Aesthetics Face up finished, critiques needed please UPDATED: new face up

Aug 10, 2014

1. Hello!

I recently started doing my own face ups but it's been a bit hard for me...especially with this guy:pout:...please let me know what you think of it and how I can improve =] the face up is done with pastels and watercolor pencils only.

All done up^^
[IMG]

This is my 4th face up btw....I thought my other face ups were all simple and I wanted to do something different (hence the blue eyeshadow) but I feel like somethings is off and I don't know how to improve it (I tried like 3 times just to fail miserably)

----

UPDATE:

Thanks to the wonderful feedback, I was able to do a better face up (it looks better than the previous one at least :sweat ) I would like to receive more feedback for the new one please, reading your comments helps me improve my face up skills and I hope someday I can become a pro like many of you :aheartbea

I'm still having trouble blending my pastels, once again, I don't know what the problem is (MSC too old?) :[ I use 2 brands: 1 cheap and 1 expensive and I have the same results with both. Oh well....keep practicing it is.

For some reason, I wanted to add a band-aid...does it look good with it? which one looks better? or I should just get rid of it??*_*
[IMG]

Thanks for looking~^^

EDIT:

Final look

Finally I'm very happy with his face up and it was possible thanks to you all!

2. I can't offer any advice how to improve, but he looks great! Just had to say so.

3. Thank you mollym! :]

4. First off, I want to applaud your work. This is your 4th face-up? Unbelievable.. It looks professional rated.

I'm not a face-up expert nor have I tried to do a face-up but I'm a good critic >< I love the lips. Whatever you are doing, keep doing it. I love how real they look with all the shadows. The lower lashes are fantastic too!

I'm a huge eyebrow junky (the darker, the slightly better? How do I explain haha..) I do feel the eyebrows could be a little bit darker. Also, his eyebrows come out a lot towards the middle. I can only explain this by lining up a ruler to the nostril. The end of the eyebrow should be lined up or a little bit shorter (in my opinion). Maybe it's because I'm not a boy BJD collector or I favor the more simple styles but his face would look great with no eye shadow. It makes his eyes look overpowered, "heavy and tired", especially since his sculpt's eyes look slightly closed. He has such good features to show off but my attention went straight to the eye shadow. The crease could be as light as the current eyebrows are too.

Sorry if my critique is useless.. but I do see great potential in you. Overall, you look like you have a pretty steady hand and great patience.

5. I will keep in mind what you said about the eyebrows and eyeshadow the next time I redo his face up. They are the parts I struggle the most with^^ and I feel like your feedback will help me a lot! :D

Thank you so much for your input! it's been very useful *bows*

6. It looks wonderful, the only thing I can add is that maybe the transition from the blue to regular skin tone could be smoother? It's a bit of a sharp line going from the shading to skin, I don't know that I've seen anyone wear makeup that way (unless this was intentional!) keep up the good work :)

7. Thank you! =D I will redo his face up this weekend hopefully and I'll try to make a smoother line and better eyeshadow...my pastels don't cooperate with me when I want to blend colors >_< I don't know if it is the lack of practice or the MSC being so old but I'll keep practicing!

Thank you all so much!! :D

8. I think you have done a fantastic job! Hard to believe it is only your 4th face-up! I love his mouth, great color and shading on the lips. Only thing I would prefer is no eye shadow or a lot less as it becomes a focal point. I have never done a face-up; just an observer interested in BJDs. Keep up the great work!

9. Thank you :D

New pictures of the new face up added: I got rid of the blue eyeshadow, I also tried to do darker and shorter eyebrows, what do you think? :]

10. Hey again, yumi! I just saw your new face-up and got serious feels of excitement. It looks excellent and very natural! I forgot to include darking of the lower lashes in my last critique but you did it anyways~ I'm very proud of you and your work so far. One thing that has my attention now are his upper eyelashes and how they fall onto his eye. I don't have a boy so I'm not sure how the eyelashes are suppose to look but that's all I can see "flaw-wise". Eyebrows are fantastic :D A+ for them~ As for the band-aids, I'd go with the nude colored but personally, he looks great without it.

11. Bandaids? That just blew my mind. IN a good way. Brave, fun, and well done! As for wich, I'm really not sure.

12. Yay!!! I feel like when I pass a really hard and important test  you helped me figure out a better way to do eyebrows, so thank you! *bows* the eyelashes also bother me but they were the only ones I had, they're kind of hard to put but I will order a better type and change them the next time I redo his face up because seriously, this face up business is really hard!! I had back pain a lot >_< and somehow, I felt so tired after finishing the face up =__=...I hope not to redo it until a few years later...XD

Thank you!! <3 I really wanted to do a scar or a bruise but I'm not that confident in my skills yet and I didn't feel like messing up -again- and redo the face up -again- so I went for the easiest route :XD:

13. :D You give me hope(I'm going to be doing a first faceup soon) Both are absolutley stunning!!

