I have a doll thats jet black resin and its difficult to do a faceup on her that shows up at all. I was hoping to see some examples of faceups on black or very very dark resin colors
I don't owen a black resin or dark anned BJD bt i saw fews. Most of the Black Resin BJDs i saw were an White/Silver/Gold Face Up. Reminding on Agyptian Goddes. On dark tanned Resin i often see Black, White and a flashy red for the Lips. But it doesn't look realistic at all. So i think its up to what you wanna do with your Doll
A trick I've used for making pastel show up on dark dolls where the pastel just does not want to work at all, is using white paint as a base. So I paint the eyelid and mouth area with white paint and then apply the pastel in the colour I want, once it's dry. However it's a bit harder to do a natural face-up like that, since you always have the harsh lines of where the paint ends.
Vitta Vera does quite a lot of dark resin faceups- here are two examples of black or very dark grey: Face up Portfolio Face up Portfolio
Forgive me if this sounds dumb, did you ever try sponge or airbrush to help with those edges? It wouldn't give the harsh lines between the white paint and the resin, I'm just unsure how the pastels would work over the gradient area. Any idea how it would work out?
I haven't tried it, because for everything I've done, those harsh lines were fine, I just did a cut crease type of look for the eyes and that hid the line. You could probably use a sponge, but any difference in texture will show up through the pastels, so you've got to be careful to make sure it's reasonably smooth. An airbrush would probably work fine as well, but if you've got an airbrush and the ability to use it that delicately, just airbrush whatever colours you want on. I personally have done some airbrush blushing in the past and would probably need to practice loads more before I could actually put the white where I wanted to put the pastels. But if you've got the control and that's what you wanted to do, I'm sure it would be fine!
My example probably won't help much because all I used was gold acrylic paint, watercolour pencil, and pearl powder. Here's my Soom Ender jackal head.
The biggest issue I face is doing the blushing/contour with pastels, though I wonder, would the doll look better without the blushing perhaps? Everytime I try it just ends up looking quite muddy.
Bumping this up with my own example in hopes of more examples I'm not 100% satisfied with my face-up. I don't have an airbrush, nor the skills for it, so I guess I'm limited to what I can do with this doll. I really loved the work of MissMantis when they were still doing dolls. I've got some metallic paints on order, gonna see what I can do with em
Here’s my black resin girl! Her blushing is done completely in interference mica powder!! Zariel by Indifferent Red, on Flickr
