I want to give one of my boys tattoos that look really old. Where the ink looks grayish/blue and slightly blurry. My issue is I'm not sure what materials to use. I was thinking maybe watercolor pencils or watered down acrylics but wasn't sure if that would be the right route. Has anyone done the faded tattoo look before? Thank you in advance!
I first painted mine with watercolor (acrylic should be the same result) in a greenish black for my guys skin tone, then took pastels of the same color and blended into the lines around the tattoo... hope thay makes sense
I draw in pencil, then redraw them in watercolor pencils (brown and deep green if I remember well), erased the pencil, put water on the design to make it less clear, and continued with watercolors. Here is a WIP:
Jumping into this thread as it's something I was thinking of doing too. How you guys get the watercolor of "making water" like those droplets instead of a nice watercolour effect. Would it be possible to do with gouache too?
@OstaraFrost using a blueish charcoal grey colour instead of black would also help if the doll is toward the pinker and paler end of NS resin (or white) as that’s what the blackwork on tattoos fades to on fair skinned people. The green/black suggested by others works too but personally I think it looks better on yellower or darker skin tones so it’s going to depend on your doll’s resin and your own taste really. What ever method you decide to use if the tattoos are meant to be really old I’d be tempted to add a dusting or two of pastel in a shade close to the doll’s resin colour to give it a softer, under the skin look.
