A couple of weeks ago, I purchased a couple of wigs that I thought were going to be pure white. Imagine my surprise when they arrived, and while they were indeed white, they had very obvious and bright yellow undertones! I wish I'd taken pictures of them when they arrived, but I didn't think to. This is what the listing pictures looked like for one of them.. After asking around and consulting with my wife (who is a dye fiend and knows a lot about color theory), I decided to try and give the wigs a synthetic dye bath. I got a small bucket, emptied out one whole large bottle of 70% rubbing alcohol, and two capfuls of Royal Purple Rit synthetic dye. I kept them in the bath for only one minute-- I was too scared to let them soak, lest they turned purple! And this is how they came out while wet... And what the main one I'll be using looks like all dried! Color theory wins!
Man I wish color theory made sense to me it would be sooooo useful in so many aspexts of my lufe. But my brain will nwver be ablw to wrap iyself around adding purple to yellow to make white. Or adsing red to green to make a better green. I get the concept but actually doing it is another rhing altogether. Congrats on the better looking wig! Looks great now!
Oh, that's terrific! I've been figuring out color theory bit by bit as I work on my assortment of dollies. It's so gratifying to put to use and see how effective it really is! I'd love to have seen some before photos - alas! I never remember to take before pics either - but your quick and careful purple treatment looks like it worked absolutely beautifully! Bravo!
Those look great! Did the dye stick well with just the alcohol bath? I believe Rit for synthetics is made to work with heat/boiling so I'm curious if the alternative method stays on without bleeding after (would be really convenient though, boiling is such a mess usually )
Nicely done! @cobaltconduct I can vouch for alcohol sticking color to wigs permanently in my own experience. But I did it a bit differently. (I would use it with acrylic paint or liquid acrylic ink) It's still felt like a chaotic thing to attempt for me but it can make nice results if it works out. There are different factors like the specific wig fibers too.
