Ah! I've finally added some detail to my face sculpt, but I've hit a road block. I can't make the lips! I'm havign a lot of trouble! Does anyone have any tips? Everything I come up makes it look like a gorilla rather than human. Any ideas on how to make natural looking lips would be really helpful. I'm not a professional...I was never good with making 3-d things! I'm really happy with how it came out so far *since i can't sculpt anything* and I don't want to ditch this project, the mouth is holding me up though! Thanks to anyone who can help! *It looks much different now that I've finished the nose and added more of chin to it. Original Post: I finally picked up some sculpey and decided to mess around with it to tie me over until I can actually afford a BJD. It's not too great, he/she is still missing a mouth and ears, and the nose isn't completely done yet. I'm still messing around with the eyes too. I know it doesn't look too great, but I'm quite happy for not having too much experience before hand. Exscuse the picture quality, my camera is really old, and I'm too lazy to get my dad's camera. A lot of detail is going to be put on the nose and mouth area eventually. I really want to create a head that is somewhat of a cross between Heath+El+hugo+f16... ops: I need to keep dreaming!
Your doll head is fairly even and smooth. When you do the mouth, you may want to add a bit more chin, too, because he looks a bit like he's all nose at the moment. I like the eye sockets, and he's actually got cheekbones! likes cheekbones. Ann in CT
If you can ignore the teeth, this might help to explain. http://www.lewisgoldsteinartanddesign.com/SculptingTutorialFS.htm Otherwise, try googling for face-sculpting tips etc.
Ooh that's a neat tutorial. That's not quite how I do it, but the way I do it, its really hard NOT to get a kissy face XD. Thanks for that link!
Indeed! XD it's aggrivating too when you know exactly what you want but it just comes out like kissy lips!
My advice is to try scupting a study first a bit larger than you plan for your doll. Your head is very small and that in itself is a big challenge on top of learning to sculpt. its kinda hard to explain the shape of the lips ,but if they look apelike chances are you have two stacked worm shapes or just curled out edges ducklike. Taper the corners of the mouth to a point ending in line under just before the iris inner edge then use a ball stylus to push in the mouth corners lightly. Wider for smiling and tinier for some anime looks. The lower lip fits under the upper rather overlapped, not closing even like two closed doors the lower should be pushed back farther. Like one door closes slightly on top of the other. This is because the jaw is set back to hinge open.I hope that makes some sense. Nita
Thank you so much! Although, which tool is the ball stylus? Sorry, I'm not very familiar with names. Do you add the lips on, or do you sculpt them out of the actuall head? I'm wondering if I should start over *since the head is too small to fit a wig anyway* and then maybe instead of adding pieces of clay on to make the lips, just sculpt them out of the head. What do you suggest?? Thank you again!
The ball stylus is a small tool with a metal ball on each end. They come in differnt sizes. I use one that has a ball the size of a poppy seed the other ball maybe a pin head. its one of my most useful sculpting tools. You can add clay anyway you wish ,but some ways are more productive or work better for certain people. I add the entire mound of the mouth and then push it to form the shapes. Some people add the lower lip then the upper. The reason I dont do that is because it takes much more smoothing of the seams and fiddling and seems less intuitive for me and my work style. Nita
Thank you! That was really helpful. Out of all the tools I have, I don't have a ball stylus, but I shall be sure to get one soon! Thank you for all the information and tips, they will be really helpful! Thanks!
I found another tutorial that might help. I've not tried this method before. http://www.hanniesarris.nl/web/index.php?page=sculpting-a-fairy&lang=eng
thank you for the link! That is very helpful as well! * my mom accidentaly ran over my project with my brother's wheelchair. So i have to start over again, but this will be quite helpful I think! *that ok since It was too small and no wigs fitted it!
I was practicing lips, too, and came up with some funny faces XD http://www.livejournal.com/users/cheshiretiffy/277726.html That first one, especially XD I was kind of following the fairy tutorial that I linked a couple replies up.
lol! I love working on the floor....Literally, everything that doesn't involve using a PC *except for eating* is done on the floor...I had it on a platform though to avoid that from happening....but when my mom turned my brother wheelchair, his flootplate knocked it off and then she accidentally ran over it because she didn't see it >< that's ok. the head wasn't big enough to fit a wig anyway. it was actually pretty funny to see it's whole face all messed up. ops:

my doll lips tend to be pouty... i first fill in the chin... then make a small bulge or hump where the lips will go... then using a sharp pointed thing... i carved a curvy line at the center (the line of the mouth)... then i just modified ...errr..its really kinda hard to explain... this technique works for me... http://www.google.com/translate?u=h...howto/index.html&langpair=ja|en&hl=en&ie=UTF8
I think it's easiest to sculpt lips by pulling a lot of clay to the lip area, using a pencil to draw a line separating two halves, to shape those two halves, and then push them back together on the face in the way you want them :3 (That's the technique I use for realistic sculpting, but I think it'd apply for BJDs, too. Did this make sense? )
That fairy tutorial was really helpful, and that face looks great! I'm totally bookmarking that. :3 Thanks!
I'd draw a line to separate the two lips, into two separate parts. Sort of like an open mouth? and then I shape the lips by themselves, and push the top lip down, and the bottom lip up into the shape I want :3 Sorry if it's hard to understand, it's complicated to explain
