Hello! I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but I wanted to ask anyways - does anyone know of any resources/patterns for making dresses for male doll bodies? No preference for specific doll sizes - I collect a variety of sizes. Alternatives are more than welcome - I'm rather rusty on sewing, so if there's an easy way to modify female dress patterns to fit a male doll, please tell me! As always, please link to previous threads if it turns out I missed this already being asked!
I have a little bit of experience sewing dresses for male dolls. I don't know of any specific pre-made patterns as I drafted my own however what I would suggest when starting out is looking to see if there are any measure and sew-type patterns that can be adjusted easily to your dolls measurements Lomi's Playground on Youtube has a few of these but there's also a few from 5th Atelier on tumblr tutorial. I hope these were helpful EDIT to add: there are also a couple of measure-and-sew type patterns on the BJDcollectasy site and you could also look up human size ones and just scale them down to BJD size… it may be worth making a mockup/toile just to check the fit if you go down that route
It depends on the size, really. SD13 girls are a similar size to my Delf boys, so I have some old Gracefaerie patterns I adapted for them. My Peakswoods boys are skinny enough to wear SD16 clothes, so you could look for patterns in that size. Idk what you’d do for bigger boys beyond drafting your own patterns.
If you're adapting patterns then start with leaving out the bust darts on the bodice (or greatly reducing them) whihc should both allow for the fltter chest of a male body and the thicker waist. If the skirt is fitted to the waist rathe than gahered or ppleated you'll need to either give the darts a similar treatment or add a similar amount of fabric in to the top of the seams to allow for the bigger waist size. Volks MSD girls bodies don't really have a bust so patterns for them would be reasonably close to fitting MSD boys (and presumably other boys of similar size). DollsTown 5Year bodies are flat chested too so patterns intended for them should fit similar sized (MSD range) male bodies Patterns for dresses that are gathered or pleated onto a yoke would also be a good place to start as they shouldn't need adjustment to fit a flat-chested/male body, and if you want a defined waist you can easily add a belt or sash. This one shoudl work for any size of doll. for SD10 sized boys I'd imagine dresses for SD10 girls would be a reasonable fit. If you like, when I get home form work, I'll try a coupld of dresses I've made for my SD10 girls on one of my SD10 boys and share pictures....? If they work on Volks boys, they should work fairlly well on other boys of similar measurements. For YoSD and Littlefee sized dolls the patterns are interchangeable becuas ethe boy ad grl bodies are pretty much the same proportions. I made dresses for other people's girls when I only had a boy in my collection to do the fitting on. Also, if you have a pattern for a shirt or other top that fits your boy, you can pretty much use it as a bodice pattern for a dress that wil fit him gahter a skirt onto the waist, add in the style of sleves you want (borrow them from a pattern for a girl of similar size) and miux and match the pieces as needed. In addition to what Teddy said, any peasant blouse/chemise/nightgown/"Mother Hubbard" style dress will fit a boy as well as a girl. Just check through the pattern links on the sticky at the top of this section to find things like that.
@Teddy Thank you so much for the detailed post! I'll definitely keep the darts in mind when sewing, I had no idea it would be that simple to alter a pattern! Thank you, I'll keep this in mind as well!
I know it's been a little bit since this was posted, but I really like Missy's Imaginings! She has a blog and a youtube channel and she is a seriously talented seamstress and has tons of patterns for free on her website for a variety of sizes and both boy and girl styles. There aren't any dress patterns specifically for boys, but she has a good tutorial on how to do the tape method for making basic patterns on your dolls. The video shows a girl doll, but it's the same idea for a boy doll. She also has lots of videos showing how to draft patterns, too!
Thank you for the recommendation, I'll be sure to check her out! I'm a newbie with sewing so that sounds like something I could definitely use!
