Esthetics Eyelashes: Tips on Removing, Applying, Glues & Types of Lashes

Aug 30, 2004

1. how does one go about attaching eyelashes? :\

2. First, one reads the Sticky on Basic Maintenance, Cleaning, and Repair in this forum to find this link about attaching eyelashes: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2260. Or one does a search in this forum. ;)

3. Sorry if this has been brought up a lot already in the thread but it was so long :sweat

Where can I buy eyelashes that are not really long, have an even fullness, and where the tips taper out? I See some eyelashes that are really nice, but also see some that look like spider legs >_< or lashes from a cheap dollar store doll. I'd like nice ones either in black or dark brown. Suggestions? They are for a boy and I don't want them to be super girly.

4. Denver Doll Emporium usually has a pretty good selection of eyelashes; I've bought several pairs from them.

5. Soooooooooo soooooooo sorry if this is in the wrong catagory!!! im pretty new to this :sweat
but one of my boys eyelashes is starting to fall off and i was wondering what i could use to glue it back on. I dont think superglue would work because it turns resin weird colors and tends to make it bumpy. So please awnser this soon, he dosnt like having only one eyelash hehehe

Thanks so much!!! :aheartbea

6. Quick answer: Elmer's glue is fine.

7. For future reference, this goes in the Painting, Customizing, and Esthetics subforum. So the mods might move it. There's probably a tutorial in the sticky threads (the first one you see) but this is an easy question so I'll just answer it.

You can glue eyelashes back in with a regular water-based white glue, like Elmer's or Ailene's Tacky glue. Use a toothpick to put a few wee dots of glue on the doll's eyewall (take his eye out first). Use a second, clean toothpick to press and poke the lashes into place, and let dry overnight before you put his eye back in. It's kind of annoying but totally doable.
You're right to not use Superglue--it's only for things you never, ever want to change, like gluing on a broken finger. Eyelashes get smooshed and need to be replaced sometimes, so you want a glue that is water-based and not too strong.

8. Oh thank you soo soooo much!!!!!!! <3

9. I tried searching to see if this was posted anywhere else, but wasnt able to find anything. If it is somewhere else already, please feel free to delete this!

I just wanted to share my little find. I really wanted to get new eyelashes for my MSD doll. I of course went searching online, but I didnt want all of the hassle of ordering, using my paypal, and shipping. >.< So I decided to go to the store and just buy regular eyelashes for humans and trim them to the size I wanted. I went to my local wal-mart and actually found something even better. They are called Revlon Fantasy Lengths and they are the PERFECT size for my MSD. I just wanted to share them here with everyone as an alternative to having to order just normal looking lashes online and having to go through the hassle.

All I did was remove the glue that was already on them and placed them on my girl with some Alene's Tacky Glue. No cutting and they looked great!

I hope this is helpful to someone n_n

10. Oh...now for natural colors that is a GREAT idea! Next time I'm at walmart, I'll have to look for some myself!

11. That is a "GREAT" find! I'm gonna see if I can find them too. They look absolutely wonderful on your girl...thank you so much for posting this. It will save on shipping if I can find them in my local cosmetics dept.

12. Yay! Im glad it was helpful! :D

13. How cool!!! Fantastic find! Thanks so much for sharing this, and taking the time to post photos too! :) I'll absolutely be on the lookout for these in stores near me.

14. Lol... now if only I could find the dumb receipt so I can actually say how much I paid for them! I think it was about $6, but Im not completely sure.... >.<

15. I like looking at CVS, Walgreens and stuff during halloween to find the fun fantasy styled lashes. XD I don't have anyone in need right now, since the two incoming guys don't really need upper lashes, unless I decide to find some bright red ones for Tremis, but they're fun to think about putting in one at some point.

16. Thanks so much for this info and picture, am going to check my store for these. What a great find!

17. try curling them with a lashcurler first. this way it won't point down too much and make her look sleepy :D
thanks for sharing~

18. I actually did that the other day. It wasn't the same brand, but same concept. I got a starter kit of black 33's and trimmed them to the length I needed. Of course,my set were the full ones not the little sections like that. The sections were like a single lash and kind of intimitaded me actually. It's a good idea, but I used the adhesive that came with them. O.o So far it's working. OT note: putting those on pullips will make you rip someone's eyes out before you're done. Obiviously,I had a hard time. It was my first time changing eyelashes tho. The end result was well worth it.

