Esthetics Eyelashes: Tips on Removing, Applying, Glues & Types of Lashes

Aug 30, 2004

1. You can use any strength rubbing alcohol to remove excess eyelash adhesive (the human kind). it will damage a faceup though, so be careful if using on a doll directly.

My favorite glue is Fabric-Tac- it's clear fabric glue with a strong hold, but dries rubbery so you can peel it off when you want to change lashes. I let it set for a few seconds inside the eye well, then press the lashes into it, and put another layer over it just in case. It holds the lashes, but isn't very sticky on my fingers, and since it's washable, it will hold up to a hot washcloth if you want to set the curve of said eyelashes. =)

2. I tried applying lashes to my doll, but they bend down too much for my liking. Would an eyelash curler fix that?

3. I used human eyelash glue. It takes about 30 seconds to dry, but it works. It comes off with makeup remover, I used the Olay cleansing clothes for sensitive skin (hehe they were handy) which hasn't done anything to my SD's factory faceup.

4. I'm wary of human eyelash glue, as it's not glue, it's latex. Anything made for cleaning or going on human skin is generally not a good idea for resin, as they almost always contain oils.

I have had a head come in with lashes glued in with superglue. If that ever happens again I'm sending it back unfinished, because it took ages to try and scrape that crap out of there. Aleene's tacky glue holds really well, is easy to use, and soaks off in water leaving the lashes in perfect shape to be used again. Superglue is guaranteed to ruin the lashes, will leave residue inside the doll's head, and worse thing of all, any paint that is under the superglue will never come off. Nasty, nasty stuff.

5. Thanks all for the info. Has anyone every tried Titebond liquid hide glue to attach eyelashes? It's supposed to be water soluble but still provide a very strong bond (unless it gets wet). I know the luthieres (instrument makers) use it.

6. I could really use some eyelash advice. eyelash glue didn't stay on at all, it just popped right off on its own the next day. I won't use superglue. I'm thinking of placing individual lashes like this: http://www.headcovers.com/prodimages/5311-Black.jpg
with elmers, then trimming to size. What do you think?

7. OKay, Loki's got eyelashes that I have never put on him reason? I can't get them on!

His head is the size of a walnut...which means His eyes are sooo tiny, and I can't get his eyelashes in there because whatever I use to put them in place constantly gets in the way. (tweezers, fingers, you name it)

ANyone have any like..tips on how to get eyelashes on? The poor boy really needs them (He also needs his other hand...which is missing..>.< but thats another story)

8. I have a Chicline Rou, who is a touch larger than an EB Beauty head,
I have managed to put eyelashes on him by sliding them in from the front,
and pressing them on the inside using a needle (obviously glue has already been
applied). In my experience it helps if you curl/soften/reshape the eyelashes with
your fingers first, so that they better contour/curve to the shape of the eye itself.

Hope that helps. (:

9. Cool! thank you! I'll try that and see if we have success.

10. So, the $1/tube "Eyelash Gum" from Leekeworld. First things first: it's generic white glue (dries clear), nothing less, nothing more . That said, the quantity - held up against a 4 FL OZ bottle of Aleene's Original Tacky Glue - I estimate to be approximately 2 FL OZ, assuming they filled the tube completely. So the value is also average. The only thing this has over a bottle of Tacky Glue or Ross' School Glue is that the tube itself is nice and skinny and the the tip is small. There's an inexplicably shaped tip on the other end as well, the purpose of which escapes me. The tip on either end can be removed for refilling the tube.

I used this to put eyelashes on my Lilis Liv head, my very first time applying eyelashes, and it went pretty well for newbie work. If you use white glue for eyelashes, I'd say get one of these to put your Ross' or Tacky Glue or whatever into because it's good for small work, and way easier to maneuver than the original bottles, I'm sure. If you use a different adhesive, then probably don't even bother.

11. Does anyone know if Scotch Quick Adhesive is alright to use? I can't find any elmers at my house. XD

12. Having been playing with Andi's eyelashes, I have actually stuck them in her at the moment with kneadable eraser. I gave up on glue because it annoyed me too much. As Andi doesn't change eyes, the only time I will be taking them out is for a new faceup, so it doesn't affect me too badly. Because I had been using plain old school glue to stick the lashes in previously, there is a nice edge of glue residue that gives more space to stick the eraser on. Has been working really well for me!

13. If I were you, I wouldn't risk it. Just buy some school glue at the local market or dollar store.

14. Actually, I tried an old eyelash curler (just replaced the plastic thingy where your lashes go with a fresh one) and it works like a dream. Just be careful when using it around your doll's faecup cause stuff happens.

15. I just use PVA glue to stick the eyelashes in, let them stick for a bit, and then using tweezers I push them nicely into place.

When putting eyelashes into YO's, do you buy a different size? They all seem too long to me, so I was wondering if there were any recommendations? Thanks!

