I've got something I'm trying to figure out. I've got a DV Chaos at home, and I've been waffling on whether or not I should switch out his head for DV Vine. I would, ideally, be switching out the head cap for Chaos' (as it has the magnets for his ears) and I realized something yesterday while changing eyes on Chaos. Chaos has 3 magnets connecting his headcap to his head. Is this normal for DV (specifically: if I buy a DV Vine, will my Chaos headcap be compatible)? I don't have any standard DV heads at home to check myself, but my other human-headed dolls have 2. I don't know if this extra magnet was added because of the ears, to make his head more secure. Can anyone give me some pics of the inside of their DV heads (bonus points if it's Vine himself xD), or at least tell me how many magnets they got going on in there, and their placement? Thank you in advance! :3
I have Elvish and he has three magnets, too. According to acbjd, Vine's head is 17.5 cm. And according to BJDivas Chaos' head is 17.4 cm. So, either BJDivas measured differently or there is a 1 mm difference.
Oh fabulous! Very grateful for the pic! I'm at work so I can't confirm, but I'm pretty sure that's the same position that Chaos' magnets are in. And thanks so much for looking at the sizes, I didn't even think to check that xDD I'm thinking that shouldn't be enough of a difference to make them incompatible, especially with the wiggle room built in around the magnet holes 8D Thank you!! So it looks like it's probably universal for their heads! I'll probably end up pulling the trigger on Vine sometime soon, I've loved him too long to resist and this just piles on to the "you know you should"....
Hello, I have a Vine head and it has the three magnet configuration. It looks to be the opposite to Colocat's Evlish head as Vine has two at the top and one at the bottom? Link to photo My other concern with switching head caps is that DV is a bit inconsistent with it's head sizes/ shapes so may not be a perfect fit. I tried switching with my DV Achelous head...and that head has two magnets in the standard one top, one bottom configuration so wasn't interchangeable! Maybe someone has both a Vine and Chaos they can check with? However when it come to using ears on heads without embedded ear magnets, I've found taping a pair of magnets to the head and then covering with the wig has usually been secure enough to do the job. I know Chaos' ears are large but they seem to mostly be above the head so there's no big sideways pull. You can make the magnets more secure with a silicone head cap over the top too. You have the slight hassle of buying magnets but it's not too bad using the tape on method, especially if you have a guide with Chaos' head on where to place them
My Dream Valley Vanora only has 2 magnets keeping her headcap on. She's a different scale i think than your boys though, so maybe that affects it.
OOooOOOO you have a Vine! Thank you so much for checking!! And it is horrible news lol. I checked Chaos' head when I got home, and he has the pair of magnets...on the bottom of his head, like Elvish above. So switching the headcaps would not work. I have heard of putting the magnets on the inside of the wig itself and attaching them that way, but his ears are very heavy so was hoping this switching method would work out. Alas, it was not fated. But if attaching them on the top of the headcap could still work, I might just go "why not" and buy the head anyway. They are basically on top of his head, as you said, so there wouldn't be much of a sideways pull, no. And I love your idea of getting him a silicon head cap to secure them extra good. If it doesn't work out, I still want Vine and can still use him for a project in the future (and I would wanna grab him before DV decides to discontinue him like so many of their others). And I think I have magnets laying around leftover from a non-dolly project I can use, so I could avoid the hassle of grabbing some xD Ohhhh, thank you for this info!! It looks like DV likes to switch up the magnet location depending on the head, so while this won't necessarily help me (I have no idea if scale is a determining factor or no, it sounds possible!) hopefully it can help someone in the future!
I never knew there were so many different magnet configurations. Why did DV have to utilize all of them?? xD
Darn! That's a shame the magnet positions are different (why DV?). I've not heard of sticking magnets to the inside of the wig. I would also assume this wouldn't be very stable. But I've had good results with magnets on head so might be worth trying if you have some spare magnets and another head you can practice on. But speaking of wigs and Vine's head, it's reminded me of an issue with DV's earlier heads (including Vine). They were kinda lazy with the ear sculpting and instead of shaping the back of the ears, they just left the chunk of resin in there. The issue is that prevented standard wigs from being put on the head as the ear bulk would just ping them off. It's been on my 'to do' list to demel/ sand out the excess resin behind the ears so wig fitting isn't a faff. So just to let you know you might need to do a bit of modding or make a custom wig if you do go with a Vine head!
I do have several more heads in my BJD collection at this point, time to choose a victim xD At least Chaos' ears are pretty for them to try on lol Ohhh, that is strange but also kinda makes sense if they were trying to make the molds a bit easier to deal with (if it wasn't just pure laziness lol). Thank you for the heads up, that would definitely be something I'd have to deal with after bringing a Vine home! I have a few other modding projects in the queue, so hopefully when I get to something as intimidating as the head I'll have more confidence in getting it done lol.