19. I need a lashcurler. Do they make like doll sized eyelash curlers? O.o

20. It would be my suggestion to actually curl the lashes before you get them on the doll. That way you can curl them real close to the tip, so if you have to trim them, they're still curled up. And I don't think it would be too terribly difficult to use a regular person-sized lash curler on the doll's lashes, as long as you know they're glued on pretty tight. :)

21. uwaaaaaaa...i'm having experience like this with dollmore eyelashes (TxT)...
I wonder, why did they put glueon the back?...I understand it's for sticking it to the plastic palet but it's giving me trouble now...akh!...

thank's for the tips...I'll try acetone later...

22. My best find to date in terms of human eyelashes were 100% human hair ones that are meant for the corners of the eye, but are the perfect size for my RS Dai! Being human hair though, they are more expensive then Monique eyelashes meant for dolls.

My glue preference out of all 3 choices of tacky glue, elmers white and real eyelash glue is the eyelash glue. If you do the 2 coat method they stay on really well but also come off when you want them to. You need to apply a thin coat to the inside top eyelid of the doll then to the edge of the lashes, wait for both to get tacky then apply. Surgical clamp tweezers are amazing for this!

23. Well, My Mo has Been here a Week, And already, He has lost an eyelash!

By that, i mean it came out while i was changing the direction of his eyes, I think it was stuck to the eyeputty and got torn off, DX

Anyway, i still have the eyelash, i was wondering what glue to use? and whats the best technique? I have Nail Glue, Which is like...a clear, Glue that dries Really quick, Or would that damedge him? :...( Haaalp...

Oh And, I dont know if hes strung too tight, But its really difficult to budge his S hook, i cant even pull it up or anything ; - ;

24. Well first off, this is the wrong section of the forum to be asking this..
But please do NOT use nail glue! Nail glue is basically super glue, and it will not come off again without some serious work.
Most people just use white school glue (like Elmers), it works great!

25. mh, I actually dont know Where to post anything, Ive looked all over, Its too complicated ; w ;

So what about PVA? Kids craft glue?

26. Oh, Thankyou ^^

27. Yes, that is fine, it is what I used. Just get a very small paint brush, paint a layer of it in the eyelid, let it dry a bit until its tacky and attach the lash. I use the end of the paintbrush to gently push it on. Does that make sense? :XD:

28. I find that spreading white glue/PVA onto the inside of the eye is easiest with a sewing needle; I then poke the eyelash into place with the blunt end of the needle xD Hopefully this helps you? :P

29. I use the extra thick PVA tacky glue too. It's good stuff and it dries clear and you can wash it off when your bored of it :D

30. SUPER GLUE.... and when you're done with those lashes (I replace my dolls lashes annually) I just rip those bad boys right off (no harm done to my resin children)

31. I am sooo pleased that I found this thread! I have just finished a faceup on my SD Andi, and I really wanted her to have lashes! I found an old pair of purple and black ones that I bought for myself (not that I EVER worked out how to get them on me...) I am going to go put them in her now!

32. I was looking for some white glue today to attach my girl's eyelashes but I seem to be out at the moment.
I did find some rubber cement though, I was wondering if that would be a safe to use. I thought I better ask before doing something I might regret :sweat

33. ...While yes, its safe (kinda), for the resin, never expect those lashes to come off. To remove them you will have to sand them off, which will potentially alter the eye shape. Not exactly the most practical.

Just wait until you get some white school glue.

34. Don't use rubber cement. It contains acetone or a similar solvent; while acetone evaporates off layers of sprayed sealant quickly, I doubt it would evaporate as quickly off the glue, which may in turn cause damage to the faceup or resin.

35. I used rubber cement once, and while it didn't damage my doll (possibly because I'd already sprayed 3-4 coats of ZM by the time I applied them?) it was distractingly bumpy. They came off easily when I removed them the next day, at least! From what the others have said it sounds like you may be better off waiting for white glue :)

36. Wow, ok
glad I didn't do it. I'll wait and get some white glue tomorrow:)

37. Leekeworld has a product called "Eyelash Gum" that only costs $1, and seems to carry the potential of being an easy-on-easy-off eyelash adhesive. Since I'm getting some next month, when I use it I'll post how things went. OwO

38. This is late but could help other people. There is a product here in the US called "Goo Gone". When you receive the eyelashes the glue that is on them is only on there to stick the eyelashes onto the plastic packaging. This is true for doll or human lashes. It is best to remove the glue with Goo Gone before you use them. I have a big lump in one of my doll's lashes because I was lazy and just glued them in sticky. Hope that helps.

