Aesthetics Faceup Critique!

Jun 21, 2018

    1. I've done faceups before, but they were terrible and few photos of them exist. These are the first I've like enough to post a bunch of photos of. Not that they're great, but they are better than before, especially since I finally got some pastels. I finally had the right combination and privacy and time and did them about two weeks ago, but my phone was acting kind of funky and wouldn't let me upload.

The photos wash things out a bit, unfortunately.

I was going for naturalistic, but the colors I chose just feel off. Especially the eyes and eyebrows. I was going for sleep deprived, but it looks like he has two healing bruises. His lips look alright here, but they got wet and look a bit blotchy. Speaking of blotchy, I managed that affect with his cheeks (I was trying to go for that realistic texture), but for some reason, every shade of pink I chose just didn't jive. And his eyebrows are not meant to be flaming orange. I just kept kind of rolling with the mistakes with the reassurance that I would do things over this week, but I still don't know what colors would look right.

This was supposed to be a naturalistic faceup, but I blushed her cheek too heavily and I couldn't get it off, so I just continued. I was trying to give her this skin condition, but for some reason it never looks right to me. Also, while I like thick eyebrows on her, these ones are a bit much, hairs included. I tried thinning the paint, but I must have messed something up. I like her lips, save the fact that her subtle smile seems to have been disguised a bit though, don't know if I will stick with that color, but I might. And her nose looks kind of cute here. It's just that the red and spots remind me of ladybugs.

I did a bit of blushing on his hands and neck, the latter of which has the unintended but pleasant side effect of disguising his very slight resin mismatch.. Unfortunately, the blotchy effect came out even worse here. And though you can't see it very well, I absolutely botched the sealant on the chest because I was too stubborn to redo it. And the nipples... I just kind of gave up. My pastels didn't look right and made a mess, hence the botching. These nipples can be seen straight through his shirt, which is a bit yikes. Maybe I should water down the paint? I really don't know, especially since his areolae aren't very defined, making it a bit hard to know where to put color down. And I didn't bother with the nails, as I have no gloss.

I think he looks better dressed. And his flaming orange eyebrows match his temp wig. Shame that they are supposed to match the auburn one I am making. He looks so sweet. A little too sweet. Can you believe he is suppose to be a grouch that curses like a sailor? Probably the eyebrow position. Anywho, this should be redone soon (and I might even do the third head I have), so any tips would be helpful. Thanks for reading!

I got my little goblin new bead eyes.

You can't really see it when they are in her head, but they have such a nice shimmery effect, way better than the ones I painted. And she has plenty of spares now.

Now I just need to get her dyed so I can finally customize her. Ooor keep putting it off. Probably that.

    2. Its a great start! But I do see a few things you could easily work on in your next faceups. I would definitely recommend lowering the eyebrows, currently you've placed them more on the forehead than on the brow bone. I used to have the same problem so I'd definitely recommend looking at reference photos of real people while doing your faceups.
Your freckles also look rather regular and not so natural. I like watering down watercolors in a mellow brown and using a stiff bristle brush and a paper towel to splatter the freckles on, but then lighten the darkest ones. It gets a lovely natural effect, and the watercolor comes off easy if you make a mistake.
For tired eyes I'd recommend more blue purple shades- it looks like you went more blue green, which is why you ended up with the bruise effect.
I do think though that these faceups are feeling "off" to you because you haven't painted details around the eyes. Even for a no makeup natural look you'll want to paint the waterlines (I like using the same warm mid brown I used for freckles) and add a slightly darker pastel to the lid- think about how your lashes make around your eyes look darker, and how the thin skin of your eyelids looks different from the rest of the skin on your face. You'd be surprised at what a major difference that will make on these faces :)
Also! The nipples! I don't like to paint them on cause you often end up with really stark and dramatic ones like that- I recommend building up pastels in multiple layers (use an eraser to keep the shape correct) and you'll end up with a much more subtle and natural look.
Overall you've made a great start, I hope this critique/tips helps!

    3. Thanks for the critique! Hmm, I had a mix of splatter and brushed on freckles on his face, I guess I'll do just splatter. I'll keep all this stuff in mind, especially the eye details and eyebrows, I didn't even notice.

    4. Oh u did great just fyi! :"D

Two things come to mind- Nipples and lips should probably be approximately the same colour, i think? It might be different in people who have more melanin and stuff, but in pale people that seems to be the norm. And also with DPN, maybe you could use glue or a medium to make the lesions appear more 3d? I dont know about what mediums are resin safe but I think PVA glue is really popular in doll stuff. If you aren't interested in doing that, perhaps some highlights and shadows on the edges of the circles could make them look more 3d :"D

I think the around the eye colours on your pale guy are very cute, but yeah i think there is usually some purple there! Maybe consider bringing up a reference and using it to map out colours and their whereabouts. I have tired eyes right now and I realise theres some green around too so youre totally on the right track.

On google its tough to find good references though because theyre all healthy models with fake makeup though :| So you might have to hunt a bit if you consider that.

    5. Thanks for the nipple thing, I am of a darker skin tone (so everything is just different shades of brown), so I didn't really know how to know what color to use. And yes, I think I'll try glue next time. I have some Mod Podge. At least, I think I brought it.

    6. This might help you with choosing blushing colors for different areas of the face: Gurney Journey: Color Zones of the Face

For tired eyes, use some purple, yellow, and green under the eyes...but with a light touch. There are hints of those colors. You'll still have primarily the base skin tone there.

    7. This was hugely helpful to me, thanks! I’ve been having a lot of trouble picking out where blues and greens show up in faces no matter how many tutorials talk about these subtle undertones.
