Hi guys! It’s Cam’s tutorial here. As usual, due to word limit and possible broken images, you can visit my original post on my blog here Face-up Tutorial: Undertone – Cam's Station A few years back, I made a few basic face-up tutorial post here on my blog, and over the years, I have grown and learn more about face-up. With those updated knowledge and skills, I decided that it would be a great idea to revisit those posts and changed a few things about them. Before diving in, I wanted to say thank you so much to my readers and those that reached out to me through DOA saying they want to find the tutorials after I deleted them. Your support and feedback helped me so much with this blog, and is a great source of inspiration for me to continue bringing you better dolly contents. Disclaimer: The doll picture I used in this post is permitted by the owner and/or the doll belongs to me.The doll on the picture in this post is the butterfly standee’s head by Coralreef BJD. Let’s start with undertone. 1.Color theory Color theory of the skin is an important thing to take in consideration when you do your face-up. Same as painting on canvas, the “make up” isn’t done on real skin, thus, creating the base of the surface is the key to bring out more “realistic” face-up, and better dimension to the sculpt. The “skin” you’ll be creating on your doll is a canvas that reflects the underlying existence of what real skin has: veins, fat and muscles. Therefore, the use of these following colors is essential to create a good base: blue, green, yellow, pink/red. Undertone helps you build dimension and depth without having to use brown as contour. 2. Color map Here is the basic – full colors – color map that I use. All together, the result should look somewhat like this: 3. Variation for different style face-ups The full color map is definitely more suitable for a realistic approach to face-up; however, for smaller size dolls, you can use these different maps to create styles +) Sun kissed +)Strawberry girl faceup +) Sickly, pale vibe +) drunk faceup style That’s all for today’s updated post about undertone, I hope this helps you with your face-up journey!!! I’ll catch you guys in my next post sometime soon!!! Thank you for reading.
This is a lovely breakdown! I'm definitely going to reference this next time I get the chance to do a few faceups. Thank you!
It's always very interesting to see how someone else paints their faceup, and the breakdown of the different colours is super helpful! Thank you
