Hello! Please excuse me if this question has been asked before / is a bit silly as I'm still not overly familiar with the concepts of scale for BJD and the like, I'm still green. . I like the E-line Crobi heads a lot, but I'm not personally a fan of the body. Would this type of head fit on something of a slightly larger scale like a tall YOSD (~30+ in) or even a shorter MSD? Are there different YOSD bodies with slightly less "babyish" proportions? I know the whole intention is that they're like that, but I'm just curious if there are other options. Thank you very much for your time!
I can’t speak for E-Line but I have put my Volks YoSD heads on 31-35cm bodies! Minoruworld/Bluefairy Juniors & Customhouse Little Juniors were an older school scale of about 35cm, kind of like middle siblings for their standard 1/4 dolls & 1/6 dolls. Probably the most recent doll in this scale was Unoa Chibi or even maybe the Fairyland Moeline (I believe they’re technically 38cm?). About five years or so ago it became much more common to see 31-32cm bodies (mostly female or ungendered), which were more petite or even waif-y looking - Luts has Honey Delf 31, the Bunnybunny dolls, etc. I think they could still work with standard YoSD 1/6 scale heads but they might look more bobble headed sometimes because the shoulders tend to be pretty narrow. Volks also did a special “YoMidi” line where the heads were designed to work on both YoSD 1/6 bodies and their MSD/Midi line bodies. I think they were slightly larger than YoSD heads but maybe pretty similar to their MSDs. I think as long as you have a 6/7 or 7/8 wig size on the 1/6 doll, you could have good luck hybriding larger to a 1/4 mini scale body - it all depends on face shape/wig really! eta: Also I’ve always wanted to do an E-Line Lance hybrid onto a more mini body so I have thought it could work! No evidence though.
Thank you so much for such a detailed reply! I looked up all of the bodies you mentioned and something like the Unoa Chibi and Honey Delf are exactly along the lines of what I was kind of thinking about. Would something like this kind of count as a "1/5th" sort of scale? I wouldn't mind the proportions being a little bobbleheaded as long as the head wasn't totally loose so this is perfect to know! I also wasn't aware that Volks heads could go on resin bodies(?) so that is also super exciting!
Yeah, I’ve seen the 35cm size referred to as 1/5 before! I really love the size overall, my YoSD Lillie on a Minoruworld 35cm body was my absolute favorite for quite awhile. Not great for hybriding (even smaller heads), but the Raccoondolls girls are about this size too (33cm). Their default head is 5-6” and they’re meant to work more in scale with the “fashion doll” style mature minis with smaller heads. Super fun to play with! There are no male bodies in this midsize yet from that maker, but I would love to see what Raccoondoll could do given their men dolls.
I'm glad that there seems to be so many options for proportions at this scale! I wasn't aware there'd be so much variance, coming from a type of OT figure where mainly something described as "1/6" for example is usually the same across the board body / height wise! I'm going to look more into what's out there and if I do end up attempting a e-line hybrid, I'll absolutely show you photos! Thank you so much again!
One more option I forgot - Dollmore Narsha is pretty solidly 35cm! BJD scales are all over the place if you go between companies but you can find some really cool options out there and end up with a totally unique one of a kind (ooak) doll. Good luck, and definitely share your results Happy searching & hybriding!
1/5 dolls have been popping up more and more - off the top of my head, Huajing, Dollzone and Coral Reef have bodies in this scale, DF-H sadly discontinued their line but second hand might be an option.
I might have to keep an eye out for the DF-H 1/5th secondhand, that body also looks really nice! Thank you so much for letting me know what else is out there as well!
Although long out of production, the Lati Green line was a similar in-between size, made to look in scale with their Blue line that was a standard slim mini. Iplehouse KID is another one, made to look good with their JID line, although I think their neck is quite wide for it's size, so hybriding may be tricky. I second Dollmore Narsha. I have one as a younger sibling for a Lati Blue/Kid Delf hybrid and the scale looks good, for reference. She is single jointed, so there are some limitations in posing, but what joints she has are well balanced and what she can do, she can do reliably. If you want more mature, but in a similar size, the Dollpamm Loli body could be a candidate. It's proportioned like a slim mini, but at a smaller scale.
