My goal is one complete face-up per month for 2023. I'm working on six heads in a row because (1) better practice opportunities, and (2) if I get them all done by the end of the month... I'm free till July, right? Please note: these are all bad. Dollmore Model Eva Louise: Resinsoul Mi: Resinsoul Mei: Unoa Lusis faceplate: Impldoll Leona: Mystic Kids Miri (58 cm): And finally, clean slate:
Would you like any constructive-criticism or advice? They really aren't that bad. It's good that you're trying different looks to stretch your skills. I think the Mei is my favorite. I like the colors you chose, very malachite or mineral looking.
I would be delighted to accept all constructive criticism, feedback, suggestions, and pointers. Thank you in advance. I think it's a gift to receive helpful suggestions!
THere's a couple tips I have based on my experiences doing (almost) all my dolls. If you feel like your eyebrows are Off, it's because you've been perching them well above the Orbital Arch. The top of the eyesocket is a little brow ridge and in a majority of people that's where the eyebrows go. Right on that edge. I tend to do eyebrows with a little pastel base but then seal that layer, and top them off with superfine brushstrokes of watercolor paint in a dark color, layered on until I get the hair thickness I want. Because they're watercolor, you can wipe them off leaving the under brow base and keep trying until you get it how you want it. I do this for eyeliner and eyelashes too- working in stages with watercolors or watercolor pencils to save each bit I get right, then do the next stage. I really love the almost Korean-style lipstain lip color look you've got going on the lips. You'll find finishing them with a lightly brushed on Satin acrylic gloss medium will make them look more real, ever so slightly reflective like even unstained lips are. Use full gloss finish for the Wet/lip-glossed look if you want it. another thing you'll find that will help faceups will be to actually add some pinks under the nose. You've got some on the ears, but people's nostrils lacking color will always look off even if you can't pinpoint why. Depending on the makeup palette or skintone, your pinks might have some greys or browns or more golds in them, or be much darker richer color for darker resins.
@Rosslyn - thanks! I hadn't even thought about putting pink under the nose, but that's a great point. I really want all of my faces to have that 90s mean-girl over-plucked brow look - like your Elinore, but even thinner. Someone else recommended making three tiny dots with a watercolor pencil, and then doing a smudge of pastel to connect the dots, which I also want to try. But I love the idea of smudge, seal, THEN paint. I've got nail art brushes that should do the job perfectly! I'm glad you like the lips! I do have gloss seal - I just didn't bother for most of the faces because I was already unhappy with the eyebrows. And the ones that I did seal - well, that's how I learned that when Mr Super Clear says matte, they MEAN it. One spray of MSC, and the gloss was gone.
@MaleficentMrsofEvil Gloss is generally the second to the last step in doing a faceup, and doesn't need to be sealed with MSC or the like. It holds up on it's own fairly well. I think for your eyebrows it's just a matter of getting your paint consistency right, which is still hard for me. lol
Hey it’s me from the no-buy thread Here’s the girl I’ve been working on today! Chloe had a faceup I did earlier but I wanted to give her a makeover. Or rather under haha I’m practicing faceups with more color. The first was just too much for my taste and style. So I tried again. This softer so better, but not all that neat and tidy lol That’s okay though!
@lully.lullers Look at those perfect little eyebrows! Such pretty lips! Skin texturing! Any pointers? Your work is gorgeous!
Eyebrows are easier if you use watercolor pencils. I have more control with pencils than using a brush. I can make the "hair lines' better and more refined.
Thank you! A tip I use for myself. I start with the lips. I will pat on the pastel and then use a mini fan brush to sweep away the fallout. Cuz it will get in her chin and cheeks so I'll clean it up before sealing the layer. Now I will do 2 or 3 layers of only working on the lips to build color, before moving on to blushing her cheek, chin, and nose. I also find doing this gives more sealant grit for when I start working on the eyes and eyebrows. Oh and I love glitter lol I put on their cheeks and eyelids almost every time. I can't help it I second this. I use watercolor pencils. My technique for eyebrows is first I tap on pastel ligther than the intended brow color. (Medium brown usually.) And use a small paintbrush to wipe away powder to shape the brows into an arch I like. It takes a lot of dabbing on powder and wiping away powder lol When the brows look similar enough and are in the same postion on the face, I seal my work. Then come back with more pastel to darken and tweak shaping. Seal and then use pencils to draw the hairs. I like watercolor pencils cuz you can erase them if you make a mistake.
I actually think you have a really cool style going on here! I really like the way you do the eyeshadows, it has a painterly look, With more practice in refinement of eyeliner and crease lines, I think your style could look really cool!! Try going a little slower when going into the darker paints. I suggest to start with a really light colored watercolour pencil just to sketch in where you want lines to go, that way you can make sure the brows are even before the paint
Well - I started on multiple faces at the same time. Got frustrated about halfway through and wiped most of them. Now I'm doing "make-unders" - trying to finish face-ups with less pigment, less color, just less. Here is my attempt at Resinsoul Mi. The eyelashes are horrible and getting yanked. Someone recommended I do three dots to plan out the shape of the eyebrows, and I really like the tip - except that my "dots" are too dark, and now I can still see them. I was watching some face-up videos. One professional I watched painted in the eyelashes first, and then put pastels over top. I like this idea - it creates a softer finished look. The other thing I realized from watching face-up videos is that I am too impatient. Other artists will dab on a little color, seal, dab a little more, and seal again. I lay down one big blob of color all at once, and then I'm frustrated when it doesn't stick well. I need to slow down and let the color build.
I'm loving the lips you do, such a great choice of colors and they look so nice! Also, I see you improved a lot on the brows since the first pics (though I like the expressiveness of the arched ones too ^^), well done! After you get more practice on drawing the hairs, you can play more with the shapes till you find the look you want. The 3 dots is a very helpful tip, I used it a lot too, it helps improving very fast when paired with lots of practice. You can try using a lighter color (like a faint beige for the dots if the eyebrows will be brown) so that they will be covered by the darker color. Also I saw a video where someone was using a sort of stencil for the basic brow shape. They'd use that to apply the base color in a even way, and then paint the hairs by hand. I'll try to find it and post here. Eyebrows are the worst part for me too xD They require a lot of patience I usually do not have ^^' I just want to get them done asap, but the extra paciente totally pays off in the end ^^
Ok, I found a good example of stencil brows here. For the dolls you can use the 3 dots as a guide to place the stencil better. Then just apply the pastel powder. Then draw the hairs. But it's a good idea to start with much lighter base colors than the dark brown used in the video.
Hey! totally forgot I even started this thread. (Lawdy) I "finished" an Unoa faceplate, but I'm going to wipe it. Same story with Resinsoul Mei (too pink): The one face-up that is done-done is off-topic (a 1:1 scale BJD), and I had my breakthrough on eyebrows. I finally made eyebrows I like. Even Spouse walked over and gave me a compliment. (!!!) Sorry. You'll have to go to my Flickr to see her.
