Dyeing Dyeing to counteract yellowing

Mar 21, 2024

    1. Hey guys,

      A couple of years ago I bought a Butterflies and Things Nicolette to fit a specific character. Butterflies and Things did, and still does I think, use Mirodoll to cast the dolls. Unfortunately, I made a big mistake when I ordered her. I own a lot of Volks, and it made sense to order a skintone that would match Volks, so I chose 'normal yellow.' I didn't take the time to look at their color swatches, or I would have realized that was intended to match 'old Volks' and was bright, butter yellow.

      When I received her, I quickly realized there was nothing I could do about it. The mistake was all mine. I put her aside and haven't done much with her since then.

      This is her beside recent Volks NS and Volks WS.

      I would like to make her a more pinky tone. I gathered by reading that I should be able to do that with a light purple dye bath? Maybe with some pink added? Does that sound right?

    2. I think the de-zombification serum might work for this - tutorial here.

    3. Oooh! Thank you for the link, I think that might work indeed. I was thinking I needed the Rit Dye More stuff, but sounds like this uses just the standard formula.

    4. Yeah you definitely want a diluted dye bath that is not very potent! I think RIT DyeMore is for more intense dye jobs (like dark or fantasy colors).

    5. I've done this many times. Regular Rit works, but is weaker, you need more. Rit Dyemore works better imo but keep an eye on it and don't use loads.

    6. There's a good Lomi's Playground video about this, and she shares her dye mixture ratio. You can watch it here.

    7. Use the head cap to test your dye, to make sure it's going where you want.
      And once she is dyed, let her sit about for a bit before getting the faceup done. In case you find you'd like to give her a second dunking. That's my advice after thinking I'd added plenty of color to a custom house tiny...I've been wishing ever since that I hadn't been in such a hurry & had dyed her longer but at the time I was afraid I'd get the color too intense. And now I'd have to wipe the faceup & restudy the process to dye her again. ;}