16. I would cut the eyelash to fit after taking the eyelash, measuring the coverage of the lash in the eye, cut to size, glue and perfect lashes!! Same thing if your MSD or SD needed lashes but the ones chosen are too long. I buy false lashes (human size) and cut them to fit in my girl. My boy gets synthetic because they look less girly in him.

17. I agree with the above poster about trimming the eyelashes to the length you want.
It would probably be a lot easier if you got the proper scissors though. I haven’t had

much luck getting any of my trimmed lashes to look natural (tapper at the ends) so
I rarely trim the ones in my dolls, even when they are too long due to fear of ruining them.

I saw some scissors for trimming eyelashes at Volks’ web-stores, but I don’t know if they
actually work so I have procrastinated purchasing some. I wonder if anyone has gotten any
good luck with those? I hate wasting money on things that don’t work regardless of their price,
so it would be good to know if anyone has tried them and has gotten good results before I
try those myself.

18. My girls eyelash just pulled off when i went to replace her putty, your video and the advice of the girl who put them in my girl in the first place reassured me <3 thanks Mel-Mel!

19. In a pinch, you can make your own lashes! I put some eyelashes that I made on my Iplehouse Asa. I had some human lashes but they all seemed too dense and far too long. I was too impatient to buy some online and wait for them (and the postal people were on strike anyway) I made mine with some bits of Saran wig hair leftover from wigmaking. They worked nicely, although I admit I applied them (with Aleens Tacky glue) onto the eyelid rather than into the eye cavity. :| I may change that, and they're still pretty dense for my doll, but for now, I'm pretty happy with the look :3nodding:

20. Okay, I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what. I've been trying to put eyelashes on my doll with regular white glue as many people have suggested, but I can't get it to work! It won't stick to the eye lids, it just sticks to whatever I'm using to apply them, tweezers, toothpick or me!:doh I can't figure it out!:...(

21. ^ Maybe you are applying the glue on the wrong side or too much of it?
It should be enough to cover the strip that holds the lashes together
and no more than that. If you wait a bit until the glue gets a bit tacky
(semi-transparent) you will get better results too.

I like applying my doll’s eyelashes with a needle, because they are thinner,
I can get a very small amount of glue on them and they don’t get in the way as much
when it comes time to pressing the lashes against the resin. The glue doesn’t
seem to get stuck to needles as much either, so I like using them instead of other
tools. Good luck! (:

22. Be careful with that glue. It contains acetone which can melt and stain resin.

23. Hi, I'm looking for a clear glue. I've already tried Elmers and I really don't like it, any suggestions. I've found Aleene's Clear Gel Tacky Glue and wondering if it's safe to use?

24. Now this might seem like a crazy idea, but is it also possible to paint lashes? What paint would stick permanently?

25. So eyelashes, is it possible to change them without damaging the make up on the doll? Or are you stuck with the same eyelashes unless you want to change the make up?

26. Since I apply mine to my dolls with elmers glue, they come off quiet easily without damaging the face up.

27. *nodnod* I will usually just use a toothpick and poke and prod at it to get it loose.
Or alternatively, Elmer's glue is water-based. You can try to wet and gently loosen the glue with a wet q-tip or something, but that will then involve more careful nitpicky stuff, since the wet glue will then get everywhere. :sweat I did that once, and I spent hours with wet q-tips trying to get glue off the outside of my kid's eyes.

28. Hmm, And if the company I ordered the doll from put the wrong eyelashes on? XD They said they couldn't change it, something to do with the faceup being done. . . Then again I never did get a clear answer one way or another.

29. I doubt that they would be on there permanently, and I doubt it would damage the face up unless you're clumsy about it. If you have/when you get your doll, pictures would help.

30. Depends, really. I changed my doll's eyelashes and it actually ripped off some of her eyeliner, so now there are chips.

31. In theory, the glue should go just inside the eyewell and not on the actual line of the eyelid, so removing the lashes shouldn't affect the face-up.

32. And if you do chip the eyeliner, you can just paint it back on. It shouldn't be too noticeable, my best friend's had it happen before ^_^

33. If you do it carefully enough, it will not affect the face-up in any way.

34. Don't try to pull IH eyelashes, it will rip the eyeliner off, they glue it so hard to the eyes. I end up have to wash off the face up :(

35. Dumb question...do you use the same eyelashes they make for humans? Like, the same kind you see at Sally's or the drugstore?

36. You can. Just use a toothpick and clear-drying elmers glue. :)

37. I use eyelashes meant for humans, the ones you find in drugstores. I prefer them
to the "doll-meant" ones because there is more variety in thickness for the human ones.
You just have to trim them to size –the hard part for me is getting the length
of the actual hairs right (not an easy task with a crummy pulse like mine!). (:

- Enzyme

38. I use white glue and human sized eyelashes which I cut in half, both of which I buy from the dollar store. I add eyelashes into the eyesocket itself, so the face-up isn't in danger.

