Aesthetics Faceup Critique on First BJD

Dec 13, 2017

    1. Hi! This is my first BJD and I would love some constructive criticism on her faceup  I have previously only done faceups on monster high so this was a big change!
This is my DIM Ace head (she will have upper eyelashes once they arrive in the mail)

    7. For a faceup that looks really amazing, it's hard to give any constructive criticism. If you're looking for ways to improve, I guess all I can really suggest is making sure your pencils are very sharp when drawing eyebrows and lashes. Your lines are a little grainy, but that seems to be an issue with dull pencils or the cheaper brands. I don't know what brand of pencil you use, but if it's a cheaper one, I say your work is phenomenal, and you should invest in higher quality materials. It will be so worth it for you!

Keep up the great work! Would love to see any future faceups you do!

    8. Thank you so much omg!

That's so nice of you :kitty2 I use high quality pencils (Derwent and Prisma) but my pencil sharpener is the problem I think! It's really awful lol. I appreciate your feedback thank you so so much!

    10. omg thank you!!! :whee:

    11. She looks really nice! I have to agree that there is not much to critique here, you definitely know what you're doing. ;) Since you specifically asked for it though, I will say that I find her eyebrow hairs a little too uniform, and the eyelashes a little clunky. Getting pencils sharp enough is a challenge- you may want to try using a knife or sandpaper instead of a sharpener. Sometimes you can get an ultra sharp point that way, though you will need to do it a LOT because even one line can dull the point too much. I found it incredibly annoying when I still used pencils, it's part of why I switched to acrylics. Which you may want to look into because acrylics can give you the most beauuuutiful tapered lines, and based on your skills here I think you could figure it out in no time. :D

    12. Thanks so much I appreciate the feedback! I totally agree on the pencil thing. I cant figure out why but I do such great eyelashes with acrylic when it comes to monster high faceups but on resin it always ends up looking so cakey! I think I just need to get a practice head and keep practicing :XD:

    13. oh wow she looks lovely :3

    14. Thanks so much!

    15. She looks really pretty! This is amazing for your first faceup on a bjd.

    16. Thank you :whee:

    17. This face looks great! The eyebrows look a little bit like unfinished but I especially like the eyelashes and lips :3nodding:.

    18. Thank you! I am working to improve on my brows for sure :)

    19. The eyelids are just stunning! Her freckles are a nice touch, too. If I HAD to give you critique (and I’m stretching) some smaller lighter freckles would give her more depth and a softer more natural look.

What did you use for the lids? I can’t get over how luminous they are!

    20. Thanks so much for the advice! I used a base of Golden brand iridescent gold paint then went over that with pearl X powder in gold! Also I glossed the gold parts after finishing the face up and I think that really helped with the luminosity :3nodding:

    21. Very cute!

    22. I really like your faceup. The only improvement I would do is to vary the size of the freckles - make some smaller. Still, what a great job!

    23. I love the lips! <3

    24. Looking at these pictures I thought, "No way this is your first face!" It looks sooo well done. Teach me your secret lol

    25. Thanks so much :D and honestly I think maybe practicing on monster high dolls helped a lot!

    26. This is absolutely beautiful! I have no critique as I’m a newbie in all respects, but I was wondering; how did you get that sort of water-splatter effect in her freckles? I think it’s gorgeous and soft

    27. Thanks so much! I used really watered down acrylic paint and then put in on her face in dots. Then you let the drops sit for like 5 seconds and dab them off with a paper towel :3nodding: Unniedolls on YouTube has a great tutorial on it!

    28. Wow I’m seriously impressed! She looks gorgeous! I don’t think I would have been able to do this even after the tenth time of trying! She is perfect! :)

    29. Thanks so much!! I’ll check it out!

    31. Personally, I feel like the lower lashes are a bit extreme, but she is certainly a lovely girl nonetheless! I really love her freckles!
