Hello, I’m starting out on making my bjd but I’ve worked in a hardware store for a while and thought I would share some tips on using a dremel tool. You aren’t going to need a large dremel or one with many accessories to start, which you can purchase as needed. I would definitely recommend the Dremel Stylo + as it’s perfect for crafting, and doesn’t have too much of a learning curve for the tools. It’s in the $50 range, pretty sweet price if I say so myself. The Dremel is pretty self explanatory as long as you read the instructions. Make sure you always wear a mask and goggles, you want to be careful when working with any kind of power tool. To get really smooth surfaces use the polishing tool that works for the material you are working with. I would 100% recommend buying a dremel, it may seem intimidating but it is extremely user friendly! Anyway that’s all I wanted to share. If you use a dremel tool share what you use and any tips you may also have!
Ooh, never thought about using the polishing attachment... something I will def need to try... what have you used it on... air dry clay, appoxie sculpt, sculpey, resin, etc?
Yes it is okay for both, just use a small bit of polish compound and you’re all good to go! The compound will leave a colored residue behind so keep polishing until it’s gone.
Nice BTW this polishing, does it act like burnishing, ie compressing the surface into a smooth finish?
It’s pretty similar, you’ll end up with a pretty clean finish but there may be more lines with a polish, depending on how well you polish. I’d recommend sanding as fine as possible and then polishing to get a really smooth finish.
Thanks again haven't used my dremel (aka a cheap dremel-like version) in a long, long time. And only used a couple of bits to drill an extra eye; feel like I should take time to research the other bits I have to see what they can do...
Of course! There are so many things you can do with a dremel so definitely take some time to experiment
