Edit. Before and After.

May 13, 2010

    1. So, when I was editing my photos, I wondered how many of us edits our photos!
Please post pics of Before and After the edits! :3

      Here's one of mine.
Before - As you can see, very dark and yellowy.

      After - Much better!

      Another one.
      Before -
      [IMG]

      After -
      [IMG]

    2. I almost always edit. Usually it's fairly minor lighting issues, eye brightening, etc -- minor stuff, but I do like to play around in photoshop sometimes.

    3. [IMG]

Most of the time I'm too lazy... but every once in a while, I get really inspired. lol :sweat I do love how they turn out though after some photoshop, even though I am a complete noob.

    4. I always edit my shots ;3 sometimes it's just levels, curves and sharpness but I'll usually play around with the colours too. This is a good example of my typical before and after:

    5. I try not to over edit things, but I tend to be anal about details! Most of my editing work is done on the raw file in lightroom, then the finishing touches and tweaking is done in photoshop. I don't like when things look TOO over worked-- I feel like if you have to spend hours and hours working on a single photograph to make it look right, there's probably something fundamentally wrong with it composition-wise that's actually bugging you, and not the editing itself!

      before -> after

    6. I'm going to have to beg to differ there. While there's nothing wrong with leaving images largely untouched I don't think there's anything wrong with heavier editing either. It's an artistic choice. Personally speaking when I take my doll photos I'm not out to create something that's as close to life as possible but rather to communicate an idea visually or to just create something visually appealing, sometimes that means editing a photo in such a way to create a look that can't be created in camera, such as replicating a cross-processed look or adjusting colours to suit the mood you're going for.
You could think of photos in the same way someone might think of a drawing, the RAW is a sketch, sketches need tidying up, inking and colouring and similarly RAWs (which are designed to be digital negatives) will invariably need adjustments to levels, contrast, sharpness, perhaps removing a colour cast and more personal stylistic touches that make an image 'finished', it isn't to compensate for some lacking aspect of the composition or anything, in fact I'm a firm advocate that photoshop should be used to make good images fantastic not save crappy ones.

    7. I edit my photos pretty often on photoshop. :)
      It's a lot of fun.

    9. ive learned that if you dont have a fancy camera it helps alot to edit the photo! i :aheartbea Photoshop!!! = D

    10. I just do basic global adjustments. Fix white balance, increase saturation, auto-tweak tone curve (I'm so lazy I let the software do it), and sharpen. Nothing with layers or 'shopping things in or out.

If I want B&W or sepia or some other common special effect, I'll just have the software use its built in plugin to do it for me.

I'm the type that would outsource to a dedicated retoucher. If only I had one.

Oh dear, I did so many things to this. Duplicated layers, overlayed them, erased bits of certain layers, then added layers with colour, adjusted sliders... maybe I did a bit too much on this, I dunno. But I think the effect looks quite cool. ^_^

PS. This was taken with a crappy camera. ^_^

    14. I don't do all that much to my photos, but what I do is usually pretty standard. I sharpen the image, and then play with the contrast to bring out a certain 'glow' that I like. The levels are different for every photo.

      Before;

      And after;

    15. [IMG][IMG]

I don't really do anything snazzy, I'm not a big fan of dramatic photography.
For this I balanced the color, color adjusted, used color adjust curves, added brightness and sharpened.

    16. I'm not the best photographer but I'm a confident photoshop user so I use photoshop for a lot of my pics. There are one or two that turn out really well and I just need to resize but not often the case.
I know a lot of people dont like extensive editing but I like my pics to look their best. I dont have a problem with edits unless it's perhaps totally changing the way the doll looks like making a Ducan look like a Shall XD
(off topic doll but shows how I edit)

(I also fix a hair line here XD)

If anyone wants to know how I did a particular thing I'll gladly make a tut! I'm in no way professional or 'good' at editing photos but I can try to help! XD

    17. Here's an edit I just did.

      Before --
      [IMG]

      After --
      [IMG]

Resize, gradient maps, curves, sharpen, added fonts + borders.

    18. Top one is before, bottom is after.

I really wanted her in front of a gloomy background, so I made it happen! Also all of her colors on her face-up were really washed out, so I pumped those back up to their normal "irl" colors.

    19. I love to edit my pictures! I think it brings more life to them! <3
And it can also bring a more definite mood to it as well.
Not to mention, it is also very fun messing with colors and contrast and what have you. XD
So, here are some of mine. o 3o

    20. I edit the pic when I need something truly different and impossible to do with a camera..
You can see a complete changement
      BEFORE
      [IMG]
      AFTER
      [IMG]

      I've done this with Picnic.

    21. I suck period. To be honest Camera work is not my strength. I prefer the stuff behind the camera. Occasionally, I get something new etc and I want to show someone the new item which means exposing the world to my crappy camera skills, as such Photoshop is needed.

      The junk before:

      The slightly more presentable version:

Thankfully my photoshop skills are slightly better than my camera skills *_*

    22. [IMG]

      I use to photoshop (to the extreme) all my photos, but now-a-days, I'm getting lazy ^^;

    23. okay
normaly i don't edit photos on my pc, because it's too slow for the most things @@ also photoshop isn't working anymore because of this reason...so i had to use gimp....and gimp is shit....compared to photoshop. -.-"

also the pics are only taken with my cellphon camera, because my digital camera is sh*t - real sh*t!
so the before the pic had only 72dpi the after editing one has 300dpi ^-^ (and is smaler)

    24. I love seeing everyone's phtoos before and after... This is so great!

Here's an example of a type of edit I like to do with my photos:

    25. [IMG]
I always edit my photos. Most heavily of Zenith. He's very yellow in tone and doesn't quite match his body. He's also supposed to appear icy and wintery so he gets a lot of adjustments. Always desaturating his photos.

