Eye Alignment and Human Expressions

    1. This was SUPER helpful as well as funny! Thanks so much for the advice! I will defiantly apply this :)

    2. I enjoyed the tutorial. It made me exam the eyes of my dolls to see if the placement was correct. I feel that more confident about placing eyes.

    3. Great tutorial, eye placement makes a huge difference.

    4. This is a such a wonderful and helpful explanation! Honestly, I had never thought about the reasoning behind the eyes' positioning, it makes complete sense! Thanks for the information, and help.

    5. I'm reading this now for probably the third time over a few years. Such a helpful tutorial. Thank you!

    6. Its amazing just how much eye position can make or break the whole look/demeanor of your doll. I'm not even close to kiddin, I nearly ran away from the computer when the murderous photo happened ;)

    7. I never knew this! I'll deff keep it as reference now for my dolls, as well as drawing :)

    8. This is so useful!!!! Immediately gives my doll more character!! THANK YOU :)

    9. Yeah, half the bedroom eyes dolls I see have that problem. You need your pupil, people!

      Glad to help!

      You're welcome!
You're welcome. I try to be a little funny, since humor helps people remember things.

Thank you! I'm glad it helped you.

      It does, doesn't it? Thanks!

I thought telling people Why the eyes make certain looks might help them understand eye positions better. You're welcome!

      Oh wow, really? Awesome!

It's amazing how strong most people's instincts remain in response to expressions, isn't it?

Oh, it certainly helps with drawing, too. I learned all this back in high school when I started drawing people and their eyes.

      You're welcome!

    10. THank you this was really helpful I had no idea how to do this and my doll just wasn't looking right to me (Srry for pun) I got it after the second try! Thank you!

    11. I'm always glad to hear it helps people! You're welcome!

    12. These are awesome pointers Rosslyn, everyone should read this :)

    13. I found this really helpful... :) thanks!

I also wonder about tips for setting the eye back from the socket, because when my girl arrived her eyes were really sunk back but i prefer them closer to her eyelids... I don't know which is considered more realistic

    14. I always wondered why some dolls looked a bit funny. I guess it really is all in the eyes. Thanks for all the tips! Now that I know the eyes are one of the most important features, which eyes do you prefer for a more realistic lookl? Glass, acrylic ect.

    15. hehe this is a fun tutorial :D

    16. Thank you!

Well if you look at real people, our eyeballs fit snug into our eyelids, thank goodness, or they'd rattle about. Properly fitted eyes should be right up as close/far into the eye socket as they can get. Thanks for reading!

Yep, lots of dolls arrive from companies with some of the problems I've outlined, and people just don't know how to fix it or notice it sometimes.
As for the most realistic eyes, it really depends. I prefer something with varied lines in the iris, a touch of color variation, and a certain depth or shine. I have expensive Soom silicone eyes in some of my dolls that will track you as you move, they're so well-made, but then again a $12 pair of purple Glastic acrylics are what another doll wears, and they have more beauty and depth to them than many glass eyes I've seen. It all depends on the company's production technique and style of eye.

      Thanks! :)

    17. Ah! Very nicely done. Thank you for clarifying these different aspects ^^

    18. You're welcome! (Also, eulalia.)

    19. Thanks! I just looked at the Soom eyes and oh my! They are beautiful. Is it the double dome or the single dome that tracks?

    20. The double dome eyes track better. Just be sure your doll has deep eyes sockets- sometimes eyes domed too high are tricky to "seat" into some sockets.

    21. Thank you so much Rosslyn for taking time to explain all this to a "newbie". I really appreciate your advice!

    22. Glad to help! Everyone was new once! I got into this back in 2008, but I was definitely a newbie then!

    23. wow this is a great tip, thank you so much. I'm looking forward to photographing my girl when she arrives and this helps so much. :)

    24. You're welcome! I got into photography through dolls, and it's great fun!

    25. Great tutorial, I don't want my dolls to look "murderous "! Thanks

    26. Great tip and explanation :)

    27. Hi, I'm a bjd dolly newbie and I just want to say thank you, this clears up one very important aspect of bjd customization!

    28. Excellent tutorial, it will helping me to improve on my dolls photo shoot. Thank you :sweat

    29. You're welcome! It's an easy thing to fix.
      Thank you!

You're very welcome! I like to be helpful.

You're welcome! I should try to do more about alignment and so on but some of it I am not sure how to explain.

    30. Great tips. Thanks! :)

    31. Thanks for the tutorial and tips! Stella's a cutie even when she's looking murderous or psychotic XD

    32. thank you, great tips.

    33. Thank you so much! This is super helpful!!

    34. I've been here a while and this is the first time that I actually see this tutorial. I usually just wing it when aligning my doll's eyes. I keep turning and twisting them until they look natural (enough), I never really searched for a logic behind the whole eye thing. But low and behold, here it is! Thank you very much for pointing out the obvious that I failed to see. I'll be sure to use your tutorial when I obtain new eyes for my girl.

