Effects of White Balance

May 1, 2006

    1. Here is a good example of what can happen when you leave your White Balance on auto, V.S. manually setting it.

Both pictures where taken quite close to the doll, using the flash. Yes you heard right, the flash was on. I was no more than a foot and a half away also. The diffence is suttle, but manually setting it really brings out the nice skin tone, and the colors in her face.

The left image is with the white balance on 'Auto'
The Right image, and the last one is the result of 'manually setting'

    2. I never knew what "white balance" was for. Now I will have to experiment! thanks for posting this.

    3. That makes a big difference. The pic on the left is more washed out and the right pic has warm tones and more depth.
Thank you for sharing that information!

    4. Ah! This thread is kinda old, but that was helpful. I've been trying to photograph Star Anise, who has the luts beauty white skintone and it's really hard to get his skintone to look right...I'm going to go mess with my white balance now...:)

    5. I'll be able to help you too at the meet Jess also. :)

    6. Ok, that would be awesome!

    7. I've been messing with my white balance under indoor lights without a flash. I haven't been able to get away from the evil yellow coloring that indoor lights gives a picture. *scowl* Too bad it's always dark out by the time I'm done working or I would just go outside.

    8. On my camera, there's a way to set custom white balance that helps a LOT with the yellow. I don't know if yours will have this function or not. But you basically need to photograph a sheet of white paper in the spot where you plan to photograph your dolls. The paper needs to fill the whole of the frame. You can then specify for this to be used as the custom white balance.

    9. Ah-ha I just found where it talks about this in my camera manual. I'll have to play with it tonight. I've found the switch to digital to be much more difficult than I'd anticipated. I have a Pentax DSLR and I'm pretty happy with the camera but it takes a lot more work for me to get the pictures I was used to getting with my Canon SLR.
