Faceups Faber-Castell pastels

Sep 6, 2017

    1. Looking at faceup supplies for when I get my first doll and am looking at a pack of 72 pastels by Faber-Castell and was wondering if anyone has used them and could tell me if the pigment is good? Also do half size pastels last long for faceups? I feel like they will get used up too fast compared to full length ones!
      Thanks!

    2. faber-castell is wonderful. sometimes I use it for very fine lines. Just don't put too much pressure when using a sharpened tip otherwise underlying UV coating could be damaged.

    3. Yeah, i used faber-castell as well and so far it's been the only water color pencil that's done what I need in terms of details.

    4. I bought a small set of Faber Castell as my first pastels for faceups and they work just fine! You'll have to scrape off the pigment with a sharp object to use it though since the pastels are too firm to pick up pigment directly with a brush. I haven't even come close to using a full stick yet. But I also don't do faceups terribly often (I plan to fix that though).

I'd say go for it. Though, I might suggest getting a smaller set first as you may likely outgrow them quickly. I bought a small set, then only a month or so after I wanted to buy higher quality ones like schmincke and sennelier.

I found that I only really used a few colors from the set too, but maybe you'd be different.

It's up to you! But Faber Castell are fine to use :)

    5. @littleraeven I was just going to say that you probably don't need 72 pastels! You can also mix/blend colors to make other colors.

    6. I was going to go with 72 as it looked like there were a lot more colours for blushing and stuff but maybe it is a better idea to get a smaller set! Plus I hadn't thought about the fact I can just mix colours! And if I do go for 72 its only £18 so it wouldn't be a waste of money! Thanks guys!

    7. You're very welcome! Yeah, what happened with me was I ended up using the fleshy tones and if I wanted a specific color I would mix them. I actually only did it once - I needed a teal so I mixed blue and green together and it worked fine!

And then you can have that extra money to spend on a couple of the really high quality ones if you like :) though, that might expose you to it and you'll want to buy more...lmao that's what happened to me. I bought one Schmincke pastel in pink, and that one worked so much better than the Faber Castell ones that I wanted all of mine to be like that XD

But It's still a good start to have a set. that way you can at least have more than just flesh and pink and red colors.

    8. Well I prefer Sennelier and Rembrandt and schmincke more as I also got two pastels from Fabre-castell..... and to be honest you really don't need that many colours, I got my 30 colour Rembrandt and I just use like five of them_(:3」∠)_ and also, half stick is enough for faceup

    9. ^ What the others said - I bought all of my pastels one by one, because you will not need 10 shades of blue or 10 shades of green - but like 20 shades of peach/pink/skin, which aren't available in a big box.

    10. Compared to more expensive pastels, Faber Castell is harder and more stiff, meaning that you need to scrape off the chalk to get good pigments. It's not as easy as those "dip your brush and go" kind of pastels. Just like drugstore make ups - you make it work, it will work xD.

Also, I doubt you would need all 72 colors. For me, blue and greens, unless for highlight, are rarely used compared to flesh tone colors. Why not invest the same amount of money and get quality singles?

    11. I actually prefer some of my FC pastels over my rembrandt :XD: It is true that you often have to scrape them so definitely keep an exacto handy! But they work well and are pigmented and the price is great

    12. I got a 12 pack Faber Castell pastel and I'm glad Faber Castell pastels (soft chalky ones ofc) are safe for resin use. Thank you!

    13. I have a set of the faber-castels, and then a set of the mungyo ones Soom sells, and some Jack richeson hand-rolled singles, and I’ve found that for colours I want really pigmented, my Jacks way way outperform the FC’s. I use the other sets of pastels to broaden my colour range, and to add shades here and there, but I’ve honestly found I’d go through a lot more sealant building up some colours

    14. Ah, so the Faber Castells have less pigment to filler ratio?

    15. Yes they're safe to use on resin but definitely have less pigment than some others. They're not bad to have around when you're going for something subtle because you'll never get too much on there in a single layer. But to pack in more color you'll have to make many layers.

    16. That makes sense. Thank you. I think maybe I should get Rembrandt, even if they're pricey?

    17. If you know which colors you'll use most in your faceups, I recommend upgrading to Rembrandts or another high quality brand. If you're learning to do your first faceups and you already have some FCs, you might just play around with them first and figure out what colors you'll wanna use the most, so you don't spend too much getting some colors you won't use too much. You can use the savings for more dollie stuff :thumbup

    18. Thank you! That is smart to use cheaper brands to mark out colors, before buying the specific more expensive ones.