Thank you for the testimonial of the Narsha body, it's great to hear from someone who's tried out the fit! I don't mind scouring secondhand for retired / older sculpts, the Lati Green body also looks super nice for what kind of look I was thinking of for a taller YOSD. TYSM again for the insight! Unrelated, but the dolls you make are super cool, I adore Knobbly and Viggo's sculpts!
I'm an old (ancient, by hobby standards ) Lati fan, my first BJD and the one that got me into the hobby in the first place was a Lati Blue Shaina and she is still my absolute favorite. My second was a Lati Cara that I put on aforementioned KDF body and I always considered getting a Green as her younger sibling, but they stopped making them before I could get one. Instead I fell in love with a Narsha that I found second hand, but I'm not sorry. I love that Narsha! If you want pictures of them together or of some head swapping, let me know. I don't own any YoSD so I realize it may not be super useful, but if I can help for reference purposes, just let me know. Oh, thank you so much for saying that about the dolls I make! You just made my day!
Wow, Shaina looks absolutely adorable, I can see how you got so enamored to her! I can totally get plans changing due to stuff becoming unavailable, I'm sure your Narsha is appreciative for that too, ahaha. I would love a general body comparison, actually, if that's okay, I'd love to see the height variances in general as well as what your dolly friends look like, I'm sure they're sick!
Alright, here we go. Left to right is: Lati Blue Cara on Luts Kid Delf Romance body. Dollmore Narsha. Lati Blue Shaina. Iplehouse JID Tania. They all stand and equal distance from the background and the camera was placed to point straight forward at about mid upper arm height on the Shaina, so there shouldn't be any significant distortion to height or proportion. But I'm afraid the picture is of very little use for color, because the lighting isn't great and all of the dolls pictured are rather old and have changed color, varying from a slight shift to rather extreme. Hope it helps in some way and best of luck finding the right body!
I've been looking for a body for a little young lady, myself. Going towards 1/5th (I consider taller than 27cm 1/5; some companies may say 31cm is 1/6). In my search, most 1/5 bodies are closer to having 5.0cm necks, versus 1/6 where you will see a lot of 5.0cm or 5.5cm necks. I think Guard Love 1/5 and 1/6 are 5.3cm or 5.8cm necks. You can get a 5.5cm neck on a Doll Chateau 1/4, as long as you don't mind that style. Sorry for not really making suggestions, I only took a glance and didn't see a neck size for Crobi E-line. Spoiler: I'm not sure what I want to start with, but I've found a few different body types during my search. I joke to myself that I may end up with 7 bodies for one head. I've seen the following: standard size child bodies, long legged child bodies, chubby baby-style bodies (fat hands, heavier thighs, possibly bigger feet), pre-K child, late childhood bodies, and various bodies of puberty development (usually just heavier legs). One of the styles I never considered before searching was doing a chibi-like style doll, heavy legs / flat bust / bigger head or facial features / styled like a woman. Kind of like Xaga's Heart Knees 1/6 dolls. I'm not sure if I'll ever find a good number of the smaller 1/4 dolls, without going directly to manufacturer websites or asking around.
I don't mind the resin all being different colors, this is actually perfect to see how different the scales and proportions can vary for both the bodies and how their heads look on them, thank you so much for the stellar shot! It's fantastic for comparison. I'm uncertain of the neck size / head hole proportion, but thank you for bringing that up as I didn't take that into mind at all, I figured that I could use a smaller s-hook and hollow the channel out if things didn't quite fit for a body I ended up really liking. I wish you luck on your hunt as well, from what I can tell it seems a little tricky to find something that's right in that middle line. Something more chibi-ish sounds nice though, I think it could totally work too, depending on what kind of vision you have your girl to be like. I feel like I might end up with random doll bodies too because there's just so much out there that looks about right, ahaha. Happy holidays as well to you two, thank you so kindly again!
