Aesthetics Faceup #4

Oct 10, 2017

    1. I redid my first ever faceup just to see how I've improved even though I've only done a few. I think I have the eyebrows down, but I still need practice for the lashes. I just can't seem to get them right no matter what style I try. Any tips? I use watercolor pencils for them.

Since Deyleria is a Blood Elf Death Knight from World of Warcraft, I'm going for an exaggerated fantasy look.

    3. The colours you've chosen fit her skin tone very well! Makes her eyes really pop, which is fitting.

As for eyebrows and lashes - i'd suggest trying paint (acrylic or heavy watercolor) with a very fine brush. (like the brushes you buy for miniature figures). I use this method because one quick flick mimics a faint lash very well and helps look more realistic.
It takes a little longer to layer them that way but the result is great!

    4. Oh wow, she's so lovely! I really love the eyebrows and how realistic the hairs look. The shading around the eyes is really charming too.

    5. You did a very great job ! I love the pointy ears with the black on top of it. The lips also, really great ! I can see so much work on this face-up !

    6. Nice job!!! I think you may be a bit hard on yourself. The lashes don't look that bad. But,
perhaps some thinned acrylic paint or acrylic ink using a very fine brush would give you
the results that you desire. I suggest that you practice strokes on a similar surface, such
as the headcap of the head. I kind of put the tip of the brush down where I want it and give
it a slight flic. It seems to work for me. I also layer lashes. Good luck!!!

    7. I dunno why, but the thought of trying to use paint kinda scares me. I think it's because I have really unsteady hands and if I mess up with pencils just a dab of water will clean it up right away. I've seen some amazing things done with paint, though. I guess I could give it a try next time.

Like I said above, paint intimidates me. It looks like that's gonna be my best option, though. I've never thought about practicing on a headcap before, so thanks for the idea. Luckily, I'll be getting another doll soon so I'll be able to practice more. I'll try it with him and see how it works.

    8. She looks wonderful! Your brows are very good. Nice sharp pencil. Do you use a kneadable eraser? They work amazingly well if you blot them over your lines. I makes them less harsh. Her lips are spot on. Love themโค

Lashes... I thought eyebrows were hard. Grrr... Well I do mine in an exaggerated style. I always pick out really long lashes so I figure the bottoms should match, right? Angle has alot to do with effect. I bring mine down, following the curve of the lower lid. I cross a few, much like your already doing, and layer colors. I then blot with my eraser to soften and clean up my lines. When I have it like I want it, I put just a smidge of dark shadow on top of where my lashes start. Gives them a feel of thickness. Don't worry, paint terrifies most people. I can do killer lip lines on a mouth, but lashes and brows? No way.

Keep at it you've got a great eye and style.

    9. I do use a kneaded eraser, but it's mainly to even up the edges. I never even thought to blot the lines, though. That's a fantastic idea and sounds way more doable at my skill level than paint does at the moment. haha Thank you.

    10. You can wipe paint away just as easy! If you seal layers between work you can just wipe it off. The amount of time i wipe away the current layer if i don't like something can get silly sometimes. But it's never permanent, you don't need to worry ^-^

    11. Wow fantastic work. I love those contrasts.
About the lashes, you defnitly allready have a good eye for where to stop before the inner eyelid, getting them shorter on the way and mixing in some shorter ones, keep this. I don't think you need to switch away from pencil, but I think I have two or three ideas for you, that might help. First you make your lashes meet at the root, I think it turns out better, if they meet at the tip, but that might be personal taste.
Second is your line style, if I see this righ you have lines being the same thickness from root to tip, but lashes get thiner to the tip. To achive this with a pencil you should try holding the pen in round about a 45ยฐ angle to the paper an make really quick lines while lifting the pen up (so you don't end the line by stopping, but by the pen not touching the paper anymore) don't be afraid trying the quick movement. It was hard to belive for me, too, but it helps a lot. I practised this line style on paper before using it in face up, which I found highly recomendable. You will most propably get some lashes to long in the beginning, but you can easily shorten them with your eraser.
And last but not least, I like using more than one color for lashes. That way they turn out more voluminous, without looking undefined. In this case just pick yourself additional two dark grey pens (mabe one going a little into blue, if you want, that might turn out cool, I guess) I recomend starting with the lightest grey and ending with the black pencil you allready used and to use sealant in between.
I hope this can help you :thumbup

    12. Ah, all of this is very helpful information. Thank you!

    13. Oh man wow is like my fave past time. I think you got the feel of your character painted pretty good. I'm curious to see if it's possible to get the real blood elf flying eye brow. I've seen cosplayers use feathers.

    14. Yeah, wow is great. Unfortunately, I don't get to play it that often.

Feathers for the brows? That sounds interesting. I could always try using some of the yarn I used for her wig to make it match, but I'm a little scared of gluing things to her face. haha. Maybe next time, though. It would probably look really good.

    15. She's seriously cool. Makes me regret getting a night-elf in a black rather than grey because I feel like grey is much more versatile for faceups. I think your work is just splendid!! I don't envy you having to try to draw eyebrows on that scale though, it must be difficult.

    16. Gray is pretty good, but I bet your black one is really pretty, too. And thank you.

Also, the brows were definitely harder than working on a bigger head, but it wasn't actually that bad. Lashes are what still eludes me. haha

    17. Oh man her colors are so nice! :D I really like the cold blushing you did on her eyes and ears and actually her eyes are so captivating, that if you didn't mention the eyelashes yourself, I probably wouldn'tve noticed them being a bit off. XD
But as I can tell the lashes are pretty hard, I think you just need to keep redoing them until you are happy with the result. I'd also try how the final look looks without the lower lashes, sometimes you don't even need them to be there, especially if you're going for not-super realistic look. I mean even human lashes are rarely facing down, the lower lashes are pretty much invisible. Of course if you definitely want them in, it's just pure practicing.
Anither trick I know is using multiple colors, not just one black lash color. Mix in some white lashes and other colors you see fit, you're obviously good with colors already. :3nodding: The effect of lighter lashes in the mix softens the look without making them look too massive.

    18. Thanks for the advice. Multiple colors? I could give that a try.

    19. I like the color spectrum of this makeup, but eyebrows are large. (For first attempt is cute!)

    20. Looks so mysterious and beautiful!
Love the glow on her eyes :love

    21. I absolutely love the way that you did her eyebrows, as well as the blushing on the ears! Both look really natural!

    22. The eyebrows are supposed to be big and fluffy. I was actually thinking that they could stand to be a bit thicker.

Thank you. I was trying to make her eyes stand out. I'm glad it worked.

Natural is always a nice thing to hear. haha Thank you.

    23. Oh, that explains it.

    24. I think you did a wonderful job & the colours are good..Ive never done a faceup myself but am I guess an artist so I think if maybe the lower lashes had a bit more curl to them but only slightly that would be good but thats just my opinion & I think everyone gave some great help.:)