39. Thank you, thank you! Very helpful and made one of the beginning questions I had crystal clear.

40. I have been trying to put eyelash on my boy since....FOREVER! I how followed everything to a T....
-use tooth pick
-use tacky glue
-use regular glue
even when I seem to get it perfect...it fails and the eyelash doesn't stick:doh
I really dont want to pay someone to do something which could be done by me for less money
Are their any other ways to attach eyelashes without glue...or at least show me how to do it better because I am screwing up all over the place!

41. I just put eyelashes in my girl's head a week or so ago--it was super scary! Don't give up hope!

I find that using my fingers to place the eyelashes against the rim of the upper lid worked the best (better than tweezers,) but I held it in place with two toothpicks for several minutes otherwise the glue would let go and the eyelashes would spring out. I pushed the toothpicks against the main points of the eyelash that popped out the quickest and made sure that it was contacting the rim of the upper eye as much as possible as the glue dried. I also found that it's better to have the glue placed on the rim of the eyelashes, not on the rim of the eye (not sure what order you're "supposed" to do it in, but I found this worked best for me. Also, I am using clear tacky glue.

I don't know of any alternatives to the adhesives generally recommended for eyelashes :( hopefully you'll get in a groove and ge those eyelashes behaving properly soon!

42. It's possible to tape the base of the lashes up inside the head with the lashes sticking out the eye hole. One of mine came from the company that way. I find it easy enough (though yeah, it's ANNOYING) to do the tacky glue though... use a VERY small amount (maybe try the quick-grab kind, though I've used regular just fine - sometimes I let the regular sit for a minute before applying the lashes so they're not quite so wet and slidey), use tweezers and a toothpick to get them in place, and hold it there for a few minutes until it dries. You can kind of "roll" the toothpick along the base of the lashes to help press them in place, too.

The main thing is to try and get as much of the sticky that is on the lashes already (holding it to the packaging) as possible OFF before you start. Otherwise they'll stick to everything but the doll.

43. Alright thanks Anneke
i will have to give it another shot...

AmyAngel why is it annoying

44. I have a gentle (half-lidded) head so putting lashes in is a pain for me >.< If I might suggest to you my most recent (albeit still headache inducing) technique...

*I used Elmer's Clear washable glue, because it starts and dries clear and it dries thin and pliable. It's runny, though, so to each their own in that regard >>
*Never glue the whole eyelash in at once. Try half an eyelash first, or even a third. (best advice I ever got on the subject!)
*Try using a pencil or something with a wedge-shaped tip to hold the eyelash in place while it dries.

45. Just because it's fiddly, and it's easy for the lashes to slide out of place if the glue is too wet still when you try to let go of it. Most of the ones I've done lashes on are minis, so there's also the small/less room to work issue. It's not difficult, it just takes concentration and isn't a fun thing to do. It's worth it though, it's a nice finished look when they're done.

46. Just take your time, you do have to hold the little suckers in place. I blow gently and hold the lashes till the glue dries and they stick.

47. I use a needle instead of a toothpick to spread just a tiny bit of glue on the
very thin strip that holds the eyelashes together –in my experience it makes
a great difference that you wait for a bit until the glue has aired for a few minutes
(not enough to be completely dry, but enough to have formed a thin layer of “skin”).
I find that a needle picks up less glue and also sticks less than the toothpick does,
once you are holding the lashes in place to dry, which makes it easier as well.

I use human lashes though, so half the length of them is up in the eye-cavity,
which helps make the whole thing easer (for me), but also makes fitting the eyes
a pain in the gut. But it also works with average sized doll-eyelashes. I hope that helps! ^.^

48. Another problem I have is that when I do get the eyelashes in and they stay in place
his eyes push them out

...is there any way I can fix that?

49. It almost sounds as if whatever you're sticking the eyelashes with isn't adhering very well to the inside of the eyewells. I've never had a problem with eyes shifting the lashes unless the lashes weren't really stuck in place--then, yeah, as soon as I positioned the eyes, the lashes started moving all over. When that happens, it's a signal to me that it's time for some cleaning and re-lashing.

In your shoes, I would be inclined to start over completely, and make sure I have a totally clean surface for the glue to stick to. That could mean using a piece of magic eraser and/or alcohol on a cotton swab to wipe away any old eye putty residue, glue residue, or mold release that might still be lingering on the inside of the eyewells. Then I would use a drop of dishwashing liquid on a cotton swab and wash the area one last time, then use a clean wet swab to remove all trace of soap before letting the head air-dry thoroughly. I've done this when I had trouble with sliding lashes, and so far it's always solved the problem. The only trick is being super-careful so as not to damage the eyeliner or eyeshadow during the cleaning.

