Excited Noob

Jun 3, 2023

    1. Hello everyone! I’m brand new to this hobby. I just ordered my first doll part yesterday. It’s an Asai Berial head. I fell in love with his mouths. :D

I’m really into the creepier/fantasy dolls that I’ve seen so far and so far lean heavily towards the male dolls. Jing (Five eye) from Miracle Doll and the A-body-07 centaur from Doll Chateau are my two absolute faves right now. Cain from Dika Dolls was my favorite before I found those two. I’ll have to save up for all these boys, but I’m excited to get started.

I’m looking forward to getting better at sewing, sculpting and painting. I’ve dabbled a bit with all three in the past, but my imagination has really been fired up thinking about all the fun ways to customize my dolls. I love to write stories and love the idea of bringing some of my characters out into the real world.

I look forward to joining this community and meeting other people that are into this art form! Any advice for a complete noob is absolutely welcome and appreciated.

    2. You are going to have a blast making stuff for your dolls. And you picked a beautiful head to start with, loving his teeths :kitty2 What are your plans for him? Have you picked out a body or bust stand for him? This hobby tends to have long wait times so you have a lot of time to dream up and plan before he comes home. It can be fun to make him some welcome home gifts while you wait, make a wishlist of things you'd like to get or make him later, or writing him some kind of backstory to help fuel your imagination :3nodding: You will be so excited when he finally reaches your hands. Be sure to show him off! And welcome to the hobby! :cheer

    4. Thanks @Novalyna I appreciate the welcome. I’m hoping to attach him to the A-body-07 centaur body from Doll Chateau. I had some questions about the body though so I’m waiting on a reply from the company through Alice’s Collection. I’m looking forward to the challenge of making clothes for a body that’s half human and half horse. I hadn’t thought about making him anything before he came home, but I have some cute ideas for some accessories now that you mention it!

I like morally gray/bad guys, so he’ll definitely be the dark type. I’ve been sketching ideas for colors but haven’t settled on anything yet. I’d like to do a natural looking faceup and realistic horse body, but it will be my first, so we’ll see. :sweat

I will definitely show off his pretty face when he arrives!

    6. I think he's going to look great on that centaur body. That is how I imagined him when you brought up that body, but wasn't sure if you wanted it for this head or another doll. He will look great! AC is very helpful in getting you the information that you need in my experience :3nodding: How exciting! It's going to be super cool to see what you come up with for your centaur baddie! :wiggle

Face ups are challenging, but you can redo them over and over until you're happy, so I encourage you to try it and read up on all the great tips from customizers here :whee: Not only regarding doll-safe materials and techniques, but be sure to read up on respiratory protection while you do face ups! It was something that I didn't know I should consider when I was new to BJDs, but you will be glad you took those few extra steps to protect your body while making them beautiful :thumbup

    7. Thanks! I sure hope so. From what I can tell with measurements for both the head and the body, it should work, but since this is my first, there’s a little part of me that can’t help but worry. Either way, I’ll find him a good body. :3nodding:

I have a respirator I use for when I’m making spray paint art, so I should be safe, but I sincerely appreciate the warning. I’ve been reading and watching every tutorial possible and it’s so interesting to see that everyone still has their own way of doing things while also following a lot of the same steps. I always think, “Okay, I’ve got it down.” Then I watch another video and realize there’s ANOTHER way to do something or a different type of material to use! It’s exciting how many possibilities there are, and I’m always surprised how different dolls can end up looking even if they’re the same sculpt. The possibilities are literally endless!*_*

    10. welcome to the community. I'm starting too, but I read that fairyland has launched a special sale with sculptures in gray and purple, and they also make fantasy bodies with animal parts, maybe you'd be interested in taking a look at their website.

    16. Thanks @unkillablesweetroll I’ve changed my initial plans for my first doll. Still waiting on his head to reach me and I now have a body on layaway. I don’t know how everyone handles the long waits! :aeyepop:

    17. It's VERY hard. I think that's why we have the waiting rooms lol it's sooooooo hard to wait!

    18. Welcome! I also really love Doll Chateau - their strange, stylized proportions are so fun. I hope you post lots of pictures of your face ups and other doll crafts for us to enjoy.