Do you have any tips for sculpts that have sleepy or droopy eyes? I assume it's the same principle but I'd rather ask more experienced dolly owners. :)

    35. Great Graphics! Thanks a lot for this tutorial. The comment section is also worthy of looking at as well :D

    36. Nice tutorial. *runs off to check dolls' eyes*

    37. This was so, so helpful, thank you!! I'm reading and doing it as we speak ^^

    38. Thanks for sharing your enlightening info! The eyes are the windows to the soul and it can sometimes be hard to get the look right! Definitely bookmarking this for quick reference!

    39. This is a very well made tutorial! Thanks a million!

    40. Some really useful tips! Thanks a bunch :)

    41. You're welcome!

You're welcome- And thanks, Stella says Hi.

      Welcome!

      Glad it was helpful!

It's basically the same. You need to make sure the pupil- black dot part- is not mostly covered by the eyelid. At some point I should really do a sequel to this tutorial with some more info... Thanks!

Hehe there have been some fun comments! You're welcome.

      Thank you!

Oh good, I'm glad it was useful!

      Thank you!

      Aw, thank you!

      You're welcome!

    42. This was super helpful. I'd love to try different things in a photostory :D!

    43. This was a really great tutorial. My doll always looks like her eyes are going off in different places. Lol. I will definetly try this out!

    44. Thanks for this great tutorial, it's really helpful. :)

    45. lol, im so glad i found this tutorial because my doll looks like she's going to slay me anytime now hahaha! thanks for this! awesome! trying now! <3

    46. Nice tutorial very useful !

    47. Thanks! Ive been asked to do one on getting both eyes to look in the same direction but other than,"Point them both in the same direction" I have no idea how to explain how I do that.

      You're welcome!

Oh we can't have that! No more angry dolls! :)

      Thank you!

    48. Thank you so much for your time to share this. insightful explanations.

    49. Ahhh this is helpful even as I've always placed the eyes this way (a whole lot upper behind the eyelids for it's actually my personal interest), but most people don't notice this and like you said it makes the dolls become creepy somehow. I definitely need to show my friends this tutorial. Thank you.

    50. I laughed pretty hard at the "murderous" look, mostly because I find myself doing that when I'm about to scold my friends haha. This tutorial is definitely helpful and informative since it gives the "why" we move the eyes a certain way.

One thing I noticed someone else do with their dolls was that they placed the eyes so they almost appeared cross-eyed. I thought it was fascinating since the owner clearly had a good eye for realistic photo shots, and the more I stared at the doll, the more it seemed to actually have a focused look. It seemed like the owner purposely placed the dolls eyes like that in the chance that should you stand in a certain spot in front of the doll, the dolls line of view intersected and focused on you. But other from that spot, the doll seemed to be endearingly cross-eyed.

    51. You're very welcome!

You're welcome! yeah the eye placement is crucial- a little past the eyelid but not too much or they look like they're passing out.

Thanks! It is true that focused eyes are actually tilted ever so slightly inward. Too much, and they appear crossed, but if you only point both eyes parallel into the distance, they will not appear focused at all, but "spacey", because they are staring into space and not at a point in front of them.

    52. I'll have to try moving the eyes around in my dolls when I finally get the chance to place them it. It should be fun making them have strange expressions with just their eyes!

    53. Thank you for this thread! the "murder eyes" tip has solved a LOT of problems for one of my dolls now, oh my gosh XD

    54. Thank you! It was very helpful! Now I know why dolls with a pupil under the upper eyelids give me creeps.

    55. Great tips, thanks :)

    56. I'm like 2.5 years into the hobby now and this is STILL my biggest struggle, I haven't even started playing with side-eye or anything other than just trying to get a straight-ahead, non-murderous, non-wall-eyed look in all my dolls. For a long time I'd just wait til I was at a meet and make other people position them for me xD

I'd love to eventually see a tutorial on other eye positions =D

    57. This is a really helpful tutorial! While my dolls now have less creepy expressions,I'm having trouble not making them cross-eyed! Would it be possible to do a quicky tutorial on focusing the dolls eyes?

      UPDATE:
Yesterday I was trying to get the eyes right in my sister's peaks woods girl... But her iris is too big to not tough both top and bottom eyelid! She still looks pretty startled... but I guess it's less manic than she was...

    58. Thank you so much for all this help. I have my first BJD and the thing that i struggle with is eye placement. by the time i push them in the back it's hard to get that perfect setting. Sometimes she looks like she is scared! I want that dreamy look.

    59. Movable eyes is one of the best things about bjds!

      Oh good!

      Yeahhh they do that. XD

      You're welcome!

It does take practice, yeah. I do need to try some other tutorials..

I am going to try to make some other tutorials shortly but part of the trouble there is that I do a lot of it by just years of art and knowing how eyes usually look. I'm not sure how to teach it exactly...

      Glad this helps!

      You're welcome!

    60. Thanks for this! Very helpful for my first doll
