She's finished! This week was a mad dash to finish her so that I could submit her pictures to a magazine challenge. Most of us are familiar with the story of Eve: made from Adam's rib to be his companion and given the Garden of Eden to enjoy as long as she did not eat the fruit from the in the middle of the garden. All was going well until the snake told Eve that if she ate the fruit from the tree, she would not die, but she would be like the angels with the knowledge of good and evil. Eve decided to eat from the tree and to give the fruit to Adam. My Eve is a woman with snake-like attributes: scales on her brow ridges and lower back, and reptilian eyes. When I decided to make a doll based on the Biblical Eve, I wanted to represent the snake in the garden, but I personally do not believe in a source of Evil that is outside of ourselves. I think it paints a simplistic view of human nature and potential. So I decided to make the snake part of Eve in the same way that I think the desire to explore and push the boundaries of what is allowed is an intrinsic part of human nature. I really like that from some angles her face looks innocent and kind of dreamy and from others she looks more reptilian and sly. Unfortunately, I had a hard time actually catching the sly expressions on camera. (Think she was doing it on purpose!) Her costume is made of fig leaves cut out of tooling leather. My partner in art crime made the template and coached me in her technique for molding and painting them. I love the way the costume turned out. I still cannot believe I painted those leaves. I think fairies did it... while I was holding the paint brush... or something. Eve herself is entirely poured wax. Her wig is undyed silk roving.