I wanted to add, I was going across the "worst doll experiences" thread and saw your post. I know it's hard to view your own work as perfect or even good sometimes, but you truly did an amazing job!!

14. From your photos I would probably advise you to just keep doing what you're doing because the photos that you've posted show a clear, positive progression. If we look at the latest photo for example, if I purchased a doll and it came with that faceup I would be happy with that. Of course that doesn't mean that you've reached the pinnacle of faceups. Regardless of what we're doing, there's always things that we can do better. That said, you're definitely heading in the right direction. As far as critiquing your work, I would perhaps suggest that you take some time to look over other people's work (which I'm sure you've already done) and just pick out elements that you like and then try to put those into practice the next time you do a faceup. Maybe print out some pictures and have them on the wall in front of you as you work so you can refer to them directly. My personal tastes would include a stronger brow line on male dolls, but that's just my personal preference, so assess that advice accordingly.

15. Pasty_Angels: thank you so much!! :D I wish you luck on your first face up! my first one was really a mess^^ and you're right, sometimes we are our strongest critics. I'm trying to work on that too ^^;

Danzig : aww thank you for your critique!! I really appreciate it and I will follow it accordingly. I'm glad you like the second face up, I have done some re-touches since then: I darkened and thickened his eyebrows more. But next time I will make the eyebrows stronger because I agree that male dolls look better that way. Still practicing with the eyebrow territory, it is the one I struggle with the most >_< (and the eyelashes!)
I do save pictures of face ups I like for inspirattion and I watch youtube videos, they're helpful but the advice from you all have been more helpful!!

Thank you all once again!!!!

16. If by lashes you mean the application of false eyelashes on the upper eyelid there is a tutorial that was posted on youtube a few weeks ago by a faceup artist showing how she does it. She also does some exquisite faceups which she has also posted videos for.

http://youtu.be/R8Gc_LT9thg

17. I think you did a very good job on this face-up. Some blushing on and around the nose, the jaw and the philtrum could give his face more life. The line on his eyelid looked a little harsh with the blue eyeshadow, but it looks a lot better without the blue eyeshadow!

18. That is amazing!! I really like the blue bandaid over the plain bandaid, it looks good with his eyeshadow. He is a gorgeous sculpt in general, and your face up looks great on him. I think it all looks very professional.

19. I mean both: the application of false eyelashes and painting the lower eyelashes *_* applying the false eyelashes is more nerve-racking for me though, thanks a lot for the video! I will check it out! :]

Thank you for your input, I thought he looked kind of plain too so I added more blushing around his nose, I also played around a little bit more. This is how he looks now (not a big difference):

The other guy will get another face up soon so I will make sure to follow your and all the other advises!! :D

Thank you for your kind words!! sometimes I remove the bandaid, I'm going to make another one soon.

With all your suggestions I have learned a lot, so thank you all once again! *bows*

20. He came out sos beautiful ahh wow!! well done

21. I have to say your updated work looks very professional, you have a good eye (and hand) for that :)

22. Wow! He looks gorgeous! I would totally get a face-up from you!
To say the least, he looks freaking hot!

23. Thank you so much!! :aheartbea

Thank you for calling it professional :blush I was able to get to that point thanks to the wonderful feedback here. =]

To think that you would like to get a face up from me makes me sooooo happy!! best compliment ever!

24. oh my... they're soo sexy ! ;) What kind of acrylics did you use ?

25. He looks amazing, the new faceup looks incredibly smooth and (as everyone else is saying) professional, he looks incredibly handsome :love

26. Nevaeh: thank you! *hugs* I didn't use acrylics, the face up was done with watercolor pencils and pastels only : )
Emilyandwhatnot: I'm really really happy that you think that :D thanks a lot!

27. Wow, really good job ! :D Thanks for this info ! ;)

28. As a beginner you' re really good already! And from a Switch lover, you did him justice for the cool guy he is.

29. Your welcome!! [IMG] I tried to do face ups with acrylics before but I messed up so bad that I rather stick with watercolor pencils and pastels for now XD

Wow thank you thank you!! when I look at my guy I feel happy not only because he finally has the face up I wanted (with the help of the wonderful people here <3) but also because of these comments, they make my day.

I added one final pic to the first post because I have done retouches to his face up, and that's how he currently looks. =}