    26. Before
      [IMG]

      After
      [IMG]

I prefer taking photos with "faithful" picture style so my original photos look dull and need photoshop to look more finish.

    27. Ugly coloured shot with squint eye;

      Fixed as much as possible;

    28. Ah, i usually just fix the colors on the picture. Sometimes when i have time i will make it look crazy. But i like it simple (:

      [IMG] [IMG]

      [IMG] [IMG]

    29. The power of Photoshop! :DDD

(I don't usually do that stuff, it was just an experiment ^_-)

    30. FlamingStar129, wow! Could you possibly tell us how you achieve your editing style? :3 I find the change in the first picture (backgroud especially) amazing.

Jigarkhvar, your edited picture looks great!

I usually just do the normal editing- changing saturation/brightness/contrast/levels and sharpening/noise reduction, though editing things more thoroughly with layers is fun, too! ^.^ I loved Photoshop when I was doing my A Level in Photography, but at home I use Paint.NET, which has pretty much all you need. My laptop is dead at the moment, though, so I'm currently using Aviary.

Sorry if the below images are a bit large; again, my editing powers are limited at present. -_-

Here is a recent example with an altered hue, and the right eye edited to appear lighter after the colour editing. It took me forever to figure out an Aviary. >< Antanas seems to make me more inclined to alter the hue of his images. XD

Original and two edits (done a while back on PDN).

    31. I got extremely bored earlier and went through some older photos.
This is a bit heavier editing than I like to do, but whatever XD sometimes I just like to have fun. (I was a photo manipulator before I was a photographer)

    32. ooOOOo fun thread is fun... hello everyone I know!! -waves at them- it was an surprising amount >.>'''

I try to not edit /to/ much on general photo's. Just adjust levels, and colours a bit since my point and shoot is a p.o.s. ^.^ As my teacher said "you can edit decent pictures to make them amazing, but you can't make a bad picture good by tossing crap on it" or something to those lines. ^.^ Half my pictures aren't worth the effort to fix. But the ones that are... still need to be prettied up... oh how i wish I had a better camera -sigh-

      [IMG] [IMG]

      just simple edits ^.^

    33. [IMG][IMG]
before on left, after on right. i darkened the background to hide the fact that the vertical lines are not aligned to the sides of the photo! Also added a texture for fun.

      [IMG][IMG]
before on left, after on right. this was just a simple brightness and contrast adjustment, cos i didn't like the auto contrast (which i usually use because i'm lazy :/)

    34. I loooove Photoshop. *o*

    35. I work a lot with photoshop, even with my doll photos. Here is one from me =)

    36. Some very quick editing on a horrible photo that's all yellow and a bit blurry. My room has off-white walls that give every photograph an awful yellow cast even in natural daylight. This is mostly playing with the colour balance and a little with the levels and sharpness.

      Before:

      After:

    37. I do edit my photos quite a bit to achieve the feel I'm going for. Looking at the before and after, I'm probably a bit heady-handed in photoshop, but meh, I don't really care.

    39. AHA... My photography is pretty crappy actually

but my editing isn't so bad 8D

    40. I agree with RedPrincess, I also don't edit too many of my photo's because I feel that if you shoot a good photo then no editing is required. Trust me I have seen some BAD editing jobs.

    41. A photo straight out of the camera is very much a digital equivalent of a negative (especially if you're shooting RAW), there's always something that it needs to 'finish' it, I don't mean things like sparkles and lens flares but simple things like level and curve tweaks or adjusting the colour to remove a cast that the auto wb missed. Yes you should try to get as much as you can spot on before you take the shot but just because some people take it too far doesn't mean that all editing is bad or unnecessary, it's just a part of a photographers work flow.

    42. Depends on what kind of look i want to achieve, i would do heavy editing or little tweaking.

      [IMG] [IMG]

    45. I try not to do too much with my pictures.. I mostly finding myself having to de-yellow a lot of my pictures, because of our crappy indoor lighting, but I'm not a big fan of a lot of Photoshop, I prefer natural images, though of course there are exceptions to the rule..

      [IMG] Just some color correction
[IMG] and all this one needed was some sharpening! I was so stoked <3

    46. [IMG]

Just another example of a shot I've edited~ Besides colour and contrast, I ended up having to do a bit of selective brightening on his face especially since the light was pretty horrible :<

    47. I use Adobe Lightroom ^.^

    49. I usually dont edit my pictures so heavily, but the lighting really sucks in my room.
And makes the doll looks yellower than he's meant to be :0
      [IMG]

    50. [IMG]
      *waves back to Alder* ^^
It persistently likes to be cloudy/rainy on the days I specifically choose for photoshoots. So often times I warm up my photos, but then desaturate them so they're not blaringly neon. I generally like duller, more muted colors. I think that this photo I left a bit brighter than I usually do though. ^^

    51. A new one *O*

      I use Adobe Lightroom ^^

    52. I almost always edit my photos, but they are usually just to edit lighting/color or to get the mood/tone right for the photo. I don't drastically change the photo as I "shoot it how I want it to appear". It usually takes hours of shooting to get one just right.. but, eh.. haha. Here are some examples of my photos. ( From most recent to oldest ).

      Using Photoshop 7!

      After:
Fixed the colors so the picture wasnt so yellow.

      And then one dramatic change.
The whole shoot was originally meant to be in black and white because the background we used was made up of a lot of different colored items. ( i.e. frabics, bracelets, dice, objects, etc ) and to keep the eyes from bouncing with so much random colors, the black and white was needed.. mainly all the was changed was the black and white and making it a little darker. Though it seems more dramatic. lols.
