Aug 18, 2011

    1. EDit- parts unstrung (i broke my baby's wings a few months ago moving house :...( will need to make new ones - - when i can find the motivation)
      _______________________________________________________

I'm making a giant dragon type merman using Soom's epidos' top half >_>
still need to work on the joints and detail...but so far - at least its coming along (i started at the beginning of the year and left it for months :P Gotta love polymer clay <--doesnt dry out at all:fangirl:)

made from Sculpey living doll and cernit so far
the tail measure over 60cm i think - i wasted so much clay tweaking it until it sorta curved like i wanted. <--had absolutely no idea what i was doing

got the epoxie putty and now starting to think about painting
i painted it white so far just to see what it'll look like - when i finally decide on a color scheme i like - i'll prob brush over the paint with transparent resin mixture but until then - i'm letting it peel ^^'

and in all these photos - he's not being supported by anything except himself. YAY!

I figured if butt switching works - i can do a minor mod for him to sit properly

      and .....it works =D
      [IMG]

sadly he has a big hole in his butt
      [IMG]

but side sitting is ok now X)

    2. That's a lot of clay indeed. :ablink:
Interesting work, I like the pattern on the tail.

    3. That is impressive! I think that it looks very good, very much in proportion with the whole merman/dragon idea. I really love his tail fins, as well - very cool idea making them look like feathers! I can't wait to see more. Will you be adding locking mechanisms for the joints, so that he can "stand on his knees" or be more upright?

    4. ehhh....locking mechanisms? i dont think i can pull that off - i literally one day decided to buy a whole bunch of clay stuff one day an make myself a tail.........its safe to say - i have close to zero experience in sculpting ^^'.

    5. wonderful work you have really created such a textured tail at first glance i thought it was made from fabric with clay to the ends but wow clay all the way through fantasic work

    6. wow, looks great, dragon is closer to naga than anything else i've seen :3 Locking tabs -would- be neat, maybe instead you could do something like what Fairyland did for the Puki merfolk, by making a decorative stand like coral or kelp or something.

    7. Oooh that looks awesome :o
      I like so far :D
Please show more when he is done

    8. love it! You're making me feel ultra lazy I can't even get through a simple tail to be added and here you are entirely new body portion of body!

    9. That's clay?

      @_@ Gorgeous!!

    10. This is amazing! Great work!

    11. That...that is so...oh my goodness that looks so cool. > o < <3 I really can't wait to see it finished. * o *

    12. your job is very amazing !!
      :o

    13. Amazing detail on the tail! Wondering what color or painting technique you plan on using? So cool!:o

    14. Just realised that he can actually kneel by himself - need to sand the area that becomes exposed tho
      photo added above! =)

    15. That is amazing! My mind is boggled.
I actually tried making a mermaid tail a while back, but I couldn't get the joints to function and not break. How did you manage it?

    16. It's simply amazing!!!I love also the scales..impressive!

    17. I think that looks great :o, amazing job!

    18. This is fantastic. Your detailing work is wonderful, especially for someone with little sculpting experience. I love the articulation you've created. I've always liked longer "mermaid" tails. They look more exotic. :) Good luck with the finishing steps!

    19. The details look awesome, could you take some closer pics of the tail? Are there jewels embedded along the back? So cool!

    20. Great details! May I ask how you did the scales? I absolutely love the texture on them.

    21. Wow!!!

That is one impressive mod. Can't wait to see the finish look.

    22. I'm using sculpey living doll - which is suppose to be pretty hard and chip resistent....suppose to be >_> - so far its good for large parts

there's a dragon scale tool i bought off ebay...but that would have taken forever so i used a texture sheet that was meant for cupcake icing......i'm serious. then i rolled it in a pasta machine to flatten the clay. - then shoved it on XD

and yes those are jewels -synthesised jewels...they can handle oven heat

    23. That's awesome!

    24. My gooooooodness, this is so amazing!

    25. Nice scale work, and the gems will add an elegant touch... can't wait to see more. Your endevor will certainly pay off in a magnificent way.

    26. OAO Wow, that's amazing. What a project!

    27. what the ? how did you do that it's amazing! :fangirl:

    28. 12 interlocking pieces and still fins to come? I'm soooo impressed with what you did. My daughter recently received a tail from PeaPod and it has so many pieces but looks very similar to yours. Love those scales.

      Well done!

How's the fins coming along? Can't wait to see them.

