Modification Elf Ears Piercing

Dec 2, 2022

    1. This might be a silly question but I've never pierced a dolls ears (from what I can see, the popular method is to either glue a stud on the ear with Elmer's glue/craft glue or using a small drill to pierce it properly) and my question is with thinner resin (ie elf ears) how would you do that safely without it breaking the resin? For additional context, the doll I'm looking to pierce is a Resinsoul Lian. I couldn't find a lot of information on this outside of a hobby friend that was able to do this on a head I bought from them and used wire for earrings.

    2. Probably not qualified to reply since I’ve never done this myself, but for ear piercings I’ve seen people use a pin vice- basically a hand-turned drill with a veeeery small drill bit: pin vice drill - Google Shopping

You’d most likely want to secure the head in place with some sort of clamp setup to make sure it doesn’t move, and then slowly go at it while wearing proper PPE for resin dust. If you could find an electric drill that could take tiny bits, that may work as well as long as you go slowly and don’t push on the tool. You’ll definitely want to know the gauge of wire you’ll be using ahead of time to make sure there’s no gapping, since gapping doesn’t happen when real people pierce their ears.

    3. Plce something like a BIG lump of blue-tac behind the ear for it to have something to rest on so any pressure from the drilling won't be pushing the ear back, would be my plan

    4. That's very helpful!! That's honestly very smart with knowing the gauge of wire ahead of time, would I just compare it to the tip of the drill bit?

    5. That's so smart!! The ears are part of the doll so I'm not too scared about the ears being pushed back, more that I'm worried the drill bit will be too close to the edge of the ear or the resin will be too thin and it'll just snap under! Unsure if this is a thing that would happen but I've had that happen with dolls of different material so I'm a bit scared!

    6. The drill bits will probably be labeled by size (at least electric drill bits are, so I'm assuming it's the same with a pin vice), so if you're also buying wire you can compare sizes ahead of time. If you already have wire and don't know the gauge, do your best to measure it and I'm sure there will be a pin vice kit that comes with several drill bits in a range of sizes similar to what you might need. You can always do a test by poking the different sized bits through a piece of paper and seeing how the wire fits through them. Just remember that if you're unsure, it's always better to start with a smaller bit and then increase the size if the wire doesn't fit through!

    7. Thank you so so much! I wouldn't have ever thought about that trick with the paper but I'll definitely try that when I get her! Tysm again :3nodding:

    8. i definately want to try to pierce my dolls ears too but the idea intimidates me far too much, hope it works out wel for you!
