So I've been trying to create boots/slippers/something for my one human-footed doll with...mixed success. I'm learning things, but in the meantime I'm making a lot of failed experiments and I would really like to get some photos of her where she just has some dang foot coverings that look good. A wrinkle to this: my dolls' setting is a fantasy one, which makes finding boots apparently way harder. I've seen all of one shop so far that sells then, so figured I'd see if people have suggestions on where to find more fantasy oriented footwear.
I admit, my elves/fae wear whatever shoes I can find that fit them. Lots of boots. They don't really look fantasy but I guess riding boot is a good description for them. Functional over fashion.
This is a major problem I have with the boots I keep seeing-they involve tying tiny laces. I have a horrible time tying tiny things, so laces are something I'd rather avoid.
If you want to look for fantasy-wear but don't like laces, you could look into footwear that is styled after traditional shoes from China. Some of them might not be the right look if your fantasy world is inspired by European cultures, but they look elegant and come in a variety of shapes and colors. I tend to look for shoes on Legenddoll because they have the most variety out of the dealers I've found, but there's also Stacey's Pink Ocean and Moonlight BJD House though those can tend to skew towards SD and bigger for shoes. Here's a pair of boots from Legend Doll that are more like riding boots, while these are sorta piratey and don't have laces either. There's more like the riding boots, too, but they tend to come in black. I've had a lot of success with them, though, and they don't look out of place with my fantasy kids.
If laces are a purely functional issue, I can assure you that most laced doll boots come with a zipper at the side or back.
I like the plain black riding boots, though I noticed there's no length listing for the foot part of the boot. Do you have a measurement? That's handy to know. The ones I'd been looking at that were specifically elven had no zippers, just laces.
I haven't bought those specific boots, but if you create an account you should be able to ask Legenddoll what the measurements are either through email or by commenting on the listing.
I ended up making my own boots partially because aesthetics and partially because time and yeah, the tiny laces are kind of fiddly to go with. I think I'm going to try riding boots for my next experiment with boots.
Lomi has a few boot patterns in her archive. There's this old Viking style short boot on Deviant Art. They have several other shoe and boot patterns. (You'll need a DA account to download.) This DA tutorial is for humans, but it's easily adapted to dolls. I think boot patterns 2, 5, and 7 at the bottom would work nicely for fantasy boots. I also found a medieval shoe making book someone scanned in.
I may need to try the short boot using some kidskin, as it looks like that kind of super thin leather would work well with it. I ended up my making own boots out of suede, but I'm going to keep that DA tutorial in mind for future attempts, as it's interesting to compare the pattern I made to what they have there.