50. Another possibility is that you're putting the eyes in before the eyelashes have completely dried. I usually hold the eyelashes in place until they stay, and then let them set for another 15 minutes or longer until I'm sure they glue has dried. That way, when you put in the eyes, the lashes stay put.

51. Cynthia in FlintHills, thanks for the advice. (i don't usually clean his eye holes:sweat)
But wouldn't the magic eraser wipe away his face up?

Arashiko: Yeah, I pretty impatient so I'm probably not leaving it for a long enough amount of time. Its something I will have to work on.

52. For my girls and for my commissioned heads, I use this method:
After the final coat of MSC, i apply thin coat of clear enamel to make the eyeline&eyelids stand out.
then using the twizzer, i hold the eyelashes and put them in place before the enamel dries ^^
enamel dries quicker than glue, so after i've put them in place, i press them from the bottom gently with the end of twizzer,
avoiding touching the enamel.
and it works like a magic!^^
The eyelashes come off easily when you remove the faceup :) and you can even use clear nail polish if you don't have access to clear enamel.
I've tried the clear nail polish on Volks,Peakswoods,Fairyland,DIM,Leeke,Bluefairy and it was just fine!
hope it helped. :D

53. Well, that's why I mentioned being super-careful, hm? ;) But I'm talking about cleaning the inside of the eyewells--working only on the inside of his head, not on any of the painted area. I never put glue near any faceup paint, and I position the eyelashes fairly far up inside the eyewells. You may be putting the glue and positioning the eyelashes right on the edge of the eyewell, like eyeliner. In that case, of course you wouldn't want to clean the area, for fear of damaging the faceup.

FWIW, I let eyelash glue dry for at least an hour, and usually longer; I make sure I have errands to run or some other kind of work to do, so I won't be tempted to put the eyes in sooner. I want the glue to be rock-solid before I go near it with eyes or eye putty.

54. Agreeing with Cynthia on the time -- 15 minutes is probably decent but I usually put in a movie or a TV show and wait until that's over to time how long before I can put in eyes. Of course, if you have more than one doll, I find that starting up an eyelash assembly line fills the time nicely. >.> It usually takes me an hour to finagle a pair in.

If you're still having trouble, there's also the quick'n'dirty way that I use on my tinies (and sometimes my SDs when I get lazy, LOL). First, buy Mack's Silicone Ear Plugs to use as eye putty. They won't stain or melt your eyes like some company putty will. >.> Then, since they're clear, pinch off a tiny amount -- and I mean a TINY amount. You just need enough to roll a very thin worm as long as the eyelashes. Then, you guessed it, put it on the eye lashes, position in the eye well, and just -- smoosh them in place.

Just so you're aware, this method WILL NOT hold as well as glue -- you will find the eyelashes peeling out when you put your doll in a bag or change clothes. The bright side is you can just smoosh them right back in. The other thing is that if you use too much putty, when you put your eyes in, it will smear. You may have to carefully clean it off the surface of the eye. This is definitely not the recommended method, but as a stop-gap it'll do the trick.

55. How do you keep the eyelashes from sticking to each other after everything is said and done?

56. Joeyglove -- if your eyelashes are clumping together I'm guessing you're using too much glue. You only need a very small amount applied to the very base of the lashes. If one or two still stick, try using a sewing needle to separate them.

57. I found that when I glue the "lash" part near the base of the lashes to the lid instead of trying to glue the base itself, it works better for me. Not sure how to explain other than the base part would be inside of the eye socket while the lashes lay on the underneath part of the lid. Or be sure to get rid of all the "sticky" glue that may already be on the lashes as I find that impedes the drying process and for some reason makes it hard to stick properly.

58. White glue didn't work for me. :/ I couldn't even get them to stay with me holding them. I guess I'll ask for help at my next meetup.

59. I recently glued in some eyelashes for my friend. their ones that you would use for humans, just cut in half. They, to me, give us realistic edge and volume. I used Elmer's School Glue for the glue and those cute little plastic pirate swords you can find at Party Galaxy or your local party supply store for cheap in bulk. They are perfect for applying the eyelashes due to the pointed tip and flexibility. I tend to change out my kids lashes' every 6 months or so and/or when I find a pair I have to see on Aria.