39. Thanks! I'm glad to hear you can use human ones...there are so many lovely varieties at the beauty supply and drug stores!

40. Great post, I have two dolls that need eye lashes. I've been avoiding it, but will be off to the dollar store tomorrow. I love the dollar store, everything costs a dollar - it's like magic.

41. I just got my first doll and when I changed her eyes, one of her eyelashes came out! How do I fix it? ;_;

42. white school glue, a tooth pick and press them back in : )

it's really easy!

43. totally agree with deni that is the best way and it works a treat

44. Do I put the glue on the lashes or he faceplate? And how much should I use?

45. just put the glue along the edge of the eyelashes, and a thin trail should do :)

I usually make sure i can SEE the trail of white glue, leave it to set completely and then reapply the eyes.

46. XD that was a pain in the ass, but it looks okay.

Thanks guys!

47. If this has been asked before, please bear with me, I don't wanna scroll through 46 pages of replies...

I want to attach the eyelashes on Alice (LittleFee Flora) permanently, so they never ever come off, or at least stay on while travelling. What kind of glue would be best for that? Will white glue or fabric glue work and hold? Some other type of glue that I have access to offline, like at craft stores?

48. White glue is strong enough to keep eyelashes on even while traveling because you'd probably put a face protector on so nothing rubs against them.
White glue dries clear so you can use a lot or if you just use a little bit, it might come loose a bit but is easy to fix because white glue is easy to get.
It's not a good idea to use anything stronger to make it permanent because the eyelashes might get crushed/messy and will need to be replaced to fix it.

49. I use to gloss oil, and someone use to double side tape.
but, gloss oil is better if you change eyes frequently.

50. I use human sized fake lashes, apply them with tacky glue and a toothpick and trim them, when necessary. Tacky glue holds them on really well, and it takes a bit of pulling to get them off. It also dries clear.

51. you might want to watch "andreja's nicole's dream" youtube...
I like how she attaches eyelashes...

52. Use glue and a toothpick to put the back in...elmer's glue is said to be the most effective. Let it dry over night, and you're done!

53. I'm having the hardest time applying eyelashes in my JID I. They'll be in fine, they'll be out of the way of her eyes, and then i put her eyes in and they point straight down towards her chin. I have gorgeous silicone eyes and they're never seen because of her lashes and she looks totally odd without them to me now!! I tried a single strip method, the way Andreja does hers, nothing is working. any tips?

54. I don't know what you mean by "single strip method," but I googled one of Andreja's videso to try to understand what you mean. She puts the eyelashes very far back into the head (compared to what I do). If your glue isn't strong enough to keep the lashes exactly where they are, when you put the eyes in it'll bend all the extra stuff hanging out in the eyewell. Even more so if the eyelash fibers are really stiff, the eye pushing against the stuff sticking out into the eyewell will bend the lashes down. (I can take pictures of this to help explain it if my description isn't clear.)

Some suggestions given to me were to crimp or bend the eyelashes, that way the excess curves up into the eyewell and the nice long fibers can stick out in the direction you want. The way to do that that was suggested to me was to install the eyelashes as I wanted, put in the eyes I wanted, then tie a string around the doll's head that would press the lashes into the proper shape. Since it is plastic it will eventually take the shape, was the reasoning. You may also be able to use a human eyelash curler, which is what I would've tried if I hadn't gotten better ones.

However, I think the easiest way to avoid the eyeballs squishing the lashes is to attach the weft/band to the upper eyelid instead of attaching the middle of the hairs to the eyelid~ I'm working on a head that I encountered a problem that sounds similar, but if I misunderstood your words and suggested something you already know I'm sorry!

55. Where can doll sized eyelashes be purchased? I have tried human size and they seem way too much for the sweet look on the smaller dolls. Thank you for any information.
Also, I greatly appreciate the advise on this thread about applying lashes. My first attempt did not go well, but I am open to trying some of these ideas.

56. I get mine from Denver Doll Emporium, but most doll supply places carry them (Monique, Global, etc).

57. really helpful!

58. I used regular false lashes from the drug store. trim it up for a MSD (since it will be too long) I don't just add the school glue on the lashes itself. I actually use a toothpick so it'll be easier to apply it on without the excess all over the faceup. and applying it with the toothpick to position the lashes. then I usually seperate the lashes that get usually stuck together by the glue

59. Does anyone have any tips for applying eyelashes to Dreaming heads?
I'm getting the hang of regular, open eyes, but I just got a Dreaming Soony head, and I'm having so much trouble! ><

60. both my Dorian's eyelashes(soom hyperon) have come loose and i don't know what to do use to glue them back in place :( i thought of using crazy glue but iam afraid that maybe if i need to change them in the future they won't come off or i will damage his eye make up?? could someone please recommend me what to use and do in this case! thank you very much in advance!!
