Aesthetics Face-up Critique please.

Jan 9, 2013

    1. With my Xmas money from the in-laws, I decided to invest in doing face-ups.
My watercolour pencils came in the mail this morning, so I decided to test out those and the pastels I have.
I still have my acrylics and my gloss in the mail, they should arrive within the week.

I used Faber and Castell Pastels and Watercolour pencils.
The acrylics I bought were Liquidex. And the gloss I bought is Tamiya gloss.
The sealant I used is Army Painter Anti-Shine Matte Varnish.

My model is an Angel Street Zazean.

      Critique is highly recommended.

      Thank you. :cake:

    2. Very good first try! You have a good sense of balance and symetry, without looking like a factory cookie cutter, which is something I always like to see.

Now, I'm seeing a couple things I'm not sure about; is there a white residue along his nise and brow line, possibly from removing a previous faceup? I can't quite tell.

I would go a little lighter on the pinking around the eyes. That's a nice touch for veeery close to the lid, where it's moist, but I think a peachy apricot, or slightly pinkish brown (light) would look better as you blend out. Having that much pink outside the lid can give an impression of sickness or drunkenness, which of course does have it's place. Also, I see a few streaky areas of shading, particularly under the brow. Gentle, light layers and LOTS of blending will fix that in the future! I can see by the shading on the upper lid that you already have skill with shading and blending, so it's just a matter of practice!

    3. I can't honestly say anything from experience because I have yet to do my first face-up.
Looking at the picture the first thing I noticed was the pink, then the eye lids/lashes, lips, then eyebrows.
The eyelids, eyelashes and lips look great!
The eyebrows need a little more detail/hairs drawn in.
Maybe add a little blush/cheek color?
This is a WIP so, so far so good!

    4. Blending blending blending. Blending is your best friend. I can see the strokes in the pink and as mentioned above, the white is stark. I am also seeing a bit of a mix of styles. I also think the pink beneath his eyes is far too dark. It kind of reminds me of when my brother would rub lipstick on his cheeks. With his skin tone he probably shouldn;t have too much pink on him (just my opinion of course) The eyebrows need a bit more detail, also mentioned above.
I love his lips though, very nice indeed.
Keep going! Face ups are hard and it's easy to give up! Don't! <3
