Aesthetics Face-ups for critique

Jan 22, 2014

    1. I have 4 face-ups for critique...
You don't have to comment about each of them.
I'll number them - so please tell me the number you're writing about. Otherwise I may not know to which one you're writing about.
Everything else I'll write between the pictures.
      Thanks. :)

      1.)
(The eyes are not set in well - but this is abput the face up, not about where he looks. ;) Everything you have to say about the face-up AND/OR about his tattoo is welcomed.)

      2.)
(His eyebrows are different from each other...one is higher than the other. The shape was an experiment. I'm not sure if I like how they came out. But maybe you have Ideas how the same or nearly the same shape can look better?)

      3.)
(This poor guy seems unfinished. But I have no Idea what I can do to 'finish' his face-up without wiping it and making it completely new. Any suggestions?)
      That's him with hair:

      4.)

(His eyebrows could look better in another shape. Hm..nothing more to say. )

Thanks for your answers and suggestions! :D

    2. I love them all, especially 4.. on 3 though. you said he seems unfinished.. maybe add a little color on his lids? I really do think he looks good though with the wig on. he looks less unfinished. Great job on all 4!!

    3. Hi Schattenwolle

I'd like to do a little critique, heh. It's cool that you are taking a lot of initiative on this!

Let's do Photo number 2. I wholly recommend you gather a number of pictures of eyebrows. Both female and male eyebrows, sexy ones, cute ones, bushy , plucked, lots of diversity. Just practice drawing people's faces from real life while paying attention to how unique people's eye brows grow with the lines of each hair. Draw them on paper or anything. Practice, practice, practice. Practice life drawing improves anyone's drawing skills slowly but immensely. Get familiarized with the anatomy of the eyebrows (and the eyes too). That way, once you are able to build a foundation of anatomy you can get a better sense as to what you want for the stylized eyebrows. It's hard for me to pinpoint what can be improved for the eyebrows without having X-men powers to pour what I am thinking into your mind :P

I'm a firm believer that learning to draw anatomy is necessary to draw all other styles.

The eye crease thing on her eye lids needs more refinement. I think that requires painting finer and sharper lines on the resin but, of course, you'll get better at it as you do more face ups :) Once you perfect making that crisp dark line for eye crease thing, maybe add a little blushing to it that acts like a shadow that light can't reach too. On the bottom right pic of Photo 2, I notice the black line crease was shiny. Since, in real life, there is shadow because light can't hit it, you should try to avoid adding gloss on the eye crease when you do the eye lids since it's only possible for something to be shiny if it is exposed to light.

What beautiful sculpt lips. Optionally, you can blush inside the lips too, to add more contrast between the lower and upper lips. Tho it might not be necessary since you probably will not photograph the doll in that angle usually.

Actually, looking at the other pics, you have a lot of skills with lines and shape built up already. Your tattoo looks great!

I hope that didn't sound rude. I wish you good luck and to continue having fun!

    4. I love the way you've done it^^ the 3rd and 4th are my favorite.
Love the tattoo on the first face-up, but I think the color is a little too soft. Maybe after you'd drawn it use acrylic color over to make it look clear. If the line is too hard use pastel brush over it.

for me when I done faceup for my dolls, lower eyelash I use super sharp watercolor pencil. Practice your hand on the head cap before paint it down^^

when I have no idea for my doll I will think of his/her character then open a magazine, find the model that fit in the character I want my doll to be. Then faceup the same style if make up of those model on my doll

    5. Thank you all for your comment / critique! :)
Can't answer much now 'cause I have much to learn for university right now.
I'll write more when theres less to learn. ;)

But I found out, that with the third one for me the main problem was the eyesize. They are just too big for him. With smaller eyes he looks much better. Now I have to get smaller nes in the right colour. :)

    6. number 1 - I absolutely love his tattoo. Where did you get the idea for that design, does it have a meaning? What medium did you use to create it? I'm thinking of maybe doing some tats on future dolls! He is so pretty overall. Great faceup in addition to his rad tat!

    7. I think the tattoo in 1 looks great and very clean looking. Number 4 is a great interpretation and very unique :)
