender is!
I blushed my male doll cheeks so much he looked like a girl. and he had to be a very manly man. Whoops XD
I sprayed MSC gloss (i keep my gunpla and BJD paints together since theyre just the same) on a doll's face. his nose ended up looking sweaty/oily.
Well, this is a very timely thread. I attempted my first faceup yesterday, and ruined it. It was all going surprisingly well, and then I used too much sealant, or sprayed it too close, and the area around her forehead slid downwards (the head was upside down) and left a noticeable edge, and most importantly, took her eyebrows with it! And of course, I don't have anything to take it off with, and I'm too scared to try nail polish remover, so she's gonna have to stay like that for a while. I expected I'd have to remove my first ever faceup to redo it, but I never expected to have to remove it before I was even finished. Anyway, here she is with her now very surprised expression for your amusement. IMG_6068 by vampyyy, on Flickr
I don't remember which one was my most embarrassing mistake, but when I do a faceup, I end up wiping and redoing it an average of three or four times each.
It took me eight tries on my second doll before I said, "Good enough!" (The first doll I just got a company faceup.) The faceup is not professional, but it'll do until I get up the energy to go through another round. I'm sad that acrylics are not in the cards (my hands shake too much) but hey. The other stupid thing I was doing was I would put on sealant, then do pastels, then be unhappy with the (still-unsealed) pastels, then do a full wipe with Winsor & Newton brush cleaner thing instead of just washing off the pastels! Whoops. It became much less stressy once I figured out that I was doing a lot more full-wiping than I had to! *embarrassed*
