Aesthetics Face-ups from the oldest to the latest

Feb 27, 2014

    1. Hello, everybody! I joined the hobby about a year ago and from the start I knew I wanted to give a try to painting the dolls. I have been doing face-ups since the last summer and I'm very interested to learn to do it better. So, please, take a look and tell me what you think!

      My materials are:
      Army painter anti shine mat varnish
      Rembrandt acrylics and pastels + Conté pastels
      Citadel Technical 'ardcoat
      watercolour pencils ->sketching

      1. Let's start with Fairyland Pukipuki cubid3. This is my own doll and this is its current face-up too. This is the only face-up I did not use acrylics on, since I was intimidated by the tiny size.

      2. Then there is its sleeping plate too. It has the same colour scheme as the normal plate but my Photoshop Fu ain't strong enough.

      3. Next one is Dikadoll Molin, a bigger guy of SD size. It's my practise head without a body of its own. This is my first try on him. I wanted to do a very basic brown based practise on him. As you can see, I'm not quite used to blushing here yet.

      4. This is a bit wilder practise with Molin. I needed to find a style to fit these gorgeous eyelashes.

      5. Aaand some of you might already know this guy. It's Resinsoul Pixiu that I painted for DoA's anniversary contest. Looks a bit mischievous, doesn't it?

      6. The previous face-up was for the contest but this is Pixiu's own face-up. I went with a sweeter look this time.

      Oh, his feet too!

      (continues in the next post)

      7. Dreaming doll Misora is my SO's doll. I got to do practise on it and it got to try being a brunet for a while.

      8. It's Dikadoll Molin again. This time it has a face-up that imitates Zelda from Legend of Zelda Twilight Princes.

      9. This guy is my sister's Dollzone Luke. Pastel colours, pastel colours everywhere.

      10. For now, last but not least my little dear, Dikadoll Blanca hybrid. He looks quite displeased to be last one in the list.

    2. I seriously like the Pixiu legs you did. How did you do it??

      I can see a clear progression of skill through your face ups. I think you are doing great. You pay attention to detail (those teeth must have taken a very steady hand!). The Molin-Zelda really captures the Twilight Princess look.

      The only criticism I can think of if your eyebrows. Some of them are very stark compared to the overall light blushing of the face, like the Misora brunette version. Some the eyebrows also appear a little high. Both these things aren't always bad depending on the look or sculpt (the Zelda has high eyebrows but it looks great), so on your next faceup maybe experiment with different styles and placements of eyebrows.

    3. Oh, now I can see it too! The eyebrowns are just a bit too high! I hadn't even realised before. Hmm, I have to keep working on the colour balance. *nods Thank you for your critique, it was even more helpful than I would have expected!

      Those teeth, yes.... My finger is wider than that mouth... ;v;

      Pixiu's legs were sprayed with Army Painter white base spray. Fairly diluted acrilyc paint, same gray as in Pixiu's resin, was stroked horizontally in a lax manner with a brush. Then the dots were splattered from the brush.
      The talons had the same base white. Fixed a colour similar to human nails and added it irregularly to the sides of the talons to give an illusion of transparency. Strengthened the illusion by adding gloss.

    4. These are amazing. I'm wowed at how good you are and you've only been doing them for 6+ months! That's a lot of talent.

    5. Eep I forgot my crit! I personally think your eyebrows are fine, your color theory needs a bit of work though. Try using contrasting colors to add some pop to your work. I felt that your work was a bit flat. Your brush strokes and shading are really awesome. Your faceups are fantastic but they could be pushed to the next level.

    6. We can see an improvement from then to now. I love Pixiu's sweet faceup. The eyebrows look softer. I'm crushed by the fact that the pixiu contest faceup was wiped. T_T

    7. Thank you for your feedback everybody! It really helps to hear what other people see in the same face-ups!

      D4rk_0rchyd, I grew fond of the lava face-up too but I figured if I ever really wanted to see it again, I could just paint it again from the start and even make it better better according to the experience I gained while painting it the first time. : )