    29. WHOA. WHOA. THIS IS AMAZING. My head hurts.
I cannot WAIT to see how this turns out!

    30. Oh my gosh, this is amazing! And so well done, too :aheartbea

    31. Wow, I am completely rendered speechless. A fabulous execution of an amazing idea!

    32. following this! That's absolutely amazing!

    33. wow your work is soo detailed and i love the crystals that you have added too. looking fanatstic

    34. Love the thought that cupcake decorating is bjd size! My first thought also was that it was stuffed fabric, but clay will be such a better texture being merged with the resin body. The scale proportion is excellent!
Good luck with the rest of the project, can't wait to see where your vision leads you.

    35. OMG, I love this, thanks for posting the close ups :) The jewels are amazing! I can't wait to see how you decide to color the tail. I'm guessing airbrushing it? What sort of colors do you want to use? This is a great project, and it's making me want to buy the planetdoll mermaid I was just looking at the other day :P

    36. this is simply creative, and amazing, well realized, you did an amazing work really, cannot wait to see more!

    37. I've never aired brush in my life - but apparently that'll be the best idea....or i'll acrylic-can spray it first - then worry bout the rest ^^'
i cant even bring myself to start the fins >_>
(painting experience >_> does blank coloured bedrooms count?)
I wanted a peapod doll mermaid tail but couldnt bring myself to pay so much for something so tiny QAQ -that and i wanted a large mermaid---
My sis says its creepy. One of my best friends also says she's freaked out by the scales -that he looks like a snake TTATT

    38. I don't think he looks creepy at all, silly girls! I love how you've feathered his tail fin. And second the wish for a planetdoll mermaid of my own...
Good luck with the painting. I love dressing the dolls but have yet to bravely blush even a normal human bjd! :0

    39. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!
He looks amazing! Like, seriously amazing. Like, homg amazing.\

      AMAZING job. Truely.

    40. added my fins/wings >_> ............

    41. that's amazing!!!!!! the sculpting is so beautiful :D
I am most impressed! can he stand?

    42. Oh man, I'm getting a real Quetzalcoatl vibe from this guy~! I love him, the work and detail on him is so impressive! I can't wait to see him finished.

    43. i dont think he can stand on his fins?...he can kneel by himself though - the second photo set sorta shows how much he can keep himself upright

    44. well that's what I meant by "stand" :sweat I just wasn't sure whether you were holding him or if he could keep the pose himself on the pictures :3

    45. Beautiful wings/fins! I love how much detail you have in this. You may be a beginner, but I think you definitely found a hidden talent.

Oooh, and he kneels! So cool!

    46. cool reminds me of soom doll

    47. he's looking super awesome!

I second the apoxie sculpt. it's very, very strong. Polymer clays can't handle the stress of being handled or having tension on them for a long period of time. they'll eventually break or crack.

Apoxie sculpt has actually been used to fill in missing bones in dinosaur skeletons... so it's a bit stronger.

    48. wow love the wings you've added!

    49. thanks to
      zomjirate and myouyu
I'll try apoxie sculpt and see how it goes X)

    50. CLAY?! My mind! It has been blown! You did an awesome job!

    51. I absolutely love the style of wings you created. They are absolutely gorgeous and so elegant. And *gasp* they are mobile too! For 'having no idea what you are doing', your Epidos' new tail is looking amazing coupled with some nice engineering.

Can't wait to see what you're going to be doing next to him! :)

    52. I love the detail you did on this! Good job!

    53. The tail and feathers look amazing :O

    54. Wow. That is just... Dang!

On the top-most joint of the tail - what if you made it look more like a normal - but really wide - single hip socket. You wouldn't necessarily have to give him a butt, but having a more open socket might create more room for the top joint to rest and balance on the second joint when he is in a sitting position. You could also round the top of the second joint - like a hip ball - so it fits smoothly into the bigger socket.

    55. Oh my gosh, that is beautiful. You've managed to acomplish what I've invisioned ever since I first layed eyes on a doll.

    56. This is looking gorgeous-- love the textured scales and the feathery way you've done the fins! Can't wait to see him finished. I'm surprised you're new to this, you're great at it! Keep it up.

I did not know that about the dinosaur skeleton use! How very cool. :D

    57. wah? I wouldnt know where to start Q_Q. I didnt get any of that at all (my mind isnt visually comprehending wat you just said.
Thanks for the suggestion though =D

    58. That is amazing. I like the feather details, very well done. Its nice how it just flows into the body and doesn't look like a add on at all. like he was meant to be that way. great job. :)

    59. I badly wish this was for sale XD I've longed for a "naga"-ish doll for a while now XD curse you and your amazing skills! <3
