.: Faceup Tutorial by elisa_maza/AngelToast :. (Pastels & Acrylics, 9-2009)

Sep 14, 2009

    1. I love it!

I bookmarked it so I can use it as a guide later.

    2. dollecstasy: Technique pretty much always changes and (I would like to think) improves, with every new faceup. ^^; I try out new stuff all the time.

Ebony Rain: The Artetje brushes are somewhat hard to come by - I got a few here on DoA in the marketplace, but you can look for them on ebay or on art supply sites. I use my 10/0 brushes from the comic store a lot, actually, they work fine if you can't find 100/0's. As for Rembrandt pastels, I bought mine on ebay... I don't remember how much they cost. ^^; If you search for them, you can probably find a good deal there.

      Myuuchan: Hmm... I've found that the quality of the brush hair and the paints and thinner make a huge difference. Cleaning your brush very thouroughly makes a difference too, since they can easily get stiff and mucky from acrylics. I hope this helped. ^^;

    3. really cool, this is a great walktrogh :D

    4. yay doctor who reference and love your tutorial, i'll definitely use it as reference when I go to do some face-ups in the far future. thanks ^-^

    5. You have inspired me! Thank you so much for the visual aid and for sharing your talent!

    6. thank you, very helpful.

    7. I've just discovered your thread and I bookmarked it immediately !! You make such a good job, I'm impressed and I hope that one day I'll be as good as you !

    8. This tutorial is really amazing.

Thank you for making this tutorial.

    9. This'll be useful! I'm going to attempt my first bjd faceup tomorrow, since I went overboard with MSC and had to wipe a full faceup to get it all off... Eugh, gunky MSC :/

    10. this is so useful, thanks for sharing!! she looks wonderful!!

    11. A) This is a terrific tutorial
      B) Squeee!!!! Doctor Who!
      C) Realization that there is someone else in the world that uses "are you my mommy" in a normal everyday conversation other than my mother and myself.

      Thanks!

    12. I have a question! For lip glaze, I don't want it to be SUPER SHINY. I figure putting MSC over the top of it will flatten it out a bit. How much does one coat flatten glaze? 2 coats? Will the gloss still be visible after 2 coats?

    13. nk-chan: I have two different gloss types for lips and eyes, a matte one and a more shiny one. I use them seperately or together depending on the effect I want to achieve.

      A coating of MSC will take the shine away, and in my experience it only takes one coat to completely flatten gloss. Maybe you could play around with a very thin layer of MSC, to see if you can matte the gloss rather than completely obliterate it. ^^;

But matte varnish is readily available in craft stores and such. The one I have settled on is a really cheap one, actually! >.> The brand is Folk Art, and it's just called varnish gloss on the bottle.

      Hope this helped!

    14. Wow that amazing , I try little bit on my boy head the lip i got nothing else i gave on it. I leting someone else do it lol

    15. Thank you, I will look for that brand! :3

    16. Thanks for posting this i really needed it! I'm getting my first can of MSC in a couple of weeks so I need all the help i can get

    17. Your tutorial is certainly making my first face-up much easier, so far. :)

I do have a question though, if yu please: I have a lot of trouble with the upper eyecrease line... (odd thing to get stuck on, I know..)
Can you offer any advice on how to make it easier, or materials other than paint?
      Thanks!

    18. Just bookmarked this thread :) I've read several tutorials on how to do faceups but I think this one will give me the courage I need to actually try it out :D

    19. TheGrey: Is your problem that it's not getting thin enough? All I can tell you is thin your paints a lot, and use a tiny tiny brush. ^^; Some people like to use watercolor pencils for the detail work, and if you sharpen one to a really fine point you could get into the eyelid crase with it as well on many dolls. I hope this helped!

    20. Stupid question, I know, but is it okay to use a watercolor pencil for a guide as to where to put your eyebrows, then paint over that guide?

    21. Yumeko-chan: That should be totally fine, I'm sure many people do that. I'd say just keep the lines light and you'll be ok. Some people use only watercolor pencil for all the details, and not paint. It's pretty much whatever works best for you. :)

    22. Okay, thank you :)

    23. If only we could all learn so easily.
I have such a bad unsteady hand and have too much doubts of ruining and killing my baby >.>
I love everything about this though the eyebrows and lashes are done lovely. Beautiful.

    24. Wow, so wonderfully done! It's a great faceup!

    25. Yeah, you definitely inspired me to paint my own doll <3

    34. Thank you for posting this tutorial! I am looking forward to trying to do my very own face-ups, my boyfriend (who also shares in the bjd obsession) got a doll long ago from a girl who did her own face-up and it wasn't exactly... amazing... so he told me if I wanted I could wipe it and use the head to experiment on myself. I can't wait to try... this will be such a nice helpful tool for me to use along the way, again, thank you! :)

    37. I've been sitting here drooling over your face-ups and wishing I had enough money to commission you... and then I find this. You are my hero. (Depending on how it goes, I may commission you anyway once I get my new girl in.)

    38. I haven't attempted a face-up yet, but I'm preparing for one soon now that I have a practice head :)

    42. This tutorial was so inspiring to me; I seriously want to face-up my own doll now! Unfortunately, as soon as I told my mom I would be needing a respirator to use MSC, she gave me the disapproving look of death. D:

    50. Great tutorial! Thanks very much! I haven't tried doing my own faceup yet as I'm afraid I might ruin the head, but I guess if I don't start, I'll never know if I'd be any good at it. xD The eyebrows are the thing that scares me most, but this tutorial makes me want to try.

    51. Awesome tutorial! :) I'm a new BJD owner and too scared to do my own faceup. But with this tutorial, I think I'll give it a try and see. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us! :D
